The simple fact about the departure of Duguay and Duthel should be analysed as a decision related to many problems. This has to be investigated to be sure that those are not false departures BUT: if thisis the case, i mean a real departure for those two very problematic poeple, I beleive that the Outgames diserve a chance now to show their good faith towards the gay community, show truth and respect in their manners and i may come to the conclusion that the decision to get rid of some poeple in the organisation was a good one.

One thing is very important, this decision got rid of the situation involving a criminal record and just that was a sound and logival decision.
kenmac
Tom,

You are clearly amazing!

You have never hid the fact that you feel contempt for people that disagree with you but you have now gone even further.

You should re-read my post and discover that it is not my facts that refutes your statements, it is the "facts" quoted from your organizations very web site. Facts that were posted on your website the same day that you gave alternate "facts"

I can understand that you dislike the fact that I noticed your errors and even more so, the fact that I mentioned them on this board. What I don't get is how you can miss the point so clearly.

Your numbers disagree with your numbers. It is you that needs to clarify things in your own camp and stop putting out different "true facts and statisitics" that refute other information on your own website.

Please change the "facts" on your website so that they can at least not be in contradiction of your "facts"

Oh and by the way, it is not good form to blame others when you don't do your homework!

Ken
Strider
So, way back when, the Montreal folks allegedly refused to pay the $650K US for the "brand" name of the Gay Games, and now they're getting sued for a similar amount ($1 million+ CAN) for allegedly maligning the "brand" name of Pride Beer.

Isn't it ironic? Doncha think?
Travelpat
Wow - the sleazy smear campaign just does not want to end. Tom - good choice to stop posting here. Ken and company will just continue to distort what you say and continue to repeat discredited half truths etc. The number of employees exchange would be laughable if not so sad.

Sad because I truly believe Ken thinks that somehow he may be helping the Gay Games with his posts and with his role in smearing everything Outgames, along with some other individuals. Bringing up 15 year old court cases that had the person involved bothered, would have been sealed or expunged records. Unfortunately the person involved had not bothered to do that, not imagining that some people would stoop so low as to publicize those records in a blatant smear campaign attempting to tear down the work of hundreds of GLBT people involved with building the Outgames. Never mind the devastating personal impact on that person and their family. Truly indefensible and disgraceful.

If I thought the people involved in the smear campaign were fair sorts I would make an appeal to them to just lay off the smears. But somehow I doubt that would work. So maybe if I make the appeal this way - perhaps they might notice.

Your smear campaign is not only making life difficult for the Outgames and those involved with it, it is now negatively impacting the Gay Games too.

Here in Toronto, I and others on the Team Toronto board firmly believe that nobody in the executive of the FGG or involved with Chicago 2006 are involved in this smear campaign. Unfortunately others - at least here in Toronto - are not reaching the same conclusion. They see the relationships of some of those involved in this smear campaign and reach what I consider to be the wrong conclusion. They see that some involved in this blatant smear campaign, are involved with organizations that are partnered with Chicago. And because of that connecting of the dots so to speak, others are reaching a different conclusion that mine or that of our Team Toronto board. They are reaching the unfortunate conclusion that there is involvement. So as a result we now have some people involved in GLBT sports here in Toronto asking others to support their demands that Team Toronto withdraw from the FGG. This sentiment is becoming so wide spread that even one Toronto gay media commentator last month referred to this smear campaign as 'Chicago's dirty tricks campaign'. And with that belief gaining traction here, the damage to the FGG and Chicago is mounting. I repeat that I DO NOT SUPPORT THIS ARGUMENT. But I can not deny it is out there and growing.

So I make an appeal - not on behalf of the Outgames, but on behalf of all of GLBT sport - including the Gay Games, that you cut with this smear campaign, and utilize all the abundant energies that you seem to have, not tearing down the Outgames and those involved with the Outgames, but instead use those energies in a more positive fashion to build the Gay Games.

We ALL would be better off if you did.

Pat
Strider
"smear campaign, smear campaign, etc."

Pat, in all seriousness, how in the heck is this a Gay Games plot? They're not involved in it. It's a lawsuit, brought by a beer distributor and two (I think) small gay newspapers in Quebec.

They allege that Outgames is doing the smearing. How is it that Gay Games people are involved? Did someone at Gay Games force Duthel to make allegedly litigious remarks about Pride Beer?

And how is this some old legal thing, when the lawsuit was brought only days ago over events between Pride Beer and Outgames?

How is it the Gay Games fault when two Outgames staff members embroiled in the suit resigned?

Goodness, you're making LACharlie seem level-headed by comparison.
Edito
Strider is soooooo right!!!!! RIGHT! 100%.

Toronto is 5 hours from Montreal by the way, very far in all means!

I still feel that Travelpat needs to know more and at least, since we are discussing about this situation, that new insight could be made now.

There was the existence of a prior criminal file implicating a very high member of the Outgames. No one is saying that the Outgames knew about this, it was probably not revealed to them before that's it.

