I don't mind saying that I think Chicago is the greatest city on earth. One way you can really get to know the Chicago area is by taking a tour with someone who really knows the city. Catch me anytime OTHER than during the Gay Games and maybe I might be willing to lead up a tour or two, but the real experts have just announced a series of amazing tours that I promise will make you come to realize how awesome this city really is.

View the official tours online. I think my favorites tours might be the one that explores ethnic neighborhoods (54 languages are spoken here!), an architectural boat tour (plus a visit to the Hancock Tower), or maybe one of the museum tours. Then again, the Greektown or Chinatown tours might be great, even though waistline expanding. But I'll bet it's the Friday night (21 July) baseball game between the World Series Champion Chicago White Sox and the Texas Rangers that will sell out first. Everyone loves a winner!

Get those tickets now!

I stumbled across this Chicago Gay Games blog. Looks like it's maintained by a Chicago athlete that has participated in past Gay Games. There's some very helpful information there too, for those not familiar with Chicago etc...

Bigots drive out Gay Games rowing venue.
Travelpat
I read this morning that the decision to block the Gay Games from using the rowing venue, which was somehow blocked in a tie vote 2-2 - which I don't really get, is going to be re-considered this Tuesday. Apparently the fifth board member who was away on vacation has insisted on a new vote with the new vote to include his. I would assume that he is only insisting on such a re-vote if it his intention to vote in favour of the Games using the venue, in which case it should pass 3-2. At least I hope that is the case.

Pat
KevinB
The 2-2 vote was on the proposal from us, vetted through Park District staff, to hold the rowing regatta at Crystal Lake. Because there was no majority, the motion was not approved. The Park District called us the next morning to let us know that they wanted to hold a special meeting to review the decision and allow the Board President to vote. They asked if we were still interested in holding the event in Crystal Lake. We said yes and the meeting will be Tuesday night, March 7.

In the meantime, there has been a huge outpouring of support - including letter after letter of support from Crystal Lake residents to their local paper, and to us. We'll notify Jim and Cyd of the results of the meeting so they can report on it.

One hurdle cleared...

Crystal Lake gives OK to Gay Games

March 8, 2006

BY LISA DONOVAN Staff Reporter

After four hours of heated exchanges about God, sex and the law; after the booing, the hissing and the clapping were over, the votes were in Tuesday night: The 2006 Gay Games are approved to hit the shores of Crystal Lake.

(snip)

Board member Jerry Sullivan, who had just returned from Mexico and cast the decisive vote, later said, \"I think it shows our openness as a community and our fairness.\"

Gay Games organizers still have to clear hurdles with city officials and other suburbs. Chicago is host city of the games.
Some fun people up in Crystal Lake:

QUOTE
\"I do not want these queers coming to my hometown,\" said Larry Reyer, 55, a mechanic and 29-year resident. \"Like I asked before, what revenue are you bringing in? What are you bringing in except stirring up all these problems?\"

A standing-room crowd packed the Woodstock Street park district facility in Crystal Lake. More than 80 residents, gay activists, ministers and legal experts took to the microphone to voice concerns about issues ranging from tolerance, the state's human rights act and fear the Gay Games will promote promiscuity.
Anyway, good job GG organizers! Still a very, very chilling incident.... Where are we, exactly? What year is this?
CHIathlete
I was in attendance at the Crystal Lake revote. I’ve never attended this type of open forum, it was quite interesting. SO many people chose to speak; I couldn’t begin to guess how many (over 3 hours worth!). We got there around 7pm, the meeting started just shortly after 7:30 and lasted past 11:30 – anybody who signed up to speak was allowed to do so. There were over 250 people there; including every type of local media person imaginable. It was standing room only and the police officers there began to deny entrance to late arrivers. The board members tried to limit the topic to just rowing and the event, but clearly most were interested in expressing their views on the gay issue. Fortunately the speakers were divided almost equally, opposed vs. against. I did my best to tune out the preacher freaks that talked about ‘sin’, and the mother of two that was VERY concerned for her two little boys and how damaging this would be to them <GEEZ>.
I was really impressed with some of the Crystal Lake residents that were supportive and wanted to speak out on the initial vote and the bad press that followed – in particular the very attractive, articulate Crystal Lake High School girl -she was such an amazing speaker for someone so young, and the very last speaker, a youngish African American woman, married to a man, Christian, family values, heterosexual, mother of two. She was very supportive, clearly wanted to expose her children to tolerance and diversity and also challenged those that had previously brought up the ‘family values’ crap.

