Full Version: Shear Genius

I thought "Top Design" had killed my craving for Bravo reality shows, but I was pleased to find that "Shear Genius" is every bit as enjoyable as "Project Runway" and "Top Chef" (although "Project Runway" is still my favorite.) The idea of a show built around a weekly hairdressing competition struck me as irresistibly amusing, and so far, the show has more than lived up to its potential. The judges are a little stiff, however.

Tabatha is my favorite contestant so far, and she's doing remarkably well after a bad start in the first episode. I also liked Jim, but he was sent home last night — and was extremely gracious about it.

No clear-cut villain has emerged so far, but I'm sure someone will before long.

is anyone else hooked on this show?

I am quickly becoming addicted to it myself. If you ask me Bravo is the new LOGO!!

I think this show is OK but certainly far from great. It's a step behind even Top Design. I tend to like most of the Bravo reality shows and this one may get better, but Jaclyn Smith was a horrendous choice as host. First of all, she is almost completely edited, and the looping and voiceovers suggest that she did little right when the show was being taped. To top it off, many of the stylists are not very good. In several of the other reality shows on Bravo, you knew from the beginning that you were seeing top-notch designers or chefs, but in this series, there are several bad ones. My gawd, when they were asked to dye those wigs blonde, several of them had no idea what to do. I'm no hair genius but it seems like even a decent stylist should know how to do that.

how DARE you say anything bad about Jaclyn Smith on this board!?! i actually like this better than Top Design already. Although that queeny guy host is driving me nuts.

at the risk of sounding like i know too much about the industry, i swear i'm totally a butch jock, in most high end salons, color is done by colorists, not the folks doing the cutting. so it is not surprising to me that many of the stylists on the show haven't done color since school.

it's also fun that the words "hair show" are spoken aloud on every episode.

I don't have any major objections to the "queeny guy host" (I think his name is Rene), but he has a plastic Ken-doll look that is rather off-putting. As for Jaclyn Smith's performance as host, I agree she isn't doing the greatest job. But who watches these shows for the hosts?

I think the point of the show is to weed out the rank amateurs and wannabe hairdresses from the true professionals — at least I would hope so.

I don't take the show too seriously, and I won't be on the edge of my seat for the finals like I was with "Top Chef" and "Project Runway." But it's much more entertaining than I thought it would be — and it sure beats the hell out of "Top Design."

Rene has a nice @$$. laugh.gif

It's funny and campy. I really didn't expect to enjoy it, but it's silly.
