OK, maybe I overstated the topic a bit. However, this MSNBC story certainly indicates at least one mother from Georgia wants to take her local school district in that direction, by demanding the removal of all Harry Potter books from her child's school.

I thought we were living in the 21st century America, not 17th-century Salem. I guess this particular mother would be in her glory if we were. dry.gif

Wasn't book-burning a cornerstone of the Nazi movement in 1930s Germany or Communist-era Russia? It disappoints me that some people still do not understand the freedoms that we enjoy and that they are free to choose NOT to read those books.

Can't say I am surprised. The American Library Assoc maintains a rather long and impressive list of books that have been banned, or attempted to be banned, by school boards and librarys many of which are works of classic literature such as Merchant of Venice, Huck Finn and Catcher in the Rye. There will always be people who think they should decide what others can read and think, unfortunately they are usually the meanest and most small minded of the population. Fortunately, as in this case, they fail in their attempts at censorship more than they succeed. The ignorant, like the poor, will always be with us.