However, the criminal file with many accusations yes, but with many gulty pleads too was about fraud and extorsion, not adding the kidnapping and sequestration all made from one person, only one. There is a victim too and we have to think about this victim. Any raisonnable person on earth could be worried, more if it is a sponsor of the organisation, that if this person was involved in major fraud and was arrested by the police for it, why is this person now having something to do with the millions of public money for the Outgames?

Let me repeat something important Travelpat: The Outgames are receiving public money, from the governments, it is not a private organisation (private money) and it has to explain itself even more if someone taking financial decisions is a criminal or has a past criminal behavior. You are not a criminal, nore am i, we certainly did something right in our lifes no?

This person did someting wrong and we have to be aware of this conduct and exercice a very tight surveillance to BE SURE THAT THE OUTGAMES WILL GO ON AND BE A SUCCESS INSTEAD OF A FAILIURE, like New-York, Amsterdam and Sydney. Many poeple lost money is those past gay games, they were never paid after for their services, can we think about that too?

Now, something more. In the last 3 years, every time someone asked to verify the books, just to see if that person was profiting from the public money, Outgames not only refused, they attacked this persons reputation, whoever it was and they were many.

By the way Travelpat, are you selling any travels to Montreal since you are a travel agent? A simple question hum?

Now, i have never heard any request from the Chicago team and many poeple were aware of this criminal file a long time before Chicago existed as a gay games city. This file is public and a copy circulated by mail a long time ago. Maybe for you Travelpat, fraud, kidnapping and extorsion is nothing, for some poeple it is something important. For me it is unacceptable to be represented internationnaly by a criminal, i am from Montreal!

Travelpat, it is so easy to discuss with clear ideas and not resort to irrespective arguments to prove a point that does not exist. You have to recognize that this situation may be worrysome for some investors in the Montreal games, if it is not important for you, it's ok, but respect the worries of others.

I repeat, I have never received any demand, or claim, or any information from the Chicago team, actually, i think they have classe and are professionnally acting in this situation. Outgames will respond to the court case with their arguments in good time. They may have done something very wrong but the poeple at the origin of the court case are not there anymore, is Outgame diserving a chance now to do good? Why not, i beleive they should have that chance.

Just a correction about the case. It was filed by the Pride beer against Outgames and against two other medias, it does not involve Pride and two medias together against Outgames like said earlier.

Thank guys for having to read my poor english and take care Travelpat.
KevinB
Again, I repeat my previously deleted comment, this time to TravelPat who is trying so very hard to make this a Gay Games issue.

Do not attempt to drag Chicago Gay Games (or the FGG for that matter) into the internal squabbling in Montreal. You know perfectly well that none of us have anything to do with this and your "others believe this, but not me" attempts at insinuations are just tired retreads of similar strategies you've used here before. The answer to the "shadows" theory is to ensure the topic has the light of day, which is what Edito seems to be ensuring.

The parties in Montreal should have the courage to own this issue as their own and play it out as they see fit without trying to involve us.

Kevin Boyer
Gay Games VII

P.S. It is true that Le Point is a sponsor of the Gay Games. They came to us and asked to be a sponsor and we were glad for the visibility. However, you'll note that To Be Magazine is also a sponsor. They're the publication being sued. So much for Pat's conspiracy theories.

Pat,

First of all thank-you for your references to the legal problems of the personnel from the OutGames staff.

If you read back, you will see that I asked or challenged you to find out more for us. In a back-handed way (with an attempt to slap me for asking the question) you told us more than I knew when I asked the question.

I am repulsed by the answer!! The article referred to a criminal past but I never would have dreamed it would be so spicy.

Apparently you know even more than you have said so far but I suspect that your response is clear and you will not reveal more.

May I say that I am never surprised when you tell me that the people you have contact with are repeating your views as their own. It is clear you are not providing a fair and reasonable representation of the events. You are making a living off of one of the events, how could you be considered impartial?

As for me twisting the words of Tom - I merely repeated his words and the concurrent posting on the OutGames website and pointed out that they contradict each other!

Presuming that the Out Games folks actually control the content on their own website, I have shown that they are contradicting themselves. The fact tha tI have been able to be successful on several occasions with no rebuttal other than calling me names and telling me that I am to be pitied, Tom has had nothing to say that clarified any of the issues.

If you really want to ensure that the GLBT Sport world is not hurt, talk to your friends and ask them to provide clear information that is transparent and respectful and cut out the cloak and dagger behind the scenes stuff. Also. cut out the slagging of everyone that disagrees with you. Clarity and the opportunity to discuss the issues will go further than name calling and insults.

In addition, please do not threaten us with the "It's my ball and I am going home so you guys can't keep playing" mentality.

Whetehr you like it or not, these discussions need to continue and information needs to be forthcoming. When it isn't, questions will be asked.

I have been through situations with other organizations where everyone just wanted to say - Relax and trust them they are good people - and then things when to heck and everyone else was left holding the bag.

I, for one will not back down to your statment or Tom's name calling and pity statements.

If you want me to be quiet - get them to tell us what the real scoop is and cut out the spin doctor stuff!