I chatted with the pregnant woman next to me (her due date was in two weeks!). She lives right on the lake with her son and husband and was really worked up after reading the negative Crystal Lake articles from the first meeting. She couldn’t wait to speak and present to the board her reasons, as a mother and a resident, why they should vote ‘yes’. It was people like her that made this trip unique and very special to me

Okay Chicago types: does anybody have reasonable hotels to recommend?????

I did check something called Hotwire, which books hotels in an area, but they don't tell you which one until you've booked. There was one in the North Michigan Ave-Water Tower-Gold Coast area. Okay, but that sound like 3 areas, and you can't link to a decent map that gives you an idea....

Orbitz, the Gay Games supplier just makes my computer crash!!!!!!!!
gmginsfo
I've stayed at all of these three small, Euro-boutique style hotels in Lakeview/Boystown, but like The Willows best. VERY reasonably priced, clean, lots of cable channels, friendly staff, quiet, and close to the El, i.e., everything. Oh yeah, and all a short walk to Wrigley.

BTW, NoMi, Water Tower and Gold Coast are all basically in the same area, but "The Gold Coast" bar, like "Dugan's Bistro," alas, is no more. frown

Water Tower is on North Michigan Ave., Gold Coast is the neighborhood just to the west (and a bit north) of North Michigan. Gold Coast has gorgeous homes, but also some VERY straight late-night bars on Rush & Division. No gay nothin' around there. However, I did really like the Hotel Indigo when I took a tour last month. Boutique without the attitude of a W.

Allerton, Hotel 71, Allegro, Hilton Garden Inn, Monaco, lots of decent hotels in the Loop and River North areas. I'm probably not the best person to ask since I have only stayed in two hotels here. One of them was the Intercontintal, which I'm sure is pricy but has the coolest (indoor) pool in the city!

Good luck!
KevinB
Chuck - sorry that Orbitz made your computer crash, but the best values are through them right now. Try again! :-)

Orbitz is doing a March 2006 promotion that gives people $150 off per room for bookings of 7+ nights, or $75 off per room for bookings of 4-6 nights. Dozens of hotels in the Chicago area qualify.

They've actually got it set up pretty easy - go to Orbitz.com/gaytravel - select the "Save up to $150" under "Deals of the Week." Or, alternatively, go directly to the Orbitz Gay Games page at Orbitz Gay Games page.

You'll see a few options there - all varying by date - July 14-23, July 15-22, July 14-18 and July 19-23. You could also just do a normal search but watch for the "coupon" when you get to the page where you enter your credit card.

I just ran through the whole process myself, selecting the Ramada Inn on South Lake Shore drive for 9 nights at a price of $100 for two double beds. $900 for the room, $164.45 for taxes, minus $150 in coupon led to $914.45. That's $101.60 a night. Find a friend to share the room with and it's just a bit over $450 a person for 9 nights of lodging.

Travel Lodge - same deal, only starts at $115 a night. This hotel is right downtown (Ramada is close to Hyde Park - great if you're playing softball, football, swimming, martial arts, cycling, or golf). Howard Johnsons - same, $117 a night.

Thanks guys: I will check out the tips, and try orbitz again.

WARNING: GENERAL RANT COMING: Why the hell do sites upgrade to not support browsers more than two minutes old??? Yes, I know you can download new ones, but before doing that you need to purchase operating system upgrades. My computer is a G4, it's not like its a 286 or something. Geez.

Okay, now that I got that off my chest...

Kevin, the sharing with a friend would be ideal, but the only problem is finding someone who is coming to Chicago. Team Vanc sent something like 340 to Sydney, but so far I've only met a volleyball team who is coming to Chicago, and they've booked as a team. Not even Team Vancouver knows how many are going yet (are registration names and numbers something you share with city teams?) I'm sure registration will be at least respectable, even with the unfortunate complete balls-up culminating in 2003, but I likely won't find out who is there until Opening Ceremonies.

