At my level, these are forms of recreation, not sports. Seeing as how it's getting cold, I feel the urge to throw in a link or a comment on occasion. Such as:

For the New Yorkers:

Weekly Ski and Snowboarding Trips to Jay Peak, Vermont

Dig that funky javascripted falling snowflake effect.

Thanks to a lister at the message forum at DCSki for the link.

Cross-country skiing on the Mall, anyone?

It's snowing in the DC 'burbs tonight.

Pennsylvania's Whitetail opens on Saturday. The lift tickets are $15. Liberty has "special prices," which probably means $15 as well.

Some resorts in West Virginia will also open. Links:

hmm, skiing has been open here since before Thanksgiving. Oh yeah, we have real mountains too.

When I lived in DC, I did travel to West Virginia and Vermont quite a bit. But it's nice to now live somewhere where and hour drive puts me either skiing or at the coast. smile.gif

You can go snowboarding year-round at Timberline on Mt. Hood. I used to live in Vancouver WA, and I've been to Timberline, Mt. Hood Meadows, and Washington's Stevens Pass.

That lodge at Timberline is such a handsome place. Listers may not know that its exterior is seen in the movie "The Shining."

I think I'm going to start crying.

How far is Mt. Hood from Portland? Is the snow any good. The only decent snow I have skied on in the PNW has been up at Whistler. Although Having grown up in Utah I am a bit of a Snow snob... wink
TonkaManOR
Mariner,

it can be good, it can be bad. I've skiied there when the powder was up past my knees. I have skied on corduroy. The best was skiing in May when these two HOT studs were snowboarding shirtless.

Needless to say.......I missed that tree that jumped out in front of me. biggrin.gif

I'm from the East and let me tell you when the snow is bad here in the PNW it still isn't as bad as the time I was skiing at Jay Peak in Vermont when part of the way down a trail we went from snow to mud to snow!
TonkaManOR
Opps, the answer to your question is depends on where you start in Portland. MT. Hood is about an hour from my house. wink

Do I ever. Some folks at rec.skiing.snowboard like Mt. Bachelor. I've never been there.

If you went to their online website, I'm sure they would say "conditions couldn't be better!"

Well that would be about 3 hours from Seattle then... I miss the 40 minute drives with access to 7 major ski areas. That is the only part of Salt Lake I miss.

Hey Tonka, are there nice lodges and places to eat at Mt. Hood?

Here's a high class joint:

There are some nice places in Hood river to eat and to stay. The hood river Hotel is really nice. The BF and I stayed there one weekend!

http://www.hoodriverhotel.com/welcome.html

And Timberline is very nice. You might even run into Picabo Street there! Got to love a girl who drinks Microbrews!! wink

I'm not much for girls, but I recall a picture of her from ten years ago. Whe was wearing a Spyder suit and looked really, really cute. I wouldn't have kicked her out.

Am I still allowed to post here?

If the cameras are aimed just right, it almost appears as if the raging snowstorm has the ground in Pennsylvania thoroughly blanketed with the white stuff. Or snow.
MarinerFan
Hey Twin and Tonka thanks for the great info! I think I may plan a trip in January. My goal this winter is to get my partner good enough that he no longer needs snowboarding lessons. I have been skiing for about 25 years, so no snowboarding for this camper.

We are planning a trip up to Whistler next weekend. Hopefully we will have some decent snow between now and then.

I had to.......... biggrin.gif

Marinerfan,

You're Welcome. I highly recommend the Hood River Hotel. The staff was great, they have a jacuzzi, the rooms are quaint and warm. And they have a nice big fireplace in their lobby where you can have a brandy and read for a little while.

There is a brew pub just a block up the street that has live music on weekends. A very cool outdoor sports town all in all.

It's snowing at Timberline and snowing in the upper elevations of Meadows, with freezing rain at lower. It is supposed to change to snow later.

