MSNBC is indicating that AP has reported that Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld will step down.

P.S. Sorry for the misspell on Rumsfeld in the topic name. I made the typo in my haste to post this.

2 thoughts on this.

2 Will Shrub appoint Leiberman Secdef? if so, then the Senate becomes a 50/50 tie, and Cheney will be in control.

I smell Rove in all of this

Well I have to say this day is just getting better and better. biggrin.gif

Better late than never, and should have happened some time ago. Something has to give, and looks like its dummy.....lets hope the Prez. makes an intelligent choice to fill the shoes.

Just reported in the Washington Post.

Robert Gates, former head of the CIA, to replace Rumsfeld.

but, but wait...last I heard, he was doing a "fantastic" job

Buh bye Rummy. Dont let the door hit ya on the way out.

Oh sweet Lord, catch Bush's press conference rerun on C-SPAN. Could be funnier than Borat!!!
shep71
Not that I would have wanted this to happen, but why would he wait until the day after the election to get rid of Rumsfeld, as opposed to, oh I don't know, before the election, to stem the tide of anti-war, anti-Republican sentiment? It seems like that would have had an impact on the election, one that would have favored the Republicans.

Makes me wonder if W and Rove really thought they were going to retain the majority in the House and Senate, and didn't need to take this step before the election.

Either way...good riddance!
Illini_fan
He's more than likely resigning because the country reveresed the House and probably the Senate last night mainly because they were pissed off about how the war was going. So, basically, over half the country voted against him last night.
hockeyTom
I don't know when I have ever heard Bush stutter and stammer as much as he did this morning...an embarassment to be sure. rolleyes.gif

The only sad thing is that this dirtbag will collect a huge pension and benefits beyond compare!

Aside from Santorum getting the boot, this IS the best news of all. It's about f--king time! Jerk!

I get the sense that with Brownie doing a heckuva job and Rumsfeld doing a "fantastic job", it becomes the kiss of death. Will he tell the Machiavellian Karl Rove that he's doing a terrific job? (Oh please, we can only hope so.) tongue.gif
fantomas
Good riddance, though it should have happened at the very least a year ago.

Why can't Bush EVER tell the truth, though? Last week he said Rummy was on for 2 more years, today he claims he'd made the decision before the elections, etc. He just LIES LIES LIES. Maybe a subpoena or two will cure him of this just a little bit. It really is tiresome.

Now that Rummy is gone, along with Santorum, Burns, Allen, Talent, and a slew of really hard right-wing House members like Pombo, Hayworth, Ryun, etc., when is Cheney's resignation coming?

Hasn't he also complimented Cheney recently?

(quick, everyone do your Dorothy routine. CLick your heel together and say "there's no place like home").

Gates is no better than Rumsfeld, he's a Bush cronie also.

I really didn't appreciate how Scumsfeld indicated that so many of us don't really understand what this war is about and what they are trying to accomplish.

Typical arrogant response by Scumsie. That's why I can't stand him. He always had that smug look on his face & talked down to people. In the words of Rocky to Bullwinkle: Mr. Know-It-All.

I just hope his resignation will signal a change in the direction of the whole thing. I am just sad it took an election loss for this to happen.

Thank God! He should have resigned after the report on Abu Ghraib sat unread (or so he said) for two months until the media caught wind of it.

So when do impeachment hearings begin? They are long overdue, you know!

Miller, Conyers wants to start impeachment hearings, but I think Mrs. Speaker Pelosi--I LOVE TYPING THAT!!!--will try to hold him back, at least for now.

Don't you think many Republicans are having nightmares within nightmares at the fact that she's going to be Speaker of the House? biggrin.gif

The few Rethugs I know have been walking around with sh*t in their pants for the last 24 hours. You should hear the spin they are trying to put on the elections...fodder for late-night comedians! Some of them continue their deep denial, which, at this point, is more pitiful than humorous, but I laugh at them anyway. I relish this day, this moment. I will also be on duty to stifle anything ignorant the Democratic party may try, should they become drunk with power. It will be so delightful to watch those hypocritical Rethuglicans squirm while their commander-in-chimp is blinded by the white-hot spot light of an investigative committee. Today's press conference proves chimpy sure didn't major in speech and debate while coasting through college. I love America!
Maddog
Well unfortunately we humans are based in ebb and flow, yin and yang. The Dems will eventually be embroiled in scandal again just because power indeed corrupts. It's just our nature at this time in our evolution.

But hopefully we can do some really good things in the next two years and then get a Dem president and right some serious wrongs before we get caught with our pants down again.
UCLAfan
Maddog, that's pretty close to an MIB comment. Interesting!

You are quite correct that the pendulum has swung left now and eventually it will swing right again. Until then, revel in the fact that our Imperious President has had his ambitions drastically curtailed. It's something along the lines of what happens when the schoolyard bully's gang leaves town. What happens to that poor, big bad bully?

My roommate was puzzled as to why this didn't happen before the election in a last ditch effort to try and salvage the elections. My theory is that they knew they were going to lose at least the House and probably the Senate and they purposely held back the announcement so they can now appear to be "hearing" the people and come across as the party of healing. And this announcement, the morning after the Dems historic sweep, steals the headlines from the Democrats. It's the same thing that George Steinbrenner does whenever the Mets manage to get the top story in New York. He'll hold a press conference to announce something that will steal the Mets thunder.

Also, in the outside chance they didn't lose the elections Bush could have kept him team together. Just so shameless.

On the subject of impeachment, I have mixed emotions. While I'd love to see this fraud and liar dragged out of office, I think it would/could be a huge mistake for the Democarts to pursue this. They would appear (at least to a large number of people) to be doing it as revenge for the Clinton fiasco. I think Pelosi summed it up when she said that the American people just don't have an appetite for it.
Elemental
I'm pleased that evil Rumsfeld is resigning. However the former CIA director is no improvement. They are just establishment types linked with the Bush family. I think the U.S. should pull out of Iraq ASAP meaning right now. mad.gif

We also forget so quickly that this move also helps the Democrats in Congress. It gets them off the hook to come up with a plan on their own. It just looks to me that our Imperious President is a bad poker player, showing overconfidence in the wake of strength (i.e., Rove saying he had "The Math" right before the elections) and vast underconfidence in a time of weakness (i.e., getting rid of Rummy the Dummy yesterday in the wake of the elections).