Being a single athlete instead of in a Team Sport has its drawbacks, as does being single. (Double the hotel cost and none of the side benefits.)

Also, going to two events (see "unfortunate balls-up comment" above) stretches the pocketbook, as well as, I admit it, ringing my bells.

Thanks for the encouragement guys. I appreciate it.
KevinB
There are lot of people registered from Vancouver - I think you need to talk to the Team Vancouver people again about that. Maybe someone will see your posting here and offer to share with you.

Just a quick reminder to everyone that Gay Games VII Opening and Closing Ceremony tickets go on sale starting tomorrow, Saturday, March 11, 2006 - at 10 am Central Time.

The tickets will be going on sale in waves. Wave #1 is "Premium Ticket Packages" - purchase a ticket to both the Opening Ceremony (Soldier Field, July 15) and Closing Ceremony (Wrigley Field, July 22) at the same time. These are available in three prices - Gold ($240), Silver ($225) and Bronze ($190). Keep in mind that the price is for one ticket to BOTH ceremonies. These packages are what will be available online at Tickets.GayGamesChicago.org starting Saturday at 10 am.

(The prices are without markup - The best seats for Closing Ceremony are $90 and the top 3 prices for seats at Opening are $100, $125 and $150. That's how these packages are developed.)

Tickets to the individual ceremonies will go on sale via partner and sponsor pre-sales starting March 22. The public on-sale date is March 25. The prices for Opening Ceremony will start at $50 and for Closing Ceremony will start at $50. Both stadiums have ticketing arrangements with separate companies so those who don't take advantage of the package sales will have to buy the ceremony tickets in 2 separate online transactions.

Registered participants do not need to purchase ceremony tickets for themselves as they will be seated in the best seats at both stadiums.

Tickets to many of our sports & cultural events are already on sale. Where we are selling tickets to those events the quantity is typically limited. Everyone wishing to attend those events will need to purchase a ticket (unless they are actually participating in the event being ticketed). The link for the sports & cultural event tickets is the same - Tickets.GayGamesChicago.org.

I hope this is helpful!

A revised schedule has been posted for the Gay Games VII Swimming competition. This schedule includes details on Synchronized Swimming as well as the Open Water Swim and reflects the change in swim venue to the new award-winning short course meter pool at the University of Chicago that is preferred by our partner, International Gay & Lesbian Aquatics.

Water Polo has, as a result, been moved to the University of Illinois/Chicago pool (the former location for the Swimming competition). Diving remains at Northwetsern. The aquatics schedulers are doing their best to schedule Swimming and Water Polo to allow for maximum cross-over for athletes interested in doing both. Both competitions are expected to be quite large so this remains a challenge - but our commitment is always to the experience of the athlete so we will continue to work on this.

Kevin Boyer
Gay Games VII
According to the email notice that was sent out, one of the reasons for the venue change was that UIC's shallow end was too shallow for swimming... so is it going to be deep enough for water polo???
KevinB
Good question, Mark. The pool is a 50 meter pool. It is 25 meters across in the deep end. The entire competition will be held in deep
water.

For those people looking to play a TEAM sport in the Gay Games (but do not have a team), the matchmaker system is a great tool. I've been able to pick up two softball players, one from Salt Lake City and one from Toronto.

All you have to do is click on the link for your sport, then find the 'matchmaker' icon from that page!

Okay did any one else read this article about Boycott Walgreen's the corporate sponsor of the "deadly" gay games?

Another person turning the games to being about sex and how that sex is deadly. Then going after Walgreens for violating their own policy and calling for a boycott.

Then he used an article from OutSports to justify the tactic.

Although some homosexual activists might attempt to claim \"victim status\" with regard to any boycott, they are no strangers to the tactic.

Chiathlete: I think I'm sorted for housing, but thanks for thinking of me. I've started the ball rolling now that the Herman Something University campus has opened up for singles. Tell your friend about that.

My second biggest problem re housing is not knowing the city. And the GG site is helpful, but, of course, only so much so. Maybe it's dumb to stay near your venue if you're only there 2 days. How far are things from each other (not much indication of distances on maps) Does anybody know of a street map with the transportation grip on it?

