We're back - after a very exciting event in 2003, that attracted 730 LGBT fans & our friends and attracted national press attention, this year we are going to be OUT at the new ballpark. The game is Monday August 9th (vs. Rockies) at 7:05 PM, and this night is also $1.00 (hot) dog night. wink
This year we are hoping for over 1000 attendees. Just like last year, if enough people purchase tickets, someone from the LGBT community will throw out the opening pitch and "Gay Community Night" will be displayed on the scoreboard.
The event is not a fundraiser, but promises to be a lot of fun!
Tickets are only $16 and can be ordered by
printing out an order form (in PDF format).
The order form can be mailed or faxed directly to the Phillies.

I know you guys discussed Phillies gay day at the convention. However, WHY did they have to choose a Monday night  ? I understand that the Phillies are not going to allow a Saturday or Sunday, but if it was at least a Thursday or Friday, I probably would have taken a quick train up there. Monday just sucks if you live out-of-town.
Joe in Philly
Jun 26 2004, 07:31 PM
You'd have to ask scottie to be sure, but if I recall, it was thought that it might be easier to have out-of-towners come for the weekend and stay Monday to go to the game, instead of having to come in on a Thursday. I'm not sure why, but there was a reason Fridays were not considered to be a good idea. I think it may have to do with local people hitting the beaches for the weekend, and around here they leave on Friday for that. And most of the tickets will be sold to locals.
Last year's game was on a Tuesday, by the way.

Jun 27 2004, 05:56 PM
Sorry Monday doesn't work out in your schedule. We couldn't schedule the game for a Friday/Saturday/Sunday because we couldn't be guaranteed the opening pitch and scoreboard acknowledgement ("Gay Community Night"). We are trying a Monday this year because 1) the evening is dollar (hot) dog night and 2) some from out of town last year said a Monday would be good, as they could make it a long weekend.

Oh, great. Just shoot down my beach theory.

So, since this less than a month and a half away, we can do the same thing as last year if we want a united Outsports group. I can order and hold the tickets until game day, and we can meet at the park. Anyone interested?

Joe,
Are there still tickets available? I have some time to use or lose at work, and this would be a perfect opportunity.

I'm not Joe, but there are still tickets available and we'd love to have you join us.

I just received an update from the Phillies, we've sold about 500 tickets so far. As we reserved 1000 tickets, we're going to have to decide if we need to reserve more seats (if more seats are available).

I'm in!! I just booked my flights and will be in Philly from Friday, Aug. 6th to Tuesday, Aug. 10th. Woohoo!! My first trip to Philly, evah!
Joe or scottie, could you please reserve one ticket for me in the official Outsports section? (Although maybe I shouldn't sit within arms' reach of Joe - I know he gets violent at these events and tends to start swinging.

) Also, I'd like to reserve a comfortable seat with a good cruising view at the Bikestop, please. First round's on me.
Did I mention? Woohoo!!!

Besides, if you're part of our group you get to meet the one and only Seph! Hey Joe, maybe you can get your sportsradio friends to interview him and see if his attitude has changed in the last three years, see what he thinks about Gay Day at the Phillies. At least he might be good for a laugh...

Are we supposed to be wearing rainbow colored clothing, or some other type of identifiable item? If I recall correctly, I remember seeing a lot of red in pictures of last year's game.
Joe in Philly
Aug 3 2004, 10:40 AM
Red would be the Phillies' color, of course.
If things go the same way this week as they did in the past week, bring a paper bag to wear over your head. eek!

Oh, great. So now I have to dig up my old rainbow fright wig out of the attic? And how, praytell, do I explain at customs why I'm dressing up as a rainbow? I know! "I'm Doug Hennings' lost love child."
Hope the Phils can string together a few wins out on the west coast this week. I'm really not interested in traveling all this way just to watch some sub-.500 team play. I can do that at home.

Just noticed that
Gay Community Night with the Phillies is listed on the
AOL/Cityguide Philadelphia. It says this:
QUOTE
Thanks to a mid-season slump and resultant infighting among players, coaches and management, there's not much to be gay about in the clubhouse at Citizens Bank Park. Ignoring this downbeat atmosphere, the Phillies will pledge their allegiance to the rainbow flag during Gay Community Night, an evening sponsored by the Gay and Lesbian Lawyers of Philadelphia (GALLOP) and the Philadelphia chapter of the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association. While the Colorado Rockies await the start of a four-game series, the Phils will welcome a procession of ambassadors from the gay community -- among them Sue Gildea of the City of Brotherly Love Softball League (who will throw the first pitch) and the Spruce Street Singers (who will put their distinctive spin on the National Anthem). Those hoping to leave with a keepsake of the event may have to make do with the $1 hot dogs, however, since no consensus could be reached on plans for an Oscar Wilde bobblehead.
There is a section where you can post comments (User Reviews and Ratings). There are a couple of negative comments at present. Perhaps some Outsporters might like to add some positive, friendly comments.

Update - the team sucks, Bowa and Ed Wade should both be fired, but we've sold almost 1100 tickets. If anyone is still thinking about going, buy your tickets in the next day or two before we sell out.

Latest count is 1260 people attending. If someone wants to count the # of people present to verify the number, feel free to.
We're recommending people be at the ballpark by 6:30 PM, so you are there to see the opening pitch (by Sue Gildea, Commissioner of the City of Brotherly Love Softball League) and the National Anthem sung by the Spruce Street Singers.

CPT Doom: I don't have an exact time for when I'm getting out of work...as early as possible, of course. The earlier I get into work, the earlier I leave and have more time to kill. I'll send you a PM with my cell phone number. Call me on Monday when you get here and I can tell you exactly when I can meet you, and we can coordinate with Seph, who is set to arrive tomorrow. We can take the subway to be at the ballpark by, say, 6 pm. That will give you CBP newbies a chance to walk around the place while allowing enough time to see the anthem and first pitch as scottie mentioned. My assumption is that scottie will head down there a lot earlier, as he did last year. mdphl and phillyrunner: do you want to meet us in CC or at the park?
When Seph arrives tomorrow he's supposed to call me to set up a little get-together in town tomorrow night or during the weekend, so that might be an opportunity for you local guys to get their ticket if needed. Once I hear from him I'll post the plan here.