Ken
Travelpat
Like I said before - I'm trying to stay positive. Kevin, I absolutely agree with you - this should not be a Gay Games issue. But when media here - MEDIA - not me - have already used the term 'Chicago's dirty tricks campaign' last month - then that I think is a problem for you. Not sure if it is a major one, probably not - but it certainly does not help the Gay Games.

I was approached about two weeks ago by 5 Team Toronto members asking me to put forward a motion at our January 9 Team Toronto board meeting - to have Team Toronto re-consider our membership in the FGG - based on their belief of Chicago's involvement with this smear campaign against the Outgames. I disagreed with them and said I would not do that. At that board meeting we (the Team Toronto board) did discuss all of this and we all agreed that this is a smear campaign - including our rep on the FGG board. As I clearly stated we also believe we do not think anybody from the FGG or Chicago is involved.

Again this past Thusday evening - out for the first time in six weeks with guys from my volleyball league - I was again asked by a group - who are registered for the Outgames - if it was true that Team Toronto was pulling out of the FGG because of this smear campaign. And again I found myself defending you guys against those accusations.

As for the resignations, one of them had nothing to do with the suit, it had to do with the smear campaign dragging up a 16 year old court case combined with a very sad personal family matter. A family matter that I have been told about with a request that the details of that matter be kept private, which I will honour. This person had already been playing a reduced role since June in the day to day operations of the Outgames because of this family matter and when this smear campaign began, it was the straw that broke the camels back, and for very legitimate family reasons a resignation was submitted. The week BEFORE the suit.

And as for Jean Yves Duthel, he has in fact moved into a position working for the Mayor of Montreal as director of city projects - with the Outgames being one of the biggest major projects of the year for the City of Montreal. He will also continue in his role with the Conference on LGBT Rights that kicks off the Outgames.

So Ken those are the facts - at least as I know them. And Edito just to answer your question - which the others who have been posting on this board are aware - yes I do work for one of the two Canadian companies selling Outgames travel packages. I have never tried to hide that. I am also the Team Toronto rep on the GLISA board.

As for cloak and dagger stuff - sorry Ken - I don't know of any deep dark secrets. I do know the Outgames are in great shape with huge paid registration numbers - from all over the world, great corporate, government and community support. 51 (as of Jan. 9) staff and hundreds of other volunteers working to deliver the biggest GLBT Human Rights conference, sport and cultural event ever. For those of us here in Toronto - it is certainly the most talked about gay event of any kind for 2006.

Travelpat, i appreciate your infos and your reply. Thank you.
KevinB
Well, Pat, I've written to our Team Toronto representatives to find out what they think.

We can't keep people from making shit up. Anyone who reads the information on this chat board would clearly see that this is internal Montreal stuff. The deleted post that slammed Edito, for example, illustrates how these percolating issues are about Montreal community conflicts. Other posts suggest an ongoing conflict with the group that is now suing M2006. These have nothing to do with the Gay Games except for paranoid people who see a bogeyman around every corner.

Chicago nor the FGG have anything to do this nor do we want anything to do with this. Some people here may watch and comment with bemusement or about karma, but that’s because M2006 has made enemies through their own doing (and, frankly, through many of your own posts here). It has nothing to do with us. I appreciate your continuing to make that point clear to your friends in Toronto.

Kevin

Pat,

Your facts stand for themselves and are appreciated.

I still have a hard time with the concept that it is okay for you to jump all over me when I quote the inaccuracies of the OutGames folks. On their own website!

I clearly come from a different side of the fence on this but you used to at least be civil. After Tom stated that he pitied me, your tone changed to the point where you don't read what you write.

I think it is very possible that the info that you referred to as a smear may not be at all important with this issue. I guess the concern that people have is that these things have remained hidden until someone else discovers it and then all of a sudden you have the inside scoop. More importantly, you chose not to reveal it simply because they chose not to reveal it. But they did reveal it to you.

Let's see the facts and then let's get on with it.

Kevin has been clear that anyone can choose to believe what they will and we must all help people to understand the issues. That jumping to conclusions thing should now be an Olympic event!

Finally, I went abck to the OutGames site early this morning Vancouver time and the contradicting information was still there. Perhpas Tom could speak to whoever is responsible and make the insanity go away!

Ken
Travelpat
Hey Kevin - for the most part I agree with you. And in the long run I am confident this will all blow over. There is no doubt all of us on the Team Toronto board will support your event - as we always have - just like we fully support the Outgames and are angered by the smear campaign of recent weeks.

I knew an appeal on behalf of the Outgames would be useless, but I was hoping to stop the smear campaign - by pointing out that that campaign was causing some collateral damage to your event. Because it is. And since I do believe those who are continually posting negative (often inaccurate) things about the Outgames, are supposedly supporters of the Gay Games, that perhaps by pointing out that collateral damage, they perhaps might take more care in what they say here. I'm not trying to muzzle anybody, but I just wanted to put that thought out there.
Strider
I'm sorry, Pat, but if there's any "smearing" being done here, it's by you.

