Well, it's not really a surprise, but Neil Patrick Harris, the former child doc of "Doogie Howser, MD" has acknowledged his long-rumored fabulousness

Neil Patrick Harris is gay – and wants to quell recent reports that he had denied it. The actor tells PEOPLE exclusively:

"The public eye has always been kind to me, and until recently I have been able to live a pretty normal life. Now it seems there is speculation and interest in my private life and relationships.

"So, rather than ignore those who choose to publish their opinions without actually talking to me, I am happy to dispel any rumors or misconceptions and am quite proud to say that I am a very content gay man living my life to the fullest and feel most fortunate to be working with wonderful people in the business I love."

People Magazine on Neil Patrick Harris

Have we reached some sort of tipping point with actors actually admitting they're 'mos?

Wow...Dougie Houser. I thought it, didn't care, and now am like..."wow...Dougie Houser."

I've always loved Neil Patrick Harris and think he's grown into a very attractive man. Good to see child stars mature and do well. No doubt it has to do with the support system one has....

it's no longer the death knell for an actor's career as it once was

honestly, I thought he came out a long time ago

me bad

I think it's been a pretty open secret that Neil Patrick Harris is gay, but it's nice that he has officially come out. He seems like a cool guy and I love him on "How I Met Your Mother". He steals every scene he's in.
Munson Man
He's also grown into a very accomplished stage actor. I've seen him on Broadway twice now - the last time in Stephen Sondheim's Assassins - and he was quite good. He has an impressive singing voice.

What's with People? It's turning into "Yup, I'm gay" magazine. Lance Bass, T.R. Knight, Neil Patrick Harris... who'll be next?

Gay boys playing randy straight boys. Straight boys playing randy gay boys ("Queer As Folk").

I guess that's why they call it "acting."

Is there a celebrity gay clock, you know, like those celebrity death clocks where people can wager when someone famous will die?
ursaminorjim
Maybe coming out is the new "celebrities die in threes?"
Bryan
It's fantastic. The more, the better...Come on out!
Maddog
The next three will be....Mario Lopez, Vin Diesel and William Shatner. Good Luck all.

thanks a lot,Maddog! The first two got me really excited and then the last one killed it!!

I love when Neil parodied himself in "Harold and Kumar go to White Castle"... it was hilarious and that convinced me completely that he way gay and totally cool with it.

William Shatner- EWWWWWWWWWWW! Beam him f**king anywhere but here, Scotty...

Vin Diesel is so so sexy....he admits to loving show tunes smile.gif

Mario Lopez would not be a surprise at all to me... nor Mark Paul Gossealar

My dream is that these guys just keep feeling comfortable enough to come out... with our continued support.

I've had a crush on him ever since he started on "How I Met Your Mother" last fall! tongue.gif Has anyone noticed how he's been shirtless in a couple episodes recently? biggrin.gif

I've had quite the crush on Neil since he played Doogie Howser. I'm glad to see that crush wasn't lost entirely. biggrin.gif Be still my beating heart. wub.gif

As for him stating this in "People" magazine, this heartened me to read that he's not making such a fuss over it. He's merely stating it in a matter-of-fact manner. That warmed my heart immensely.

The next celeb to come out. Hmmm... Can I hope for Barry Watson of "7th Heaven" fame?

I think he came out because his publicist angered a lot of gay fans responding to an article on a Canadian website that outed him and his long-time partner, David Burkta, a broadway actor. The publicist supposedly refuted everything saying Neil is not of that "persuasion" and the tone set people off. I think he just wanted to say "It's true, I'm proud, done with it" (and maybe the publicist too).
Good for him--always liked him, but never had a clue he was gay though I guess he has been pretty open about it in New York with the Broadway crowd.

Thanks for pointing that out. My anniversary is coming up. Maybe I should bake a cake...

Mario Lopez and Vin Diesel would rock. Vin Diesel hasn't done anything in a while, and it really wouldn't hurt his career. Wait a minute...he is trying to be the next big Action Hero.

Apparently the same Canadian website that ultimately led NPH to come out is "calling out" Kevin Spacey, Richard Simmons (please, stay in Richard!), Clay Aiken, Sean Hayes and two guys I don't really know - Wentworth Miller (Prison Break?) and Matt Dallas (some young actor from ABC's Kyle XY). Personally, the big rumor is that the head of the Republican Party, Ken Mehlman, is quite the homo and if anyone should be outed, let it be him.
jaragonus
We don't need pathetic closet cases who have denied the truth for years like Spacey or Hayes to come out.
Bailey
I think it's great that more and more gay men are standing up and coming out. I worry that we're on a witch hunt, though. I think the more out actors there are, the better, but I hate to think People magazine has a weekly quota on its wall - who can we out this week?

(Not that I would protest one single bit if Topher Grace or Wentworth Miller came out.)
Illini_fan
Uh...Sean Hayes is in the closet? That's news to me.

