AUSTIN, Texas -- New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees has asked his mother to stop using his picture in TV commercials touting her candidacy for a Texas appeals court.

"I think the major point here is that my mother is using me in a campaign, and I've made it known many times I don't want to be involved."
-- Saints QB Drew Brees

In commercials running on Austin stations, Mina Brees had been using a picture of her son in the uniform of his former team, the San Diego Chargers, to emphasize her ties to football.

"I think the major point here is that my mother is using me in a campaign, and I've made it known many times I don't want to be involved," Drew Brees said Monday.

Mina Brees, an Austin attorney, is running as a Democrat for a spot on Texas' 3rd Court of Appeals. She said replacement commercials that omit any mention of her son were taped last week and sent to stations on Friday.

She said she did not anticipate upsetting her son and that "everything in the ad was true."

She said her connection to football is relevant to her campaign because her father, a successful high school coach, used sports to teach her a strong work ethic that she would bring to the judicial bench.

Drew Brees, who won a state football championship with Westlake High School in suburban Austin, said he got no response from his mother when he first heard about the ads and called her to ask that she stop using them. His agent sent her a letter Oct. 20 threatening legal action, he said.

He called his relationship with his mother "nonexistent" after it crumbled six years ago when he refused to hire her as his agent.

Mina Brees said her son's allegations were a mischaracterization and that she had no intention of becoming his agent.

"I love Drew very much, and I'm very proud of him. But sometimes when people are following a career path, they change," she said.

Mina Brees also said she did not receive any messages asking her to exclude her son from her campaign.

Jill Fredericks, sales director for KVUE Television, said the station received a new version of Mina Brees' commercial late Friday. The old version stopped running Sunday and the new one was scheduled to begin Tuesday, she said.

Mina Brees is challenging incumbent Republican Justice David Puryear in next week's election. The appeals court reviews civil and criminal cases from 24 counties in Central and West Texas.

Now this is an interesting turn of events there in Texas. How is it that Drew Brees can be such a great guy on the field yet such a bad guy with his own family? I chalk this up under "Things That Make Me Go Hmm...". huh.gif

Um, she's a lawyer AND a politician. Call me biased but I'm in Drew's corner until more news develops. tongue.gif

This is a very interesting story- admittedly and truly none of our business- but interesting nonetheless.

I am thinking Mama Brees wanted to ride her son's success and make a quick and easy buck...

Now it would be VERY interesting to see if the Republican candidate now runs ads using this against her- I deplore it but love it at the same time.

From another story:

Brees also told the American-Statesman that her commercials were sending a message of, "If you don't know much about the election, vote for me because I know Drew' . . . and that is a shame because the political process should be decided on your credentials."

Makes perfect sense to me. Not dysfuntional. Though common sense about politics is "dysfuntional", or at least odd, nowadays I suppose.

This is really, really sad. I almost can't understand how someone could dislike their own mother, but I've been blessed with cool parents. Maybe I feel extra sorry for him because I think Drew is really hot, but this really is a sad story. I hope he is able to someday resolve these issues between himself and his mother.

While I have been a fan of the Chargers (hence my user name) since I was a kid, having grown up in San Diego, I have been a fan of Drew Brees not only because and since he used to play for the Chargers but also, I readily admit, because he has the best ass in all of sports, in my opinion. That being said, since becoming a fan of Drew Brees (and his ass), I have also admired him because he seems to exhibit authentic sportsmanlike conduct and seems a genuinely decent, caring person, as evidenced by his charity work and his relationship with his wife, which seems one of true love and faithfulness, at least from the public face put to it. While I, of course, have no way of knowing whether the animosity towards his mother is warranted, I hope that his behavior in private does not belie his public persona. I have attended a couple of New Orleans Saints games since he became their quarterback, even though I've never been a fan of the Saints, simply because of him (and his ass) and have bought some Saints merchandise as a result. While I will always love his sexy ass, if I were to see that his public persona were a sham, I would certainly be unlikely to ever pay any attention, buy any merchandise or purchase tickets of any team on which he played. That may be an overreaction, but I think in these days of your Terrell Owens and other similar players, genuinely sportsmanlike and decent players are becoming more of an exception, even if they were never the rule.

All that being said, that bitch Mina Brees is still using a picture of Drew on her campaign site. Has she no shame? wink.gif

Then you haven't met my sister, who is 36 going on 16, is a single mother living at home with the folks, and her whole life has treated my mother like shit. "f**king bitch" and "cunnt" were but a few of the common names my sister used to call my mother, to her face.

My folks pay most of her bills, provide her a rent-free roof over her head, and she continues to take advantage of them, realizing that because she's got a 6-year-old daughter (my youngest niece), she's got them wrapped around her fat finger, knowing that they won't toss her and the kid out (my father's too much of a softie to do that).

We all have less than perfect families. But I think we need to know a lot more about Brees's situation before making too many assumptions. Perhaps this event will bring that out.

Texas politics are outsized just like everything else about the state. I intend to stay tuned to this one.

My 36-year-old sister still uses such vulgar words against my mother. It's bad enough when she did it as a teenager, but as a grown "adult"?
