Every December 31st in Japan, the biggest entertainers in Japan gather for the Red & White Song Festival (Kouhaku Uta Gassen). The contest pits the men(White) against the women (red). This is the 57th year of the competition and I have not missed one as far as I can remember. So, since I started watching at around age 7, I probably have seen/remembered 34 of them.
This year, the most controversial performance ever occured on the program. An act called DJ Ozma performed their song "Age Age Every Night" and by the end of the song, some of the women dancers had stripped to their g-strings baring their boobs on tv. After the performance, the announcer told the viewing audience that the dancers were not "hadaka" or naked, but were wearing body suits. Calls flooded the NHK switchboard with people complaining about the nudity. Imagine if this happened here. Ozma would have been publically flogged and stoned! This performance made nipple gate look like a Disney production. And watch the end of the performance when the girls take down their pants. Are those dildo's attached to their g-strings??? The YouTube video isn't clear and I'm waiting for my mom to send the program to me since she reccords it every year for me.
The song itself is probably the catchiest since O-Zone's song "Drangonstea Din Tei" a couple years ago (you know, Mai ya hee, Mai ya ho, Mai ya ha ha).
Anyway, here it is. Come on and "Bounce with me, bounce with me..."
DJ Ozma
And the White won the competition for the second year in a row, and 3rd time in 4 years.
