There were one or two technical glitches, and Cyd's voice came across as louder than Jim's. As for the content, well, let me know when you talk about sports.
Cyd at Outsports
Thanks Joe. Yeah, we know of some glitches. There is one I don't think we'll be able to get around because we're not in the same studio. But, the volume issue should be doable.

I'd love to know what you mean about talking sports. Do you mean we should just talk about what happens on the field or court or ice? To me, the entire podcast was about sports and the issues surrounding it. Who's winning the NL East - the guys on Philly talk radio can tell you that better. smile.gif

Who knew Cyd dated Danny Pintauro from Who's the Boss? I tried to call in when that one caller was amazed that Danny had a girlfriend and was engaged and Cyd said they met when they were bothat Stanford and had girlfriends. The guy was shocked that Danny had a girlfriend but not shocked that Cyd did? Come on now!

And I tried to call during the sports quiz. I so would have won a DVD Gift Pack!

It was not at all about sports. It was about the King of the Hardwood, and the comfort level of athletes and other men from other nations in posing nude/wearing Speedos, and whether some of the discomfort from Americans is due to homophobia, and how it's more gay people than straight people who complain about Outsports having photos of hot guys, and whether it's because of their internalized issues.

I don't know if this is the thread to re-hash the whole issue of what Outsports is, or what it's perceived to be, or what it should be, and so on. I'm just saying that while I'm not immune to the allure of the King of the Hardwod, talk about actual sports interests me more than talk about hot jocks.
Cyd at Outsports
Athletes and their bodies are a big reason why sports have become a cornerstone of society. I personally think discussions about the culture that surrounds them and how they interact with it differently is a completely pertinent sports conversation. Using sports as a catalyst to talk about issues in society is what Outsports has always been. If we didn't use sports to talk about issues of sexuality, we'd be just another sports-news site.

With that said, I do understand some of what you're saying, and future podcasts will revolve more around athletes and what's happening in sports. But please do forgive me if I continue to gush over Jeremy Bloom. laugh.gif

Shoot... I just typed my response and accidentally deleted it. mad.gif Anyhoo, I think my points were these:

Audio was off (Cyd much louder than Jim). Maybe a short musical intro would be good?

I would suggest some structure to the show, and letting people know at the top what the topics of discussion are (sort-of like PTI's list of topics). You don't want people to stop listening just because they're not interested in in a particular segment. For example, "Coming up in today's show, the NBA playoffs and the impact of John Amaechi's coming out. But next: shorts or Speedos? What are dudes wearing to the beach this season?" wink.gif tongue.gif

As a debut podcast, I thought it was good, although a lot of the discussion was predictable (but only because I'm somewhat familiar with Jim & Cyd's opinions on certain things--I knew, for example, that Sports Illustrated swimsuit models, Peyton Manning and the Pats would be mentioned rolleyes.gif ). For an Outsports newbie it might have all been refreshingly new.

The podcast is a great way of interacting with the online Outsports community. It might be nice to feature some members as guests in future podcasts (I would vote for appearances by Jim Allen, JiP and George_Tf). And perhaps people could e-mail questions and you could answer them on an occassional basis.

And I do agree with JiP. Some sports sports discussion should be mandatory. David Beckham's cologne, stealing jockstraps and anything to do with He Who Shall Not Be Named doesn't count.

Oh sorry my bad! I thought this was a podcast of Cyd's appearance on Sirius last night. So my post earlier in this thread makes zero sense whatsoever! D'oh! I'll have to listen to the podacst so I can find other thinsg to make fun of Beavis and Butthead about!

I made a conscious decision to NOT mention Peyton or the Pats ... but then Cyd brings them up anyway. tongue.gif

Other points:

--Yes, we will work on getting my sound level up to snuff.

--Having guests is a great idea, and we will tap some of you.

--Part of this is to try and reach out to people who aren't as familiar with Outsports as you all are (the Podacast is available on ITunes). We picked Sex and Sports as Topic 1 as a way to get people to listen. "A discussion of the NHL playoffs" would have had a much smaller audience. The show will endeavor to be a mix of sports and topics that are sports-related; the first one was definitely sports-related despite its lack of pure onfield talk.

