And the winner is....
Eric Gagne of the Dodgers. He finished well ahead of Jason Schmidt and Mark Prior.

Rats! I was rooting for Schmidt, but Gagne's 55 for 55 record is impressive as hell. Too bad he's so ugly. frown

Congratulations to
Canadian Eric Gagne, only the 2nd Canadian to win the Cy Young Award (the other being Ferguson Jenkins for the Cubs in '71). He was courtside at the Lakers game last night, and while he's no Shawn Green, I wouldn't call him "ugly."

The best pitcher threw 82 innings? I don't get it, I really don't...

Besides the fact that Gagne's a fat sausage boy, Bill W's point on number of innings hits a chord with me as well. Its just plain foolish for starting pitchers would be passed over for a closer.

First Roy 'Doc' Halladay wins the AL Cy Young award, and now Eric Gagne does the same in the NL! A great week for baseball fans in Canada; I hope this helps raise the profile of the game up here (would love for the Expos to move to Calgary, but I know that ain't gonna happen). I was a little surprised that Gagne won, being a relief pitcher, but his numbers are impressive. Looks don't factor into the voting, billsf! Maybe there should be a separate award category. Poor Eric didn't even make it to Charlie's Dodgers Hotties poll (see Hot Jock Talk, July 17/03), but of course how could he compete with Paul Lo Duca and Shawn Green?

Sure, 55 out of 55 saves sounds impressive. But it's not like this guy is perfect like how the media always paints him to be. I've seen him pitch games when they weren't a save opportunity and he blew it for the Dodgers! I was rooting for Jason Schmidt as well, who has had an incredible season after last year.

Congrats to Eric Gagne.
At the same time, I sense that some posters are not enamored by Gagne's physical appearance. Personally, I do find him to be a very attractive bearish man.
I guess one man's "ewww" is another man's "mmmm".

Though Gagne's accomplishments are tremendous, and I did support him for the Cy Young Award, it would be smart for MLB to create a separate prize for relievers (something more prestigious than the "Rolaids Reliever of the Year" thing) so the Cy Young can go to starters.
