Can you provide a link, Cougar Fan? I didn't think the BCS standings were going to be released for a couple of hours still.
Michigan must really be ranked higher in the computers than USC then, because USC is ranked 2nd in both polls (Harris and coaches) and Michigan is #3 in both. I still think USC will move higher if the Trojans beat Notre Dame Saturday and UCLA the following week.

Yes, Michigan is still
#2. Looks like there may be a rematch.
According to
this site Michigan is still #2 with the computers--which isn't suprising since they did beat highly ranked Notre Dame and their only loss is to the #1 team in the country, rather than Oregon St. They might need to really slaughter ND to get voters to pick them. If they lose, Notre Dame is going to have a hard time being picked over Michigan because they lost so badly to them. It looks like Florida or Arkansas would have a tough time making it to the BCS game, even if they did manage to get to #2 in the polls, since the computers are not favoring them.

I think some people want to see a OSU/Michigan rematch but I think other schools should have a shot to play Ohio State. Just a bit shocked that Michigan is #2.

Welcome to the madness called the BCS. If it does end up with an OSU/Michigan rematch I think a lot of people will really push for a playoff system to replace it. That might be the straw that breaks that camel's back.

I don't know if anything will ever get college football to a playoff system. Not when the ADs and Presidents see all of the money being made in the current bowl system. But could you imagine a playoff something like this (for example):
1. Ohio State
16. Middle Tennessee State
8. West Virginia
9. Oklahoma
4. Florida
13. BYU
5. Notre Dame
12. LSU
3. Southern California
14. Houston
6. Louisville
11. Boston College
7. Arkansas
10. Boise State
2. Michigan
15. Ohio

The soonest that an actual tournament would happen would be when Satan is on ice skates in Hell.

as long as there's millions of dollars being kicked around by the bowl committees and the networks, we'll never have a play-off

Would a playoff system really solve all the complaints or just create a new set of them ???
In the scenario above, Middle Tennessee State and Ohio Univ. are in a hypothetical 16-team playoff, but 11-1 Wisconsin and 9-2 Texas, two Top 10 teams are left out. The arguments that only the best teams should get in the playoffs will be re-newed as will wrangling over conferences bids and at-large bids (and who/how are the at-large bids decided). That will lead to people demanding that the playoffs be 32 teams and then 64 and so on.....

Yeah only the best need to be in the playoffs. I know we need to try to accomodate all but those 14-16 seeds are not worthy IMO.

I'd start out at 24 teams instead of 16 with that setup with the 11 conference champs and 13 at large bids, very similar to what the ratio of at large/champions is to the hoops tourney....

Or just eliminate conference affiliation and take the Top 16 BCS as currently situated. That would set up the following tournament:
1. Ohio State
16. Georgia Tech
8. Wisconsin
9. Louisville
4. Florida
13. Texas
5. Notre Dame
12. Auburn
3. Southern Cal
14. Rutgers
6. Arkansas
11. Boise State
7. West Virginia
10. LSU
2. Michigan
15. Oklahoma
If you couldn't find a way to incorporate these matchups into the current bowl alignment and make a LOT of money, well someone is doing something wrong. Even if the higher ranked team got the first round at home.

I agree - or you could just incorporate both systems and take the Top BCS rated teams from each conference along with the Top 10
1. Ohio State
16. Middle Tennessee State
8. Wisconsin
9. Louisville
4. Florida
13. BYU
5. Notre Dame
12. Georgia Tech
3. Southern California
14. Houston
6. Arkansas
11. Texas
7. West Virginia
10. Boise State
2. Michigan
15. Ohio
(okay I know these posts are getting ridiculous - I just can't stop dreaming of a playoff system.)

....or how about we create the simplest playoff system and use the BCS system to rank the 6 major conference champs and 4 at-large teams. Then from that we take the top 2 teams and let them play for the national championship. Ok. Done.
