I read
this story on the health dangers of high fructose corn syrup and how it is in so much of what we eat. I'm surprised that it's not yet in everything we eat because of how easy it is to manufacture.
Seeing this article has awakened me to how much of this stuff I eat. This is in spite of the fact that I try to keep my eye on what I eat. This is certainly came as a shock to me.

You really have to pay attention to the ingredients that are in things. I have begun to pay so much more attention to what I'm actually putting into my body. I've been doing a lot more shopping at Whole Foods and I read everything. Sugar is the culprit for the obesity problem in this country. Its not so much about fat as it is sugar!!
You can actually tie in the rising obesity levels in the US to the introduction of high fructose corn syrup into the marketplace. A created product introduced why? Simply for someone to make money on. It is actually the same with infant formula. Another created product that is inferior to the real thing but marketed as better. When the FDA or Surgeon General recommends making a product more healthy like adding more whole grains, companies like General Mills start to negotiate how much more. What are they really negotiating? Our health.

We've been avoiding high fructose corn syrup for a while now. Big culprits are sodas. On the rare occasions we buy soda, we buy soda sweetened with cane sugar.
We avoid artificial trans-fat too. Butter is okay with us, but hydrogenated-anything is something we try to avoid.

Lord, I don't know what to eat anymore. I'm already trying to not ear enriched flour. Now, after reading this, I looked at my whole wheat wheat thins, and the 4th or 5th ingredient was high fructose corn syrup.
Damn!

I try not to eat sweet snacks because I've been known to go through a package of oreos in one sitting and demolish a box of cupcakes as well
I'm also giving up margarine for butter-I'm trying to get rid of as many chemicals from my diet as possible
I've also started to steer my boyfriend towards 100% juices instead of those juice drinks; still has a lot of sugar but at least it's natural sugars
