MISSION VIEJO, California -- "American Kate Ziegler smashed the legendary world 1500m freestyle record of the great Janet Evans with an astonishing swim in California on Sunday night.
The 1500m world champion set a new best of 15 minutes 42.54 seconds over nine and half seconds quicker than Evans' old mark which was set back in 1988 and was swimming's oldest world record.
At the time, multi Olympic and world champion Evans was the first woman to break 16 minutes. "It was pretty spectacular," Mark Schubert, national team coach and general manager of USA Swimming, told The Associated Press.
"Kate was delighted when she looked at the scoreboard. She practically jumped out of the pool."
It was Ziegler's fourth victory at the meeting, having already won the 200, 400 and 800 freestyle events.
At the world championships back in March, Ziegler won the 1,500 in 15:53.05, the second-fastest in history behind Evans. The race is not an Olympic event for women.
The 18-year-old from Great Falls, Virginia, idolizes Evans, who was not on hand.
"I'm sure she'll be happy for Kate, but she'll probably be a little disappointed," said Schubert, who coached Evans. Evans still holds the 800 free world record, set on August 20, 1989, in Tokyo " ????
I think there is a woman from Singapore, Lynette Lim who broke this record recently.
