Isn't there a song (possibly from the '70s, although I hesitate to speculate since I've been wrong twice on this thread) called "Rainy-Day People"?

Indeed there was, Eric....I mentioned it already in post #11.....Rainy Day People by Gordon Lightfoot. Unless there is another song by the same title from that era.
Also, I Think it's Going to Rain Today by Randy Newman and covered by several other singers.

A xouple of rain songs that bring up different feelings:
"Laughter in the Rain" by Neil Sedaka, a good song for spending with someone you love
"I Can't Stand The Rain" by Tina Turner, a rain song that makes you not want to think about those you lost in love
"Rain" by Madonna, about the loss of someone you loved
"Rainy Days and Mondays" by The Carpenters, great classic song
"It's Raining Men" by The Weather Girls, one of those songs you love to hear on the dance floor

There's also Dylan "Rainy Day Women, etc" - they stone the hell out of you. There are some others but that's the one that's probably most well-known?
Also "Box of Rain" by the Grateful Dead.

QUOTE(Eric Swanson @ Jul 10 2007, 01:17 PM)

Two classic songs mentioning rain from Broadway musicals:
"Don't Rain on My Parade" — Funny Girl
"The Rain in Spain" — My Fair Lady
For my $ the best of the musicals lot (altho' it didn't play B'way) is
Raining in My Heart -- Bernadette Peters from Dames at Sea (book and lyrics by George Haimsohn and Robin Miller and music by Jim Wise)
But I think putting Dylan's Rainy Day Women (#12 & 35) next to Gloria's It's Raining Men is the perfect pairing.

I haven't seen this one listed here yet: "I Wish It Would Rain" by Nanci Griffith. From her album Little Love Affairs, 1988, MCA.
Not well known, but man -- well worth hunting down. Griffith rules.

Well, given the weather here for the last month (though most of this weekend has be wonderful), this is the perfect thread to resurrect. However, I don't think anyone mentioned the following:
"Here's That Rainy Day" by Jimmy Van Heusen and Johnny Burke.
Recorded by innumerable people, including Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Rosemary Clooney, Ella Fitzgerald, Dave Brubeck, Oscar Peterson and many others.
And it has a gay connection... Johnny Carson and gay-fave Better Midler sang it on the next to last Tonight Show before he retired.

I did a rain CD a few years ago... I Started it with
Bad Weather (an obsure Supremes song) followed by Clouds by Chaka Khan and then went on to take from songs about rain from various genres and ended with Somewhere Over The Rainbow by Izzy...I gave that CD to a few people and they loved it.

Imterestingly I was gonna post this in the MJ thread but thought this one was more suitable when I saw the title.
This song isn't one that is about rain so much as one that invoked rain when I first heard it.
This vid of Michael Jackson's "Human Nature" reminds me that, even though the sun was shining and the sky was cloudless, I immediately had the feeling of a pleasant rain shower - a kind of relief or release - which is perhaps what Jackson felt when he sang it.
The songs universality was made plain by
Matt Giraud's seamless translation to a lower, soulful register more reminiscent of country music. I missed that performance during Idol, but hearing it now, his version gives rise to an image more like an oncoming righteous summer storm than a gentle rainshower.
Credit where credit is due: MJ's Human Nature was the brainchild of music writer
Steve Pocaro and lyricist
John Bettis. (And I got that same sense of universality when Bucky Covington translated Stevie wonders
Superstition.) But the greatest evocation of water or rain that I have ever heard is Mozart and Lorenzo da Ponte:
Soave sia il vento from
Così.
