Legendary director Robert Altman died yesterday at the age of 81. He directed some terrific films throughout his career including MASH, Nashville, McCabe and Mrs. Miller, Gosford Park, The Player, Short Cuts and this summer's A Prarie Home Companion.

Such sad news. Loved much of his work (MASH, McCabe, Gosford Park) - did her ever win an Oscar? Not that he cared.

Couldn't bring myself to see Prairie Home Companion -- like some of his other work -- looked like a mess.

But such was his vision. He made films the way he saw them. Rather have that than banal crowdpleasers like Spielberg.

Prairie Home Companion was good, not great. I admire his work (particularly The Player, Short Cuts and 3 Women), but am not overly saddened by his death. He lived into his 80s and had a good, productive life.

He was nominated for Best Director five times but never won the Oscar. I'm pretty sure he got one of those Honorary Oscars though.

Altman received an Honorary Oscar this past March.
