Hmmm...since I do want to see a game at RFK Stadium before the Nationals move to their new park, perhaps I should go to their game in July? Hmmm...

FWIW, this is the first time that the Giants' "Until There's a Cure Day" will not be on a weekend afternoon. I'm not sure what that means, but the Friday night game in question is also the first of their 2 LGBT nights this year. The other is the August game you mentioned.

Personally, I've sworn off Giants LGBT nights. The "gay section" is never cohesively gay; at the last one I went to, last year, I was surrounded by straight people: two rows of Florida Marlins fans who were on vacation and dressed head-to-toe in Marlins gear, and a local law firm on a work outing who never shut up thru the whole game. Except for a couple of lesbians in my row, that was it, I kept trying to figure out where all the gay people from the pre-game "mixer" were sitting, as I didn't recognize a soul. Maybe it's a San Francisco thing, but from what I've read on this board, Ballgame Gay Nights in other cities seem to be more communal.

As I read the item in the link, the mixer is pre-game (picnic section behind center field scoreboard) but there isn't one set group of tickets. So they were probably all over the place depending on how much they wanted to spend.

I'm really put off by the fact that the Mets/Yanks aren't doing one. I think the Mets did it last year, whats up with that?

Probably there's not anyone willing to take on the responsibility of organizing it- they did have one a couple of years ago. It would be nice if the organizations would take it upon themselves to welcome that part of their community, but I guess they have to feel that the community is truly interested in having a 'day' in the first place.

As mentioned in Jock Talk the other day, Out at Petco Park Night (July 8th) with the San Diego Padres is ruffling the usual feathers.

QUOTE
July will be a busy month at Petco Park, with the Padres hosting special days for Episcopalians, children in summer camps, knitters and people of Jewish heritage. But it is Pride Night, a July 8 event for gays and lesbians, that is causing a stir.
An El Cajon-based Christian ministry is protesting the confluence of Pride Night with a floppy cap giveaway for children 14 and younger, saying the Padres are welcoming thousands of youngsters on the same day they're celebrating a lifestyle that the religious group calls sinful.

Set Free Ministries will make its point by walking out on the 42 concession jobs its participants fill. The recovery program run by Southern Baptist missionaries also plans to pass out fliers about Pride Night to families entering Petco Park that day.

A Padres spokesman said the team welcomes all fans – gay, religious, butcher, baker or candlestick maker – in the name of boosting attendance. The team hosts more than 5,000 groups for special events each season. Others in recent memory: Harley-Davidson Night and Bowling League Night.

“It's simply a group sale. A lot of people are taking and running with it under the misconception that we're taking a political stand and endorsing a lifestyle or a set of values,” said George Stieren, Padres director of business public relations.

Boycott of gay pride event at Padres game fizzles

As boycotts go, yesterday's protest at Petco Park flopped - like the hats.

Roughly 75 protesters showed up outside Petco Park's front gate dressed in red T-shirts emblazoned with the message "Save Our Kids." They handed out fliers. A few attempted to talk with Padre fans as they arrived for the 5:05 p.m. game that was nationally televised on ESPN.

... "Bringing together homosexuals with baseball and kids is beyond bounds. We're trying to get people to turn around, not go to the game, and we're succeeding."

If so, it wasn't readily apparent. Official attendance for the game was 41,026, just short of a capacity crowd for the 42,685-seat ballpark.

Some inside-the-park photos on Flickr, and Rex Wockner has a couple on his blog.

Meanwhile, the chief lunatic outside Petco. Yecch...