Maybe I'll go skiing tomorrow or Sunday! Sweet!! smile.gif

As of today Timberline is reporting 91" base at the lodge, 34 degrees, partly cloudy, winds 0-5 mph.

Route 26 looks clear. http://www.timberlinelodge.com/conditions/roadcams.asp

Mt hood meadows reports 57"base at lodge, 68" upper elevations, winds 5-15 mph temp 33-35 degrees

it sure looks pretty....

From a post at DC Ski.com:

I don't know if anyone else has seen this, but yesterday I purchased a 24pack of Sierra Mist soda and was surprised to find inside printed on all of the cans was a coupon. By taking the can to the Canaan Valley ticket window you can get a lift ticket for $10 anytime on Monday - Fri all season long until March 26 (excluding holidays).
The Sierra Mist website requires Flash, and because I refuse to install Flash, I have no idea if the coupons are on cans only, or cans and bottles, or if similar deals are available elsehwere.

January 8 is "Pennsylvania Learn to Ski" day. On this day, resorts all over PA will have blocks of tickets, for $10 each, that include the equipment rental and lift ticket.

Google for "pennsylvania learn to ski" or "Pennsylvania Ski Areas Association". The PSSA website says little about the event, so visit a ski or board shop or call a nearby ski area for more information.

You can view conditions at the three PA ski areas closest to DC by going to:
http://www.skiwhitetail.com/camera.htm
http://www.skiliberty.com/webcams.htm
http://www.skiroundtop.com/camera.htm

It's an unbeatable deal, marred only by the fact that the seventy degree weather over the weekend has trashed all the snow. A cold spell this week may let the ski areas make more though.

Snowboarded yesterday on 8" of new powder. Weather was clear about 34 degrees. Couldn't ask for a prettier day. Two weekends in a row and I'm going again on Sunday!
And all three ski areas got more snow last night. Timberline is reporting a base of 153". Meadows 115-125" base and Skibowl is at 70".

I sure don't miss the "is it cold enough to make ski" areas of the East.

All I can do is sigh. You take what you can get. Conditions locally are good. Guess I ought to wax my board. And go snowboarding and skiing too.

TonkaManOR, did you notice that today's newest member, radiobuff, lives in Vancouver WA? Wonder if he likes boarding.

No I didn't. I have to look him up! Always happy to find winter sports buddies!!

Twin, Sorry but the Cacades are getting slammed by a winter storm the next two days. They are expecting a lot of snow. I could try and ship some to you??? smile.gif
twin58
It would help.

Microscopic crowds, but it's windy today. I hate being in those lift chairs when they're swinging around. There's nowhere to hide from the wind. I'd like to get in a night session or two.

Historically, DC is most likely to get snow in the four week period that covers the last week in January and the first three weeks in February. We have just entered that period.

The coldest part of the year is right now. If you examine a weather almanac for DC, you see that the average highs and lows for a two week period at the end of January are neither increasing nor decreasing. We are at the bottom.

Radiobuff's profile

Think I'll post something about the Knickerbocker snowstorm....

Wow, I remember skiing at Liberty. That was the first place I ever went skiing. And actually the last place I went before I left for the West Coast. My siste still goes there occasionally. I think she prefers WhiteTail now for local skiing.

I spent a lot more time at Wisp though. Really love the Deep Creek Lake area. Had friends who owned a cabin there. Of course the cabin wasn't winterized, so we took turns staying up at night to keep a fire going in the fireplace. The joys of being young. wink

Enough snow to knock over freight cars

60 inches in this storm. Nearest ski area is Big Mountain.

Great to see gay skiing and boarding is going well in the Northern Hemisphere, am very jealous, am having to "suffer" through summer here

Am already dreaming of the opening of the season here in the South - should be June (ish)

If any of you are planning on heading down let me know - can give you the inside scoop.

Cheers

PS - think there is a gay ski week sometime in Sept down here - details are usually posted at
