Did any of you watch AMERICAN EXPERIENCE on PBS last night? It was about the People's temple and Jim Jones. It was gripping stuff. Jim Jones had total control over the members. Most of the members were African American females including many elderly people. Jones was having sex with most of the men in the cult. He would casually aproach a male member of the cult and ask him if he wanted to be f**ked up the ass. The People's temple seemed to be too good to be true. They claimed to mix socialist ideals with Christianity. Cults are a real danger in this world. Scary stuff. mad.gif

Yes, I watched it last night. Interesting how so many people were searching for something more in their lives and so easiy bought into Jone's party line. Was amazed there were so many seniors in the cult. I also wasn't aware that Jones was into the whole "healing" scam, even costuming his secretary as a senior citizen in a wheel chair and the healing her and seeing her running around in the church. Kind of sad really.

I was in 8th grade when this horrible tragedy happened, and I remembered many aspects of it, but I hadn't recalled how much political power Jones had; he actually got Rosalyn Carter to campaign for Jimmy Carter in his church, and also got many of California's top Democrats to pay him some fealty, in part because the positive aspects of his church were so socially progressive. The utter tragedy is that alongside this progressiveness were so many cruel, paranoid, destructive aspects, which culminated in the horrific mass suicide and the killings of Congressman Ryan, the camera people, and others at the airfield. You'd have thought people could have seen how totally crazy he was, but I'm convinced after the last six years that many people are willing to ignore reality completely if they're under enough of a spell. Koolaid drinkers indeed, it's very sad to say.

I'm glad to see you mention the secretary made up to look like an ill senior citizen. Jone's followers really believed that the woman had been healed. They were that taken in by his lies. Ernest Angley is another cultist who claims to heal the sick. Do any of you out there remember Angley's show? He would tell people to put their hands against the television screen. It would be hilarious if it weren't so pathetic.

Koolaid drinkers indeed, it's very sad to say. I had forgotten how much political influence was wielded by Jim Jones. Surely someone realized how he was abusing members of his cult. The daughter of the late Congressman Ryan was in a cult herself. She joined the Bhagwan Rajneesh cult. That cult was involved in infecting a salad bar with the salmonella bacteria. I don't know if she still subscribes to the cult's beliefs or has come to her senses.

I don't know what I did but Fantomas and my post were run together.

I saw this when it was in theaters last year. Such a harrowing story. I can't believe how much audio and video tapes have been preserved.

I wish they had explained why those 80 some odd-followers (including most of his children) were away from the compound when the shit hit the fan.