--We discussed music but then you need to get copyright clearance, which can be a hassle and we wanted to start the process. Anyone know of a place that has public domain tunes? Or maybe you all can record the Eagles Fight Song for us!

I think some are being a little harsh a little too soon....

Was a perfect first initial time expected?

Whatever happened to a learning curve?

I mean, was our first times having sex, driving, playing a new sport perfect?

I applaud the guys for bringing a new means of media to Outsports. They used sound judgment in choosing the topic for their first podcast. In order to get buts in the seats and ears listening, you need an audience- so kudos for bringing 1) a topic we were familiar with-KOTH, 2) a topic that crosses all aspects of your audience- too specific a sport immediately isolates audience potential, and 3) making it happen in the first place.

Other areas of topic suggestions:
Mens health- what to do when starting a new sport
New Sports for Dummies segments- bring the experts in various sports (esp from the site) to give a lowdown for the guy/gal who wants to impress a new guy/gal that likes a sport he/she isn't familiar with
Are You Smarter than our Outsporter? segment- sports knowledge questions- a member invited to compete with one of you guys or an invited Outsports member in knowledge

I dunno- just some ideas- Thanks once again for this site and the positivity that you bring. Keep up the work, gents.
Cyd at Outsports
This is ALL great feedback - technical issues, topics, guests. Some of it we've thought of, some of it we hadn't. So thank you all - we really appreciate you listening and taking the time to help us improve it! Keep it coming.
curtj
Congrats, Guys! It's great to see Outsports evolve. I hope this helps you reach an even bigger audience.

Maybe on the next podcast you can explain why you both have kitty avatars.

That was fun though Cyd's hatred of Brady Quinn seems a little odd. Some guests to discuss their playoff predictions, preseason football polls, Wimbledon and US Open previews, discuss All Star and Hall of Fame selections, weekly picks during the NFL season, etc.

An aside to Cyd-we don't want to hear about your flag football team! tongue.gif tongue.gif tongue.gif

I don't hate Brady Quinn. I'm just VERY underwhelmed by him.

Oh, you'll hear about my football team. And you'll like it too, my pretty. Mwahahahahahaha!
Maddog
Long time listener, first time caller.

I thought you guys did fine for an off-the-cuff debut. You kinda told us things we already knew based on your posts but that works too. Maybe a little more script next time but whatever you do, don't miss a week. Keep a podcast coming every week regardless of preparation. It'll be that rhythm that's makes it work. Jim has a great radio voice and Cyd, yours is good too. wink.gif

And Cyd between you and me, here in Palm Springs, I stretch after my swim too although I recently got a note from neighbors asking me to take the speedo off first... Yeah, I know but thats what you get when you move to Warm Sands... sigh...

No...I don't think his name was even mentioned.
Chill-Trick
He wasn't mentioned? Didn't he create the whole thing?
Maddog
I have to agree Jim and Cyd. A MAJOR oversight not mentioning and thanking MDG. sad.gif
Cyd at Outsports
We COMPLETELY agree and will try to make good on it!!
Jim at Outsports
We invited him on today and he can't make it but we will thank him. The oversight was not intentional; once the podcast started you get so focused on what you're going to say next that certain things just slip your mind. We love the work MDG has done with KOTH.
Joe in Philly
How long was that podcast, anyway? I didn't take note. Is it going to be a similar length each time? I don't often listen to podcasts though they're all over the place. I'm wondering how long they generally run. (It occurs to me that the longer they are, the more subjects you can include -- but also, for whatever reasons, that might cut down on the number of people who listen to it.)
Jim at Outsports
They will be 15-20 minutes. We will announce the topics at the top so people get a sense of what we'll be discussuing.
Cyd at Outsports
Episode 2 is up and running.

