NY Times has a story about the 6'4 scruffy guy hanging with Mike Piazza these days. Piazza refers to the guy as his 'yogi' teaching him yoga, cooking him dinner every evening right after his massage. Yes, right after his massage. If Piazza wanted to put those gay rumors to rest, this was not the way to do that.

I read that article in the Times this morning and immediately thought "uh oh, here we go again" with the Piazza-is-gay rumors. Mike doesn't help himself by spewing lines like "I'm very spiritual about things and I believe people come into my life for the right reasons." He's either New Age or a Big Old Nancy Girl, and to lots of folks there's no difference between the two.

And apparently alot of those "folks" are gay men.
Its the gay men pointing the finger at him saying...."Queer".
Hell, if someone accuses me of being straight, I am sure as hell gonna set them straight (pardon the pun). I'd call a press conference too and let it be known....."I am NOT straight".
I don't understand why so many gay men get their panties in a wad when a straight man denys he's gay.
Straight male celebrities/athletes that make attempts to embrace the gay community are automatically deemed queer by the same people who want the respect of the straight man. It drives me up the fu*king wall.
Kinda reminds me of high school but the roles have switched, now its the queers calling the jocks gay but still dying for their attention.

NJ, re: straight male celebrities embracing gay men (no pun intended), there are lots of straight males who are supportive of gays and do not get labelled gay, I think of actors who play gay roles (Banderas, Hanks, McCormack, Leguzamo, etc). With athletes I have a little more difficulty thinking of names, but surely they exist in all sports, if not only in typical gay sports.
Some athletes and stars though just get the gaydar burning, like Piazza and Garcia and Glanville and Anderson and even Tom Brady. Something's gotta be going on somewhere here.
The NY Times article was just short of insinuation and mockery I thought. I forgot to note who wrote it.

Yep, I think thats wishful thinking on alot of gay mens part. wink
Some of my buddies still insist that Steve Young and Troy are gay....and their wives and children are just ploys....I mean, what do these guys have to do to appease gay men, screw 50 women in front of 'em while farting and drinking beer at the same time? Its stupid.
I think we would probably all be really surprised at who is and who isn't gay in this world. I just get a bit uptight about it. I hear this constant batter by gay men about their "sexuality" not being how they view themselves as men...or how I choose to remain closeted because "straight men don't have to announce their straight"......yet at the same time these are the same group of men that are constanting insinuating that others are gay....
So what if they are? Doesn't mean your gonna get to bed em!
I'm not one that holds alot of respect for closeted men, whether their famous or not....but I wish there was some balance here when it comes to the topic of gay athletes...you got guys like Jeff Garcia teased by GAY MEN for being some what effiminate.....guys like Piazza are ripped to shreads by GAY MEN for addressing rumour and innuendo in (I thought) a professional manner. Just because GAY MEN didn't hear what they wanted to hear....it makes these guys fair game? And you want their respect???
A straight man can't apparently have a close male friend or running buddy without there being some sort of sexual relationship between the two. Thats the difference between straight men and gay men guys.....we sleep with our pals....they don't.....but they can still have em.

Nathan, I see your point, but I'm not taking the posts nearly as seriously as you. I have straight male friends, but they don't massage me or cook dinner for me. I occasionally get a massage, but the masseur doesn't live in my house! I think we can all agree that this is an unusual situation, regardless of any sexual overtones it may (or may not) have.
But if it helps Mike hit and/or play first base, he can suck down cayenne pepper and flaxseed oil all day!

You know, with all the gay marriage hype lately, I wouldn't be surprised to see a sports star come out of the closet to get married.

You know, I just read the article and I didn't feel like the Times were insinuating anything. I think people are just reading too much into a typical NYT article about new age and stars. Piazza is a celebrity who lives in LA, why wouldn't he have his own yogi? And the article says the guy is moving out of Piazza's apartment after spring training. There wasn't any quote from Piazza saying he'll be really torn? Again, another example of people projecting their feelings onto a good-looking guy. (By the way, he is definitely better looking slimmed down with groomed facial hair.)

A friend of mine says he has heard that Colby from Survivor is frequently seen at the gay clubs in Dallas. Since one of the contestants from the Africa series was actually a bartender at Throckmorton though, I'm not sure if it is true.

Hey Nathan your strong opinions are welcomed just as everyone elses on this board. The whole gay speculation of athletes is really just like any other topic of controversy, it makes for lively discussion.
I don't think anyone here is out to get the athletes, but just to discuss the possibilities of their sexuality because it stirs interest. You may be right, when one does finally come out it might surprise everyone.

I wonder if this has any correlation to the very good friendship that Colby and Jeff Probst struck up after that particular version of Survivor ended.

NJ, "you're not the only one with mixed emotions/You're not the only ship... adrift on this ocean." Oops, sorry. wink
I also have strong feelings about the subject and I agree with you for the most part. I just haven't seen this thread today until just now.

In an article in today's New York Newsday, it says Piazza's "yogi" is 6'6" and 150 lbs. This guy sounds like a tall pencil-thin stilt. I don't think even the gayest athlete on earth would have any interest in a guy with that kind of build. LOL. I say Mikey is still in the clear.

The reason certain athletes "ping" for some gay mane is because we've seen the bevhavior in ourselves and others 100 times while trying to stay in the closet. "I'm not gay but if I were I'd come out" I don't know he just seems gay to me. There's really no way to explain it. Sort of like when the judge said he can't define obscenity but he knows it when he sees it.

Leave it to the Daily News today to be a tad more snarky than the Times about the Piazza Yogi Dude.

Lots of pro athletes have guys like this. It's just odd to hear of one that is so new agey spoken about so openly. Kudos to Mike.