You make allegations about "MEDIA," then don't substantiate it with quotes or references. Who said this? So far, only you have said this.

You repeatedly hammer in the "rumors" and "talk" about a FGG/CGI link/plot to the lawsuit, but slither away from reporting any facts. You just allude to anonymous people making allegations.

Yes, it would be very convenient for Outgames if everyone ignored it. The articles linked are by writers and publications with an accused bias against Outgames.

I'm still waiting for an article about this here on OutSports. But apparently, prognosticating about pro football -which has absolutely nothing to do with the gay sports community- seems to be a higher priority.
Edito
I think we have well established that:

1- There was a real law suit for acts commited by Outgames and some individuals;

2- The two most agressive poeple involved in the law suit are not in the Outgames anymore;

3- We have discovered today, only today, that Duthel commited something else just before christmas that could easilly result in another law suit against Outgames;

4- Chicago or the FGG had nothing to do with multiple news articles about a criminal past and some other issues, journalists don't need advises from a foreign country to read the court documents;

Since there seems to be another administration now with the Outgames, I beleive it would be easy to see if some changes are going to be made. The new co-chair, a lady, seems to have done a good job before with the Gay Chamber of Commerce, she may be willing to show a new path towards a respectful projetc, even if it is a little late to speak of good relations with the FGG.

About Kevinb's comments: you repeated many times that this situation was very local and was only inside the walls of Montreal. Wromg. It involves many countries, many international teams and no, it is not a two-street size drama. It is a real situation that gets over the borders.

I will ask for informations to the Outgames very soon and i will make you a report here on the results of some feelings i have. I'm quite sure that the Outgames will take the opportunity to do good after those recent changes in administration, i'll make a follow up here soon.
kenmac
Hi,

I just went to the OutGames site to see if the remarks by Tom were reflected in their website so that the information he gave us here was reflected at that site.

I was quite surprised to see that they have updated their website with their new staffing information as below:

From one person in December 2001, we are today 48 full time employees (as of 18 January 2006). At the games, roughly 50 full time employees and 5,000 volunters will work hard to deliver the event.

This was directly pulled from their website at:

http://www.montreal2006.org/en_permanent_staff.html

This information still refutes the information that Tom gave us!

Unbelievable.

I know there is at least one person out there thinking that this is a small deal but when you consider the ease with which Tom gives us whatever information he feels like passing out as fact - without concern of contradiction from his own people, what else are we being told.

I can hear Pat talking about this as a "Smear Campaign" or something like that but it is simply a declaration of truth.

Tom and the OutGames staff control all of the variables here, not me. It is not my interpretation.

Fool me once, shame on you
Fool me twice, shame on me!

Hi guys,

As mentionned in my last posting, I had a telephone conversation today with the new co-chair of the Montreal Outgames, Miss Dupere. We had an honnest and good conversation about the last years of events, it was short but it was positive. She is a business women, not an amateur, it seems obvious.

Miss Dupere asked to not have to make any comments right now, so many things were hapenning at the same time and it is understandable. We agreed that we should talk more and discuss about what she wants Montreal Outgames to be vs what it was until recently, i think it was a wise demand.

I'm sure that in a short future, we will know better the difference between the last administration and this new one.
Edito
Today, at 10 a.m. Montreal local time, at the Montreal Court house, the Pride legal action against Outgames for 1.1 Million$ was received and accepted by the Court. A schedual was placed for the two sides to present the defense and all the documents needed is such a case. I will be able soon to tell you the details of this schedual since i will receive it tomorow.
Travelpat
For up to date news on the event, the latest newsletter for the Outgames is out.

http://www.montreal2006.org/en_newsletter.html

Lots of news about the wonderful things happening with the International GLBT Human Rights portion of the conference. Sports related news - Basketball and Ice Hockey have gone over the top and surpassed the totals expected so new venues have been added to accommodate more athletes. Other sports have added venues to handle the demand. These include soccer, waterpolo, dance sport and badminton. (Just as an aside here, gay badminton has become HUGE here in Toronto).

Lots of other interesting info too. And although I mentioned this before I think one of the really neat more recent additions to the Montreal 2006 website, is this link.
http://www.montreal2006.org/en_ville.aspx

It lists for each sport, the home cities from which people have registered in that sport. For the Marathon for instance, you can see registrations have even been received from cities in Cameroon, Nigeria, Morocco, Senegal and Zimbabwe. That's just great!
Edito
Yesterday, there was a general election in Canada. A new Prime minister was elected and the Conservative party took power. After the departure of the co-chair of the Outgames and her associate Jean-Yves Duthel, the godmother of the Montreal games, the Minister of parliament Liza Frulla, was not reelected and was expelled from the government.

Was that a strong message about the situation?

GREAT link, Pat. I've been wondering, both for Chicago and Montreal. Does Chicago have a link like this, Kevin?
KevinB
No, Chuck. We're considering ways to report registrants in fun ways as well.
kenmac
Kevin and Chuck,

You are right that they have put forward a cute indication of the locations of their potential participants and I love it that they have included every town and suburb as home location.