Outsports podcast

We took some of your comments, and we will be incorporating more in the coming weeks. Thanks!

nice work.....

and its ok to watch a sport when it's on Versus smile.gif ....really it is.
Joe in Philly
Now that's what I am looking for -- a mixture of lots of different subjects.
buccoman
I realy enjoy the podcasts, guys, so I hope you keep doing them. I listen to ESPN radio all the time but I've never heard the "gay equivalent," which apparently exists on satellite radio?....Anyway, it's a revelation to hear sports talk with the occasional reference to a good looking/hot guy and other gay-themed sports topics. I wish this were on everyday!!

Is is possible to stream the current podcast on the internet, in addition to allowing the file to be downloaded? This would save some time (and stop the biting of the nails in eager anticipation of listening to the new podcast).
Cyd at Outsports
I'm looking into the streaming thing. Thanks for the email Larry! It is available through itunes - don't know if that helps. I'll figure it out. unsure.gif
Jim at Outsports
Podcast 3 is up, with our special guest -- Joe in Philly,

Take a listen and fire away!

Actually, you mentioned him when you said your loyalty to him is what occasionally brings you to the King of the Hardwood discussions.

As for discussing sports, I'm more in your realm although I can definitely appreciate the lookers. cool.gif

To clarify: my comment above is about the first podcast. Jim and Cyd thanked him in the second podcast. And I appeared on the third podcast.

I'm listening to podcast #3 as I type this (still haven't had time to listen to #2), enjoying the mellifluous tones of JiP. Although the conversation started with hot jocks it has mercifully moved to real sports: the NFL draft.

-----------

My one quibble might be the length of the podcast. 24 minutes is a long time to just sit there and listen (although admittedly I was listening, surfing Outsports and the Internet, and watching baseball, basketball and Grey's Anatomy all at the same time). I think 10-15 minutes per week would be sufficient.

Both Jim and Cyd have excellent radio voices.
phillyrunner
Nice debut on podcast #3 Joe. It's a good thing you didn't rant on your real pet peaves. smile.gif

By the way tell Brady Quinn that Camilla Parker Bowles is already taken. ohmy.gif
J eddie
When is Maddog's interview?!
Maddog
LOL...oh sweet Eddie. I don't think I'd be a good choice until the NFL season starts. Thanks though...lol. wub.gif

When I listened to the latest podcast last night the story about coach Hawkins' firing hadn't been put onto the site, so it was sort of like breaking news instead of a review of something we'd already read. I don't know if it was planned that way, but I think it would help keep the discussion fresher if you did this more often.
Enigma
Listening to the latest podcast and this may sound weird, but it's the first podcast I've ever heard haha.

I loved it, you guys have good chemistry and made for good radio. As for my thoughts... (keep in mind, this is the first podcast I've ever listened to)

- A musical intro would be nice

- When switching topics, it'd be cool if you had a soundbyte leading into it... for example, when talking about Barry Bonds, you can have a clip of some broadcaster sayin, "THERE IT IS... 742" or somethin like that... or like when talkin about the Kentucky Derby let's hear the final seconds of the call down the home stretch. Just adds some spice to it I think.

- Having a guest would be nice (which apparantly you have had during the first few shows)

That's all I can think of now. I really liked it though... great job!
Jim at Outsports
Enigma, those are great ideas but ...

We would need to get rights clearances to use any kind of music or play-by-play. This is not impossible but can be time-consuming and tedious to pursue. We are examing any public domain music that might work; any ideas on that welcome!

Thanks

Jim
Enigma
That's a valid point and one that I sure didn't consider. I just assume everything is fair game, similar to how I do hilites on my TV Sportscasts.

I could be way off base here, but don't you guys have a good relationship with ESPN? I mean, you guys have worked with them in the past on gay athletes... is it possible to talk with them and see if you can get permission to use ABC / ESPN type play x play clips on your podcast, when necessary, on the condition that you credit ABC / ESPN when doing so?
Enigma
Nice job with the podcast boys! Any upcoming interviews for future podcasts?
Cyd at Outsports
We just posted an interview with Front Runner author and Outsports contributor Patricia Nell Warren. Enjoy!
