"Evolution Opponent Is in Line for Schools Post

By CORNELIA DEAN
Published: May 19, 2007

The National Association of State Boards of Education will elect officers in July, and for one office, president-elect, there is only one candidate: a member of the Kansas school board who supported its efforts against the teaching of evolution.

Scientists who have been active in the nation’s evolution debate say they want to thwart his candidacy, but it is not clear that they can.

The candidate is Kenneth R. Willard, a Kansas Republican who voted with the conservative majority in 2005 when the school board changed the state’s science standards to allow inclusion of intelligent design, an ideological cousin of creationism. Voters later replaced that majority, but Mr. Willard, an insurance executive from Hutchinson, retained his seat. If he becomes president-elect of the national group, he will take office in January 2009..."

All it takes is for bystanders to stand by, watching, making excuses for why they haven't done anything...

The release of Al Gore's The Assault On Reason will make an interesting entry into the national debate about such topics.

The sanctifying of stem cells while we slaughter adults and allow others to die of disease and hunger, the denial of the existence of global warming or at least of our ability or need to do anything about it, the constant clatter about how everyone should have the unrestricted right to carry a gun to decrease the likelihood of guns being used to kill people; these all defy reason and logic IMO.

Though I don't expect Al Gore to entire the presidential primary race I would probably vote for him as an independent. But that is even less likely.

He is probably being more effective now, using his popularity as a bully pulpit, than he could be confined by the neccessities of American politics or political office.