I saw that there were some folks coming from some very redneck towns here in BC and across Canada. I would love it if the folks in those communities were aware of these participants in a gay event.

What I really had to smile at though, was the Bear competition! At this point there is no criteria for judging but it is a competition nonetheless! I wonder if the Drag Queens are upset that they didn't get a Drag competition? Or are they?

Dear Lord.

I heard from a Team Toronto member that there are @ 500 people registered for the Outgames from southern Ontario (Golden Horseshoe Toronto and down to Windsor) and about 80 for the Gay Games. Could this be correct?
KevinB
I cannot speak for M2006 registrations but your data regarding Toronto registrations in the Gay Games is not correct. And no, we don't post data like this to chat boards.
Travelpat
Since Team Toronto has been mentioned let me jump in here.

We are trying to get as many people from Toronto who have registered for either Chicago or Montreal to contact Team Toronto so that we can get a better handle on what sort of numbers we really have. We want to be able to have a good count and more importantly we would like to get your contact details so that we can coordinate all of our many upcoming activities for such things as team uniforms, fundraising etc. So if you are from the Toronto area and have registered, or are planning to register, for either Chicago or Montreal could you please contact us at Team Toronto at info@torontosportsalliance.com so that we can include you in our upcoming Team Toronto activities. We need lots of volunteers to help out with a variety of activities that we have planned for this big year. Check-out our website at www.torontosportsalliance.com for upcoming meetings and events.

I do know that we will have more people in Montreal than in Chicago, that is no real surprise to anyone. But I think we will continue our tradition of having a very good representation at the Gay Games. I think both events will see a real spike in registrations from this area over the next couple of months. Unlike the last two Gay Games where people had to plan well in advance because of having to arrange flights with the long distance travel, both of these events are within driving distance. So it is just now - I think - that many people are really beginning to give some serious thought about attending one or both of these events this summer.

Kevin - I think you'll be happy to know that I put one of your recent posts to good use yesterday. I cut and paste your recent reply to Chuck on the Chicago discussion board about accommodation options, to a friend here in Toronto who had emailed me asking for suggestions for accommodation for up to 30 Toronto area soccer players for your event.

A SMALL UPDATE:

The INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE POISED FOR SUCCES

The International Conference on LGBT Human Rights, presented by the 1st World Outgames from 26 to 29 July 2006, has made an important step forward this week with the launch of the Preliminary Programme for the event, which will be held at the Palais des Congrès, Montréal’s prestigious convention centre (also the venue for the recent United Nations Climate Change Conference). It marks the beginning of an important international recruitment campaign to reach individuals and organisations in more than one hundred countries. Over the four days of the Conference, some 2000 delegates will discuss the current state and the future of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights worldwide.

Already more than 800 people have proposed workshops related to the main Conference themes: The essential rights, global issues, diversity with the LGBT community, participation in society and creating social change.

“The Conference will help us to reach our ultimate goal, that of legal and social justice of the kind already enjoyed by more and more LGBT people living in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa, most Western European countries and in some parts of the United States, compared with those who live in African, Asian, Eastern European and Latin American countries,” said Ms. Joke Swiebel, Co-President of the International Scientific Committee for the Conference.

The Declaration of Montréal will be adopted and presented to delegates at the close of the Conference proceedings. It will then be presented to United Nations authorities and to national governments to mobilise unequivocal support for the respect of LGBT rights. This will be the legacy of the Conference, one that will be enriched by the participation of a large number of individuals from a diverse range of backgrounds and cultures.

The International Conference on LGBT Human Rights will bring to Montréal legal scholars, opinion leaders, academics, researchers, specialists and human rights defenders from around the world. With more than 800 delegates already registered, the success of the Conference in July 2006 is virtually assured. Objectives for the Conference, in terms of amplitude and attendance, will be attained or even surpassed.

“We are proud to have the support of many internationally respected partners in the organisation of the Conference, including the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (the Task Force), the National Organization for Women (NOW), the Gay & Lesbian Athletics Foundation (GLAF), Hivos, the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission, ILGA-World and ILGA-Europe, the COC, the world’s oldest LGBT sport organisation, based in the Netherlands, Homosport Nederland, Égale Canada, la Table de concertation des organismes lesbiens et gais du Québec, the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC) from the United States and the European Association of Gay Chambers of Commerce,” added Ms. Louise Roy, CEO of Montréal 2006.

“In presenting this ambitious project, the Outgames organisers have demonstrated their determination and their vision in linking the LGBT sports movement with the global fight for LGBT rights as human rights. This was a courageous decision – one that we feel was, without question, the correct one. What the Outgames and the Conference have in common is defending the human right of every LGBT person in the world to participate fully, openly and equally in every part of life, without hiding their sexual orientation or gender identity, including in every sport, at every level, from their neighbourhood to the Olympic Games, and at every age, be it 18 or 88,” concluded Mr. Robert Wintemute, Co-President of the International Scientific Committee.

Volunteers

Register as a volunteer on our website. More than 2,000 volunteers recruted already!