Do we really need him to confirm? He was a theatre major at Illinois St., that fact alone makes it 90% likely he's gay.
kick
I think Richard Simmons is officially out like crazy.... I believe I read somewhere that when he told his father the response was pretty much "DUH".... So I am not quite sure where that came from LOL

Matt Dallas and Wentworth Miller are both HOT AS HELL!!
J eddie
I never heard of Matt Dallas so I looked him up on the internet. He IS very attractive.

Have you heard the latest? Apparently Reichen, that deep thinker dating Lance Bass, has coined a new term. Neil Patrick Harris was not "outed," by the gossip columns, he was "Lanced," because of the similarities to Lance Bass' outing by similar gossip columns. Of course, reporting on this sub-trend of outing has invariably added statements about how horrible it is to report on these celebrities before they are ready to come out.

But here's my issue. In both Lance Bass' case and Neil Patrick Harris' case (and to a lesser extent, the outing of TR Knight on Gray's Anatomy), the gossip columns were simply reporting on these men as if they were straight. Harris has been dating his Broadway-stud boyfriend for years, and it has been often reported on, typically with a formal "no comment," from Harris' people. In fact, the gay gossip columns did not really go after Harris until his publicist issued the flat denial - too many people knew that was a lie and called him on it. In Lance's case, he was seen in public, often, with an openly gay, not to mention single, minor celebrity. They went to gay bars together, for crying out loud! Had either Harris or Bass been seen with a woman under the same circumstances, I have no doubt that gossip columns would have reported the pair as an "item."

If it is really true that being gay is not shameful, why shouldn't the gay media and gay gossip columns, and for that matter the MSM, report on the same-sex couplings of celebrities just as they do opposite-sex couplings? If you are a gay celebrity trying not to be outed, don't go on obvious dates with someone of the same sex (in the case of Bass, one gossip site got pics of them wearing each other's shirts after what was apparently a night together). If you do roam with your homo homies in public, expect some talk, that's the way life goes. After all, there have been several snarky gossip posts about BFFs Lance Armstrong, Jake Gyllenhal and Matthew McC all hanging around together, with questions about whether they're gay. All three have denied it, but in funny ways (e.g., "we tried it, but didn't like it"). Should such reporting be off-limits just because someone might be gay? And doesn't that just exacerbate the idea that being gay is some horrible thing?
canmark
I totally agree. If it's OK to report on a male celebrity dating a woman, why is it wrong to report that they are dating a man? To me, that implies that there is something wrong with same-sex dating, which of course, there is not.

He was 'Lanced,' I say!

QUOTE
"It's to be outed by someone in the public media and to a celebrity, and Neil Patrick Harris, I understand, has been 'lanced,"' Lehmkuhl said in a recent interview. The term was coined, he said, after Bass revealed earlier this year that he is gay.

"They're calling it a 'lancing.' It's to be 'lanced,' " Lehmkuhl said of Harris, who said last week he is "a very content gay man living my life to the fullest."

Harris, who played the namesake doctor on the TV series "Doogie Howser, M.D." as a teen, made the disclosure almost two weeks after Canadian website Canada.com stated as fact that he had secured a role for his "longtime sweetheart" on his new TV show, "How I Met Your Mother."

The Canada.com item came a day after another entertainment blog, Perez Hilton, the self-proclaimed "Queen of All Media," alleged Harris was gay and pleaded with the 33-year-old actor to come out. The Hilton site frequently scrawls profane allegations about the sexuality of stars over their photos.
* * *
"People should be able to come out on their own," Lehmkuhl said. "I don't know so much that it helps gay equality if a celebrity is outed by someone else and it shows that they're forced out."

"It seems like it just continues the vilification of homosexuality in the media in this country," he said.

"It seems like it just continues the vilification of homosexuality in the media in this country," he said. What?! Would he prefer Don't ask, don't tell?

lanced?

oh lord
Eric Swanson
I'm glad that "Doogie Howser" and the others feel free to come out of the closet without fear. But I'll rejoice when a celebrity's homosexuality is no longer considered "news."
Bailey
Lanced? You have got to be kidding me. Like he's the first celebrity to ever be outed. Good lord Reichen's got a high opinion of himself and his boyfriend. Someone should inform him their fifteen minutes of fame expired at least a year ago, or at least at the moment Lance gave People magazine that interview where he coined the even better term "SAG" (as in "straigh-acting gay). Yeah, Lance is a veritable homo Rhodes Scholar, exactly the kind of open-minded, accepting gay man I want speaking for all of us and coining phrases to be added to Webster's dictionary.

I agree Bailey. For me, Lance's coming-out pronouncement and his implication that being gay is OK as long as you're "straight-acting" was more homophobic than if had just stayed in the closet to begin with.