And just how bad a neighbourhood is this Herman ----- University campus? And how easy is it to get to the Hub/boystown and where we all want to be?

Again, Chi athlete, thanks for thinking of me.

It looks like Vanc has at least 50 people coming.

Cyd: try Hotwire. I found some places as cheaply/more cheap than the Orbitz official site

On the Gay Games Wbsite select Maps, The Hub, then select the map to enlarge (you will get what is linked here). See the square of rail tracks in the middle? That's the loop. The Herman Crown Center is very near the bottom right corner of that orange/purple/brown/green square (Wabash @ Congress). The train stops are also identified. You are staying close to a green line stop. The Green line takes you directly to the South Sports Village (also available on the website, select Maps, then South Sports Village, then select the map to enlarge - you'll see what is linked here). That's where Martial Arts is taking place.

The Herman Crown Center is featured on our website here and there is a link to a mapquest map there also. Both sets of maps have a scale offered to you can calculate distances.

You can use the various maps to figure out where you're going - down to the street detail. However, you can also use a commercial provider like mapquest to check distances if you prefer.

We also have a section on our Travel pages called \"Getting Around\" (linked here) which details things like the train, buses, etc.

And if you don't trust any of what we've got there already, try visiting TransitChicago.com - the Chicago Transit Authority's website. System-wide maps are there.

Chuck wrote:
QUOTE
\"And just how bad a neighbourhood is this Herman ----- University campus? And how easy is it to get to the Hub/boystown and where we all want to be? \"
See above for info on the Hub - the Crown Center is in the hub. The neighborhood is fine - like any large city, pay attention to what's going on around you at nighttime and if your instincts tell you to be more alert, then be more alert. Keep in mind that you're staying at student housing - lots of people live there year-round.

All you need to do to get to Boystown is to get on a red line train and take it north to Belmont. Boystown is featured on the Lakefront Sports Village map (linked here).

In Sum - select Maps, Chicago or Travel on our website and most of what you're looking for is probably there. It might not be organized exactly as you would organize it, but hopefully with a little bit of poking around you can find what you need. If not, email me at kevin.boyer@gaygameschicago.org and maybe it's something we can add.

One last thing - keep in mind that the city will be FILLED with Gay Games folks, and that there will be a great deal of information in your registration packet. It's fine to make your plans now and to work out transit routes on how to get from your lodging to the best bars and such, but you'll get a lot more assistance later as well.

I'm proud of myself today, because I've FINALLY nailed down housing (in residence at the Herman Crown Centre, and I must say, dealing with the lady there, Angela, was Great!) Of course, I have no idea the type of neighbourhood I'm in, but that's the nature of being a tourist.

On a sidebar, the housing thing was very stressfull. No matter how many internet sites who claimed to have rooms starting at $89, they ending up wasting my time only to announce average daily prices of $153 up to well, trillions. Why do they do that? Can't they just tell you what it costs and where it is without dicking you though ten screens? Also, the hotels on Orbitz (the official site) pretty much come up as booked. Yet, in every city there's plenty of hotels you just can't find online. I was half-seriously wondering if I'd finally just give up and walk away from my registration fee and plane ticket. I hope others are better at this than I am, and some rocks are turned over and more hotel rooms turn up.

In addition - this location is excellent - very near the lake and Millennium Park.

ChuckVanc wrote on April 6: "..housing situation stressful."

Any online experience at booking lodging can be stressful, even if there are plenty of rooms. I know that I always wonder "am I getting the best deal at the best location?"

However, the Orbitz experience is actually pretty good if you select the hotels that are in the Gay Games block or even the first hotels that show up. From the Gay Games VII web pages (also available as a link from www.Orbitz.com/gaytravel/ ) the very first set of info is "Gay Games Hotels." I clicked the link for July 14-23 and the first two links are two hotels at which Orbitz has Gay Games blocks (Ramada Inn South Lake Shore Drive and Travel Lodge downtown). I chose the "Select" link and was able to get all the way to the point where they were requesting my credit card. The room rate for the Ramada was $106 per night, plus tax, for two double beds - $115 for the Travel Lodge. Painless.

There are still hotels available for direct booking via the Gay Games Hotels webpage.

