Wow! This is huge for our neighbor down south. Hopefully, it'll change the entire country & that other latin countries follow suit in the future. Viva Mexico City! wink.gif

Actually, this is downright shocking, considering how Catholic Mexico is. Que bueno! Me gusta Mexico!

And South Africa's parliament has approved civil unions, making it only one of a handful of nations to do so!. Keep in mind that the African National Congress government pushed this through, by an overwhelming majority. One bummer--it allows religious and civil authorities to opt out of performing ceremonies, a sop to the overwhelmingly anti-gay Christian community down there. Some of the arguments by ANC figures on behalf of the legislation were very moving.

Most people probably don't know the history of the limitations that the Church has in Mexico due to its strict laws (moreso than say the US). Here's a recent article re: Fox & the history of the Church in Mexico.

QUOTE
For decades, the strict exclusion of religion from the public schools, the restrictions on the Church’s political activities, and the ban on Church-owned media have been considered a treasured legacy of 19th-century liberalism by the Mexican political, intellectual, and media elite. Among this elite, it is a widely shared view that the Church must limit itself to the "spiritual sphere"—that it should not even express public views on social issues, much less political ones.

Too bad this wasn't the interpretation in our Constitution! rolleyes.gif