The 1st World Outgames has once again surpassed its objectives. As of 31 December 2005, more than 2,000 volunteers have been recruited for the Outgames. The goal for 2006 is to recruit another 500 volunteers per month and perhaps as many as 750 volunteers in certain months. This will ensure that we reach our target of 5,000 volunteers before the opening of the Outgames. The recruiting team would like to send out their warmest thanks to all those who have worked closely with us to help us reach our goals.

In January and February, the 1st World Outgames team is looking for:
Volunteers to play leadership roles in the training of volunteers:

SPORTS

Sports reaching maximum capacity for the 1st World Outgames!

Register now!
Montréal 2006 opens up new spaces in Basketball, Ice Hockey and Soccer to allow more athletes to register!

Thank to the recent team and group promotions, the 1st World Outgames are thrilled to announce that we have exceeded our registration objectives in Basketball and Ice Hockey. Registrations for many other disciplines have already surpassed 50% of their maximum capacities. The 1st World Outgames sports team is expecting the number of registrations to rise dramatically over the next few months, so they encourage all athletes who would like to participate in the largest LGBT sport and cultural event in history to register now.

To meet the demand, Montréal 2006 has increased the number of competition sites to accommodate a greater number of teams in these sports.

Many other disciplines are already reaching the maximum number of athletes. Watch for the next edition of the Club Montréal 2006; we will be announcing the closing dates for registrations in the following disciplines:

Sport Number of participants vs. initial capacity
Basketball 108%
Ice Hockey 101%
Soccer (football) 90%
Water Polo 71%
Dancesport 69%

Site of the month: the Olympic Park

Of all the sites used for the 1st World Outgames Montréal 2006, the Olympic Park remains for Montrealers the sport venue par excellence and, of course, the very heart of the 1976 Olympic Games. Thirty years later, Montréal will once again welcome the world, this time for an extraordinary “rendez-vous” in a unique new format.

1. Perimeter structure of the Olympic Stadium

The offices of the Montréal 2006 Organising Committee are location within the perimeter structure of the (1) Olympic Stadium.

The Olympic Park will be the site of many different sport competitions and the prestigious venue for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies. The site will also be one of four “Villages” set up for the Outgames, offering a myriad of services to participants and visitors, including activities, shows, events, and information booths. The Marathon, which will also pass through the Gay Village, will finish at this site.

2. The Olympic Park Aquatic Facilities

Swimming and Synchonised Swimming, as well as the Outsplash Show, will be held at the Stadium’s aquatic facilities, which were constructed to meet Olympic standards, and are located in the Sport Centre at the base of the tower. The Centre is regularly used by Canadian athletes and medalists.

In the summer 2005, Montréal hosted the XI FINA World Championships. The Montréal 2005 organisers not only demonstrated their knowledge, skills and professionalism on the international stage, but also left a legacy of expertise from which Montréal 2006 continues to benefit, as it does from the invaluable support of Montreal's gay and lesbian aquatic club, À Contre Courant.

3. The Maurice-Richard Arena

The Maurice-Richard Arena will host five days of competitions and the finals for Figure Skating during the Outgames. For the first time in history, professional figure skaters can take part in the competitions. The closing Showcase gala is sure to thrill and amaze spectators.

4. The Pierre-Charbonneau Centre

Three competitions will be held at the Pierre-Charbonneau Centre. Powerlifting and Aerobics competitions will be held successively in the palestra, which will be specially arranged for the occasion. Dancesport will be held in the large gymnasium where almost 2000 spectators can attend the different events of this crowd-pleasing discipline. The director selected for this event is the organiser of La Classique du Québec, an internationally renowned Dancesport event.

Sing out strong at the Outgames with eminent artistic directors.

Do you love to sing but are not part of a choir? Is your choir unable to attend the Outgames as a group? No problem! The Outgames have something just for you. You may register as an individual for one of the Outgames’ three international choruses. These choruses will be composed of individual voices from around the world. Singers in these men’s, women’s and mixed choruses will enjoy 10 hours of workshops and rehearsals with invited artistic directors. They will have the opportunity to perform during a special evening show to mark the close of the Choral Festival as well as on the outdoor stage at the Rendez-Vous Square, the central meeting place for participants and visitors during the Outgames.

Montréal 2006 is proud to announce that Ms. Andrée Dagenais and Mr. John Dawkins will be joining the Choral Festival as musical directors. A third musical director will be announced very soon…

Andrée Dagenais
Andrée Dagenais is an assistant professor at the Brandon University School of Music. Ms. Dagenais holds a doctorate in choral conducting from the University of Iowa and a master’s degree from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. She currently teaches at Université de Montréal and has taught previously at Queen’s University, the University of Saskatchewan and McGill University. She directs the Brandon University Chorus, which, under her direction, was honoured at the Canadian Music Festival in 2000 and 2001. In 2003, she founded the Brandon University Women’s Voices, with which she has presented concerts in Canada and abroad. Ms. Dagenais teaches choral conducting each summer in Québec. She has given numerous workshops on choral singing in North America, South America and in Europe.

