Here's what Omar Vizquel had to say today in the New York Times, concerning his Japanese teammate Kazuhito Tadano.
Tadano was in a gay porno a couple years ago.

QUOTE

\"I don't know of anyone in the clubhouse who's uncomfortable with Kaz. A lot of people don't understand the magnitude of the gay community, how it's becoming more and more accepted, what with same-sex marriage and people revealing their preferences in public.

\"Kaz says he's not gay, and we take him at his word. But even if he were, it wouldn't bother me. There are a lot more things in the world to worry about than whether a guy's gay or not.

\"The gay world isn't a secret anymore. Remember Billy Bean?'' Vizquel said in reference to the former major league outfielder who played from 1987 to 1995. \"He came out a few years ago after he retired to say he is gay. He said he was afraid to admit it when he was playing because of the negative reaction it might cause. But I think there are a certain amount of players in baseball - and other sports - who are gay, but don't want to admit it. I think we're getting closer to the day when they will, and no one will really care that much.\"

Wow, this is really incredibly positive. Great piece of news to read upon waking up.
Munson Man
I read this in this morning's Times as well, and was going to post it here, but I see others have already done so. The quote, and the wonderfully supportive nature of the whole article, were really quite exhilarating. Kudos to Omar Vizquel for being so articulate......

Eric Wedge, the Indians' manager, echoing reporters who cover the team, said there seemed to be few harsh words, if any, from fans.
I would think that this is because Tadano has a very low profile and started the season in the minors. Now if, oh, a certain heterosexual catcher/first baseman were found to be in a gay porn video.... eek!

Omar Vizquel is truly a first-class human being.
Mariner Duck Guy
I met Omar when he was playing in Seattle. He was my favorite Mariner at the time. The magic man. He was very nice and has that beautiful smile. Very classy of Omar to support Kaz.

Well said, MDB....Vizquel has always conducted himself with the utmost class throughout his distinguished career (which he deserves far more credit for, particularly for his defensive excellence, if you ask me) but his comments in the NYT article speak volumes about his character and level of dignity....we can only hope that his expectation that "we're getting closer to the day that they will (come out publicly), and no one will really care that much" becomes a reality in the near future.

Kudos to Omar along with Indians GM Mark Shapiro for being so supportive of both Tadano, in particular, and the gay community as a whole....I'm sure there are a LOT of athletes and team execs who could learn a thing or two from the classiness personified by these two professionals.
