Can't believe someone hasn't started a thread about this wacko astro-nut. I love the defense attorneys on TV who are saying this is a simple assault and that the knife, wig and money in her car do nothing to prove this loon's intent to kidnap, injure or even kill her victim.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17023767/

Much like the debate in the Dateline To Catch a Predator thread where some people say these people didn't actually do anything, all the stuff in her car and the fact that she drove hours to confront her victim shows she had real intent to harm this woman.
UCLAfan
I think she was just in the middle of a nervous breakdown and we got to see it in public, for our own amusement. If she is such an "astro-nut", as you put it, GTF, you imply your acknowledgment that she is mentally unbalanced and therefore potentially not responsible for her own actions. To me, it seems as though she is quite the loon, who was broken up by her divorce. Sadly, her breakdown just occurred in public for all of us to see.

Just because I jokingly use terms like astro-nut and loon doesn't mean I necessarily believe she is mentally ill and therefore not responsible for her actions. Sounds to me more like she was just another person who was in love with someone who loved someone else and she wasn't having any of it.
jaragonus
The fact that she drove non stop wearing a diaper explains a lot about her mental state.
George Twins fan
Oh she just didn't want to stop at a rest area. wink.gif tongue.gif
UCLAfan
Exactly, GTF! Have you tried stopping along a rest stop lately? *SHIVER* blink.gif I don't think anyone can fault her for that. It's the rest of the the assorted instruments that she had with her.

Whats amazing to me was the family's(hers) initial response last night on Larry King. They said they had no idea, and this wasn't her, news to them, and on and on and on....
George Twins fan
What is amazing about that? Did you expect they'd get on Larry King and say "Why yes Larry we were well aware she was going to put on a diaper, drive 1000 miles and spray some woman with pepper spray while carrying a wig and a knife in the car"?

Wasn't she trying to catch the other woman before she got on a plane, or got off a plane and drove away, or something?
fantomas
Don't forget the steel mallet (!) and the pellet gun! All this drama over a 41-year-old piece of ASS-stronaut! biggrin.gif

Hey, what's wrong with rest stops? Why, sometimes I go there even when I don't have to use the facilities! biggrin.gif

Oh my word! You use the facilities alright, MB. You just don't use them the way they're supposedly intended. laugh.gif

Yes, this poor woman was sane as a rabid dog. She was merely mentally unstable. Imagine her driving the space shuttle back to earth.

Potential quote upcoming from Lisa Nowak: "Damn the torpedoes, asteroids, and space junk! Full speed ahead! I have an astronaut to conquer."

I dunno....he's pretty hot..... smile.gif

Did you guys read she had the diapers because ALL astronauts wear them during launch and re-entry? Umm, remind me to cross that job off my list.
hockeyTom
George, I guess I was thinking the family might have said something like, we knew she was having some problem with....fill in the blank, but nothing like that! laugh.gif
Lksimcoe
This lady is a poster child for PMS. Can you imagine her in the shuttle, when one of her "episodes" hit??

Lordy, she'd land the shuttle in Times Square if she could.
jaragonus
The object of her lust is an attractive guy.
millerbeach
Now, I've had worse, but he isn't exactly someone whom I'd go over the moon for! Or, for that matter, do hard time in prison for attempted murder. Women....can't live with 'em and you can't live with 'em! That's why I like men...one mood, all the damn time!
Maddog
Meh! He looks like Tony Shaloub. I'm not wearing diapers for Tony Shaloub! ohmy.gif

Okay. So you're launching into space in a modified soup can at a kazillion
miles per hour, with a good chance of becoming fertilizer on venus or something.

Or you're hurtling towards earth and if the pilot farts, you'll skip off the atmosphere
and end up circling Alpha Centauri.

I'd need diapers as well. Big Honking ones. Cuz I know I'd fill them in a heartbeat.

Well NASA has fired the Space Cadet.

Can't wait for the lawsuits. rolleyes.gif

I was listening to this story on the internet (KFI out of Los Angeles) and I heard something that struck me as rather odd. The fact that Lisa Nowak did indeed have a sexual relationship with William Oefelein, the man in the middle. So, upon reading the emails that she had obtained, of course she flew into a jealous rage at Ms. Shipman. After reading another thread about a cheating boyfriend, I think we can have some more sympathy for Nowak now.

What is more interesting is that under the UCMJ (Uniformed Code of Military Justice), both Nowak and Oefelein face criminal charges of committing adultery, which is specifically forbidden. Yes, there is justice in this case and it's not necessarily coming down on just Nowak.

I don't see her as a kook after all. I see her as a jealous lover who was going to be dumped and reacted very vindictively!

WARNING:
Tell all your heterosexual mates not to date any woman from the Clear Lake area of Houston.
Besides Lisa Nowak, we have a couple of Texas Department of Corrections graduates - Andrea Yates (drowned her 5 kids) & Clara Harris (ran over her cheating husband several times in their Mercedes) were also from Clear Lake.

Also, the Cheerleader Mom of a few years back also lived in Clear Lake. She was the one who tried to kill the mother of her daughter's cheerleading rival...

Ah, gotta love Texas!! smile.gif

Some of the late night talk show jokes:

"I thought the only space traveler who wore a wig and an adult diaper was William Shatner." --David Letterman

"When she was arrested, she was carrying a wig, a steel mallet, some duct tape, and a knife.
Or as OJ calls it, an overnight bag." --Jay Leno

"It turns out the female astronaut was trying to kidnap the other woman because they're both in love with the same astronaut. The male astronaut was disappointed the female astronaut was arrested and said, 'I was hoping to get some tang.'" --Conan O'Brien

"It turns out the female astronaut was trying to kidnap the other woman because they're both in love with the same astronaut. The male astronaut was disappointed the female astronaut was arrested and said, 'I was hoping to get some tang.'" --Conan O'Brien

"She drove 900 miles in a diaper. That’s pretty amazing. Britney Spears can’t even make it around the block in her underpants." --David Letterman

"This female astronaut ... tried to kidnap and murder another NASA engineer, who was her romantic rival. She put on a wig and attacked the other woman with pepper spray and a BB gun, after driving 900 miles from Houston to Orlando, Florida, in diapers, so she wouldn't have to stop to pee. She drove 900 miles wearing diapers, thus breaking the old record set by Larry King." --Jay Leno

"How about that story, you know the NASA astronaut? When they caught her, she was wearing a wig and an adult diaper. There was a lot of confusion, because originally, authorities thought she was Elton John." --David Letterman

it's easy to hide the warning signs of a breakdown from those closest to us

I've done it at least twice in my life, if not more-my last breakdown was in October

as someone who is bipolar, it would be easy to get on my high horse and say I want people to be more sensitive to those of us with mental illnesses and get all pissy over loon comments but hell, I use them myself

I can see how this situation came into being-she was obviously having problems; she may or may not have recognized that she was having problems; if she did, she knew that seeing a doctor or professional would have led to her being removed from the astronaut program but I don't think that she realized she was having problems

I know when I'm not feeling well because it's happened before but this may have been the first time for her

sometimes what is truly irrational to most comes across as very rational to those with mental illness

that's the nature of the disease