John Dawkins

Born in Brighton, UK, John Dawkins completed his studies at Reading University in England, where he specialised in piano and in choral and orchestral conducting. In 1988, he left England for Paris and in 1991, became assistant director of the Chœur d’hommes François Legrand. Since then, he has continued to make his mark in the realm of choral and orchestral conducting. In 1996, he was named musical and artistic director of the Melo'Men, an international gay men’s chorus from Paris, touring with the chorus abroad as well as offering numerous performances in France. In 2000, his work was awarded the first prize in the Coup de chœurs contest, organised at Île-de-France. In 2002, he was named musical director and conductor of the Rainbow Symphony Orchestra. In 2003, he founded the Borromée vocal ensemble. The same year, he directed the Mélo’men for performances at the Lido in Paris, at the Palais des Congrès and at French National Assembly. Since 2005, he has been a professor of English lyric diction for the Le jeune chœur de Paris (the Paris Youth Chorus). His work as a conductor and musical director takes him regularly to countries around the world such as Germany, Austria, Canada, Great Britain, Ireland, Italy, Switzerland and the United States. John Dawkins is equally known and respected as an accompanying pianist and as a composer.

Wow,

Is that designed to end all conversations?

If Tomski is alive and well, perhaps he should be answering some questions.

After that posting though, he will say that he cannot remember any unanswered questions because he was caught up in that lengthy list of, well, lists!

Isn't it rich (also a bit ironic), that Travelpat would suggest a smear campaign against Monteal, yet TOMSKI (a paid Outgames staff member) 'accidently' posted his never-ending newsletter to the Gay Games info thread - before Jim moved it to the proper thread?

The preliminary program for the Outgames' International GLBT rights conference has been released and it truly is an impressive program, that hopefully will help advance the cause of GLBT rights world wide. Some of the confirmed names of people involved are mind boggling ranging from Supreme Court justices, to various members of parliaments, to Human Rights Commissioners, to UN officials, to religious leaders, to dozens of other officals and rights activists from every corner of the globe.
http://www.montreal2006.org/Doc/Conference...ogramme2006.pdf

And related to that conference the Outgames has announced this morning that the Declaration of Montreal coming out of that conference will be presented at the opening cerremonies by Mark Tewksbury and Martina Navratilova, both of whom are also taking part in the actual conference. That press release is here.

the Montréal games got a little "promotion" on the popular show "Tout le monde en parle" when Richard Garneau (who has covered Olympic games for 40 years) was a guest.

They mentioned the gay games, how it was going to be popular, and how big names like Martina Navratilova and Mark Tewksbury were going to be part of it.

From everything i've been hearing (all positive), it should be a great summer for gay games in Montréal.

Just a quick point of clarification - there is only one Gay Games in 2006, Chicago Gay Games VII, July 15-22.

The Eighth Quadrennial Gay Games will be in Cologne, Germany, in 2010.

Martina Navratilova and Mark Tewksbury are expected to be at the Human Rights Conference and Rendez Vous First World OutGames in Montreal.

i apologize.. but i think everyone knew what i was talking about.

I don't know about the big fight everyone had over "gay/out games" and don't really care to be honest.

The point i was trying to make is just that the games (however you want to call them) in Montréal are getting a lot of positive feedback right now, and if i'm not mistaken they will also get lots of tv coverage. All this being a good thing for everyone i would think.

As the days dwindle down toward the real Gay Games and the fiasco in Montreal, Leph75 reminds me of why I hate the Greedhead Junta and their corrupt project. I am currently taking the long view, however, and it has become clear that perhaps Montreal constitutes a useful vortex into which all the evils of gay ghetto culture will dive and be flushed away. At least we won't be seduced into considering another Montreal-like bid from the circuit party and tourisme greedheads, no matter how many hundreds of millions of reasons are dancing in their eyes. Oh, I know they will be back hovering on the edges, Gollum-like, waiting for another chance to grab the Ring, but with deja vu, we'll realize we've been there and been done by that before.

I'm hoping, Leph75, that you will realize you're on the wrong side - or if not, have a nice swirl down the porcelain goddess!!

i'm not on any side, as i simply don't care.

There's going to be games in Montréal this summer, and it should be very popular. That's it.

I'm still waffling and have not registered yet for the Outgames. I can't decide whether to play softball or volleyball. I can only play part time because of some work obligations I'll have while in Montreal, so I'm trying to decide between being a spare player for my softball team or an extra player for one of the Toronto volleyball teams that is going.

I think I'm leaning towards volleyball though, because it appeals to me that there is a more international field, with players from 25 countries having already registered in that sport, as compared to just seven countries for softball. I really like the idea of playing teams from all over the place, as for me it was always more fun in Sydney - at the last Gay Games - when we played against teams from places that you would not normally have the opportunity to play against. So it was more fun to play teams from Germany, Norway and Australia rather than just the same Canadian and/or American teams that we always play against in regular tournaments here year after year. So volleyball seems to be the more international of the two sports, (based on the latest stats from Montreal, that can be found at the link below), so that is why I'm leaning that way.

http://www.montreal2006.org/En_Ville.aspx#d30

I did quick check from that link to see which disciplines were attracting the most international fields. Of course the most diverse is the major GLBT Rights conference, that is such an important part of the legacy of the Outgames, if not the most important, with 90 countries, including 20 African nations, represented in that part of the Outgames.