I do recommend that people make their bookings now, though. There will be hotels available if you wait, but you might have to stay in Oak Park (about 25 to 35 minutes via subway west of downtown), or out at O'Hare (about 35 to 40 minutes via subway northwest of downtown) in order to get a rate under $150. The longer you wait, the more expensive it will be and Chicago Games can only do so much for those who wait until May, June or July to book.

No, although they may be a separate campus ????

Roosevelt itself is only avail to groups of 10+ at this time. At the Herman Crown they have single residence room for $500 for the 9 days, or shared for $400, I believe. For me, when I have stayed in residence, I've found I've met people, which wasn't always the case for me in hotels and surprisingly, in B & B's. The other thing I found was, when not knowing a city, the neighbourhoods are just lines on a map (with which I was never any good.) So, I'm super happy the Herman Crown opened itself up to individuals.

For me, I still maintain that the Orbitz thing was annoying. Starting with the fact that it didn't support my browsers, despite the fact my computer is a 2.5 yr old G4 (I mean, cripes, it's not a 286!!) And upgrading the browsers further means getting a new operating system, and so on... Kevin, it might have been fine for you, but it wasn't for me. Virtually every hotel on there is listed as unavialable, and even if they weren't, if you have no idea where South Chicago is, well, it's shooting in the dark. I did that for Sydney (10 minutes from Oxford street my ass!!!) This is ABSOLUTELY NOT THE CHICAGO GG'S FAULT, but it's still something guests have to contend with.
KevinB
Sorry Chuck but I just didn't have an even similar experience. I went to the first two hotels on the list - both Gay Games Orbitz blocks - and was able to make my selections easily and efficiently and they both had availability. It might be the hotels that you were choosing to review but the four Orbitz block hotels (which are all four on the Orbitz Gay Games page) all still have availability.

As to browsers - well, if you use a Mac, you get what you deserve :-)

Hi:
We're checking out a place to rent in Logan Square for the Games. Good location? How far to Wrigleyville? Downtown? Univ. Chicago area?

Thanks!
softballstud
Jim..

You are better off downtown, Michigan Ave or Lakeview area. Logan Square would work though, if you are finding MUCH lower rates for lodging. The BLUE line 'el' train (which is the one that goes from O'Hare to downtown) runs through that neighborhood. Also, any major east/west street will have buses to take you east, towards the lake - you would then need to transfer to a northbound bus to get to Wrigley. A cab ride to boystown or Wrigley would probably run you around $15 or so, each way.
Jim at Outsports
Found a place that is MUCH cheaper than what we have, which is why we're considering it. Thanks!

The "100 Champions" events over the last weekend were a smashing success. More than 1,000 people in attendance on Saturday Night at the Cadillac Club at Soldier Field (a sold out event) got to see the unveiling of the Gold, Silver and Bronze medals for the 2006 Gay Games.

The medals are designed by acclaimed fine jewelers Lester Lampert Corporate based here in Chicago. We have posted a picture of the medals on our home page at GayGamesChicago.org. The design is really stunning, a pillow shape featuring engraving of the Gay Games logo. Not pictured are the Participant Medals, same design but in a dark pewter color. Every participant will receive a participant medal.

Lester Lamper Corporate is a sponsor of the Gay Games and they are also our official fine jeweler. Saturday night they launched an amazing line of gold, silver and diamond jewelry. I first saw Greg Louganis that night when he was at the Lester Lampert counter trying on rings. Lester Lampert has also created a beautiful display case for the medals that participants can pre-order and pick up at accreditation in Chicago starting 14 July 2006.

All of our merchandise, including links to stores of our official partners, are available online at Store.GayGamesChicago.org.

The Gay Games Racquetball tournament is now full and registration has closed.

The Gay Games Sailing Sports Managers have acquired additional boats. While still nearly full, there is now likely room for 1 or 2 more sailing teams. A waitlist has been established. For details, visit the Sailing Details pages or email mailto:sailing@gaygameschicago.orgsailing@gaygameschicago.org to be placed on the wait list.

The Gay Games Golf Tournament remains open only through the waitlist.

Badminton , Ice Hockey, and Soccer / Football are all at 80% capacity or more. We highly encourage that those interested in these three events register immediately.
