I was reading a story about former Idols and their CD sales. Ruben Studdard debuted at #8 on the Billboard charts this week, but only sold 71,000 copies. As
USA Today reports, it's not a completely horrible number given the depressed state of the market, but it was significantly under expectations. By contrast, Clay Aiken debuted at #2 a few weeks back with sales of 211,000 his first week. USA Today projects Ruben to have difficulty even reaching 250,000 in total sales for the CD during its run. Ouch.
As for other former Idols, the most embarrassing result is from Ayla Brown, whose new CD sold a mind-numbing 300 copies in its first week. Hottie Mario Vazquez should've never quit the show... as his new CD sold just over 4,000 copies last week and has sold a total of 27,000. However, Mario did reach a milestone that only Kelly Clarkson among former Idols had reached. His song "Gallery" made the Top 10 in radio airplay. Kelly had reached the Top 10 in radio airplay with seven different songs, but she was the only former Idol to achieve that until Mario.
Some upcoming releases by former Idols:
