I vaguely remember this event. Bobby Riggs, I think, was fully capable of that kind of vulgar hustle like Pete Rose and others of that era. Billy Jean King, on the other hand, was the most successful female tennis player of that era and fully capable to beating Riggs. But, Riggs could have simply refused to train sufficiently to gain the result he was planning. Back then, American women were dismissed a lot more than now by men, a sort of polite discrimination. Women were never expected to be able to take on men successfully in sports. I guess PGA golf and poker are the only sports in which women are beginning to compete equally with men. But, tennis remains strictly segregated by sex, except in the case of mixed doubles. Can you think of any current female tennis star today capable of beating a 55 year old former male tennis star? I don't think so.
