I referred to the blatant homophobia in Jamaica, though the other caribbean countries might not be better.
Nice pictures. I like
this guy. A wee bit chubby, I like that.
I need a boyfriend.
You know, we brothas call that "thick." There's a lot more "thick" papis down in DR, if you know what I mean.
The other Caribbean countries are nowhwere near as homophobic, though none are liberated, say, as other parts of North or South America, like Canada or Brazil. The Anglophone countries tend to be the most homophobic, but the Bahamas, Bermuda, Barbados, Trinidad & Tobago, Anguilla, Antigua, St. Vincents & Grenadines, US Virgin Islands, British Virgin Islands, etc. are *not* as homophobic as Jamaica. The Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and Cuba all have some gay infrastructure, especially in the capitals, though the societies are macho, and Catholic in the first two, Communist in the third. Haiti has no gay infrastructure at all, but once was a gay paradise for rich Europeans. (Remember too that the religions of santería and vodoun/vodun both accept homosexuality as part of religious belief and practice.) There are lots of gay/bi Haitian guys in the Dominican Republic. Martinique and Guadeloupe are French
départements/colonies, so all the French protections for gays are in place, though the societies are considerably more macho than mainland France (sort of like black society in the US south vs. black society in New York City). Aruba, St. Maarten, and Curaçao are somewhere in between.
Nevertheless, as a friend told me recently, because Jamaica is so homophobic, if you travel there as a foreigner and hook up in advance with horny Jamaican gay person, you can basically have the time of your life. I wouldn't chance, but just saying. And
this (not safe for work) is one reason people still want to dare it.
