Yeah, when I saw the headline of "gravely serious" I was thinking, "Hopefully today Falwell will be upgraded to just 'grave.'"
It might sound malicious but I have zero sympathy for anyone who preaches hate, distorts truth and gleefully preys on human fears the way he did.

Falwell Dead
Despite his horrible treatment of gays and his overwhelming bigotry and zealotry, he was still a human being who tried to follow his conscience.
True, he was flawed, but then so is everyone else.

Flawed is one thing. Wishing harm and death on another group of humans is beyond forgiveness.
Remember, this is a man who blamed gays for September 11.
This is a man who called Aids "Gods judgement against gays"
This is a man who advocated setting up detention camps for gays
This is a man who supported rolling back constituional protections for gays.
THis is a man who advocated removing EVERY child from a gay home.
He was not a Christian.
He was a bigot of the worst kind.
The only difference between Jerry Falwell and Adolf Hitler, is that Hitler got into power.
Do you REALLY think that if Jerry Falwell had gotten into power he'd have been any different?
But now, he has been judged. I'd like to say god have mercy on his soul, but I wouldn't mean it.
If there is a hell, Jerry Falwell deserves to be there. For 1 thousand times 1 thousand years.
And yes, the 10 commandments say to love thy neighbour, and my sentiments are probably a sin.
I'll take that chance.

I'm not going to feel bad for a man who mentally tortured gay people for 20 years. Bin Laden thought he was doing the right thing by flying planes in buildings, but that doesn't mean I'm going to feel bad when he dies (or died for all we know). Good riddance to bad rubbish.

Well, that was just a general thought, it wasn't directed at you.

But some of the news networks are mourning the man already, I just don't understand. Maybe they're just mourning the loss of their go to dose of Christian crazy. They have one less person to tell them that the fags and pro-choisers are responsible for the ills of the world.

Every news report I have heard up here remembers him as a Right Wing Conservative who exerted great influence on US polotics and then immediately mentions the Tinky Winky, his comments about gays & lesbians & feminists causing 9/11, his support of apartheid in South Africa and his opposition to Martin Lther King. Not exactly glowing reviews for a Christian leader.
Can honestly say I'm sorry that he has left this earth, but I'd extend my sympathies to his family. Wonder what Pat Robertson has to say, surely God has talked to him directly.

QUOTE
Falwell wanted 20 more years
One week before his death, Falwell told CNN's Christiane Amanpour he needed at least 20 more years to accomplish his vision for Liberty University.
Falwell told the story of Hezekiah, who in the Bible asked to live for 15 more years.
"I'm praying the same prayer with an option to renew," Falwell said.
God's answer came at 12.40 pm, 15 May 2007 (he apologised for the delay in responding as he had been held up by more pressing concerns like, oooo, lemme see, starving kids in Africa, his feuding children in the middle east).

Falwell was not a Christian leader, even though he founded a "church." He was a politician, pure and simple, and was able to gain political power, influence and the resulting cash only by lying, slandering and attacking innocent people, who happened to be his neighbors. I am not glad he is dead, but only glad that there is a void in the leadership of the anti-gay hate movement that, with any luck, will never be filled.
It's funny, I have tried to feel sorry for his friends and family members, but I can't even work up sympathy for them. I see nothing that the man ever contributed to society, and simply cannot mourn his death.
May he become a footnote in the national history - no more important than, say Aaron Burr.

I wish they wouldnt call him a Christian leader.
He was not a Christian, and the sheep that followed him weren't either.
They, and he, represent the worst kind of intolerant, divisive, hateful, and ignorant American. They have NOTHING in common with the teachings of Jesus. They are the ENEMY of love.
There are millions of these people, I know. An army of them. And their general just checked out.

Jerry Falwell repelled more people away from God then he brought to know God. That is the tragedy here.
I can say that I hope he suffered but I feel "wrong" in stating that. I want to know that he is burning in that lake of fire that he teased us with all of these years. I still feel like I don't have the right to feel that way about someone else no matter what they do. I hope I am not being a victim. Maybe I have the spirituality that he never knew. Maybe not. Who knows?
I remember how pissed I was when he was on Larry King calling Bill Clinton a reprobate and a pervert. All I could think of was what a hypocrite this guy is. There he is with his neck hanging out of his shirt collar, obviously from obesity and overeating and he is trashing Clinton while he and his family were no doubt having the most trying times. Gluttony and Lust, are they not the same in Gods eyes?
I feel sorry for humans who think its their job to do Gods work in their own self centered way.
Wherever he is maybe he will send a message from the other side waving a white flag and declare his need for forgiveness of all of his iniquities towards the human race.

How many gay teens were disowned by their families because of Falwell's vitriole? How many committed suicide? How many were gay bashed?
This man may have done some good, charitable work. But he's just another televangelist who got rich by using fear to get gullible people to donate their hard-earned money so that he could live a life of opulance. He made gays and gay marriage, abortion and feminists into "Bogey Men" and helped turn the Republican party into fear-mongering entity it is today.
And shame on the media coverage of this. His blaming gays and feminists and abortion for Katrina, 9/11 and other tragedies were merely glossed over. And I actually saw Joe Scarborough and Pat Buchanan on Tucker Carlson's show yesterday actually try to justify these comments as if Falwell had a great sense of humor and didn't really mean all the things he said and that most of his followers were probably just rolling their eyes. No you idiots, he used tragedies like Katrina and 9/11 to raise even more money.
Well allow me to lay some blame. Without Falwell and his influence, we wouldn't have the current idiot in chief in the White House. We wouldn't be in this quagmire in Iraq. So gays are to blame for the thousand dead from the 9/11 attacks and Katrina? Well without Falwell, we wouldn't have tens of thousands of dead in Iraq. And ironically, how many of the dead American soldier's parents are followers/supporters of Falwell's?

NPR got it right this a.m. Mentioning the gay issue, addressing it several times but I would have liked them to be more direct. After mentioning his issues with gays lesbians, ACLU, feministes etc they played some recordings of him him "backpedaling" or "spinning" his own statements. ...........Go to NPR.org and look up the morning edition coverage of it..........