On the sports side of things these seem to be the sports with the most diverse international fields.

Volleyball - 25 countries
Track - 32
Marathon - 33
Tennis - 28
Swimming - 29
Soccer - 28 - including from eight different African nations

Lots of other sports with between 10-25 countries represented too.

If you are active in a sport, live in the States or Canada and have never have been to a Gay Games before and are not yet registered for either the Gay Games or Outgames, I strongly encourage you to register for one or the other. The incredible sense of community that you will be a part of, when meeting people from every corner of the globe, either at your sports venue, at the Opening or Closing Ceremonies or anywhere else you might bump into people during the week, is truly an experience that will you will never forget. And with the next Outgames and Gay Games both in Europe, you'll be waiting at least 7 years before you get another opportunity like this at an event on this continent. So if you do have the opportunity to participate in one or the other, or even just to go as a spectator, I strongly encourange you to do so. You'll have an incredible time.

Pat, nice to have a SPORTs post from you. I urge you to, if not register in your softball or volley ball, book a hotel. I also am telling everyone, that if they can, they should go to either Chicago or Montreal.

I myself am registered in a sport I've will have taken for 6 months, but what the hey?"

Team Vancouver has a uniform design! We're coming.

The March 14 issue of The Advocate has a 'Preview' article on 'How Chicago's Gay Games and Montreal's Outgames are training hard to avoid past disasters' They have 3 featured athlete profiles. One athlete going to Montreal, one to Chicago and one to both . The 'Chicago' athlete is featured on the cover and indeed has a unique and amazing story. He's a triathlete that used to be 100 pounds overweight, conquered horrible family problems..etc. OH, and he is SMOKIN' HOT!
The athlete going to both Gay Games and Montreal event is from Toronto, and the Outgames athlete who is going to Montreal is a swimmer from the UK. Be sure to read the reason she gave for choosing Montreal - it's ironic!

Holy Crap, we are actually talking sports here in this thread eek! ....WOW......nice to see. biggrin.gif

I myself just registered for swimming.....and was happy to see such a huge international Contingent already registered for the swim competition.

Chuck, hope to able to see you compete there, although I am not in the Martial Arts Competition, I will certainly try and wander over there to check things out.

Can I ask a really dumb question here. Montreal, Chicago and Cologne have a presence on the web, but Copenhagen seems to be very noticeable by its absence. Am I just using the wrong query in my Google search or do they not have any information yet.

Us poor guys from "Down Under" need to plan well ahead to travel to the bottom of the world for these sorts of events and a web site with basic details (like dates) is always a good thing. biggrin.gif
softballstud
jbal -- You haven't seen much about Copenhagen because it's a 'crap shoot' - big risk. It's ironic that you have NOT seen or heard more, as that party will come BEFORE the real Gay Games. Go with the 'sure thing' -- save your time and bucks for THE Gay Games...Cologne. You won't regret it.

:-)
Travelpat
Hey jbal and softballstud. Montreal and Chicago obviously have their websites up with the events only months away. Cologne - who for a couple of years now had a formal bidding organization - that included a (very good) bid website, I presume they just transitioned that site for the event, now that the FGG has deservedly awarded the 2010 Gay Games to them.

We all know it was a very different story with Copenhagen. They stepped up after Berlin and Sao Paulo withdrew, and based on their previous experience of hosting a successful multisport Eurogames, and the commitment of the local officials and especially the many dedicated members of the local GLBT sport organization - Pan Idraet - they were able to quickly reach a preliminary agreement with GLISA for 2009. As we all know that was announced at GLISA's inaugural conference in early September. That decision and all the history of how that came about has been discussed at length on this board and elsewhere. Since that time they have been working diligently on finalizing all the details of that agreement and today have announced a deal confirming the partnership between Copenhagen and GLISA for the delivery of 2nd World Outgames 2009.

And if you were wondering about the dates jbal, it is August 1-8,2009. I presume a website will appear soon. Here is the press release with the good news for 2009 that came out of Denmark this morning!

http://www.glisa.org/Media/3March2006.htm

So GLISA's progress continues to be right on track, as in the past few months they have initiated the formation of both the North American and Asia/Pacific regional Gay and Lesbian Sport Federations. Their membership base has continued to grow, the Montreal Games are on track to be an overwhelming success and now the deal is sealed for Copenhagen in 2009. Expect announcements confirming regional Outgames in coming years too, to complement the once every four year major international Outgames.

And to be fair, at the same time it looks like Chicago is on track for a great event and the FGG have a strong partner in Cologne for 2010. Things are looking better than ever for the ever expanding international GLBT sport world. What a great time to be a gay jock!
