she's playing singles in bali. i have to admit, i thought she was gone for good when she got pregnant, but i'm glad she's decided to test the waters.

YAY!! She should be back in the top 10 in no time. Great serve, clean ball striking. The movement I'm sure will still be an issue but she plays such great first strike tennis that she'll be enough of a dominant force to be reckoned with.

I can't believe she is back into playing shape in less than 2 months! Most have been an easy pop out birth. Wide hips DOES help, as I've heard.

Davenport to return to WTA singles in September at Bali

July 31, 2007
BALI, INDONESIA (TICKER) -- Former world No. 1 Lindsay Davenport will resume her singles career in Bali this September.

The 31-year-old American retired from tennis last year due to a back injury and a wish to focus on family life. She gave birth to her first child - son Jagger - in June.

But the three-time Grand Slam champion has now announced she will return to the WTA Tour for the Commonwealth Bank Tennis Classic, which will begin September 10.

"I'm excited to be playing Bali once again," said Davenport, the 2005 winner of this Tier III hardcourt event. "It's such a beautiful environment and everyone is so friendly and supportive of all the players.

"It's always a great week and a lot of fun. I've really enjoyed playing the tournament in the past and feel it's the perfect place for me to begin playing singles again."

The 1999 Wimbledon champion, Davenport announced two weeks ago that she will return to competitive tennis in August at New Haven, where she will team with Lisa Raymond in the doubles event

It was a C-Section. mad.gif

I'm shocked. A c-section takes time to recover from with the cutting of the stomach muscles...I think it must have helped tremendously that she got pregnant soon after she left the tour so she was still in great shape, which means her recovery was speedy. I'm not surprised that she wants to come back as her last few years had to be frustrating with getting so close to winning another slam, with actually being the odds on favorite for a few, and with the unfortunate things that happened that stopped her...I think she really wants to win a medal but you've got to believe that she still wants that one more elusive slam. Perhaps seeing Serena and Venus come back and have their glorious moments has further inspired her...

I also sense that these veterans, these proven slam winners like the Williams, Henin and LD, see that the field is full of good players who haven't yet shown the mental grit to pull out these big wins...None of the up and comers have been able to take the slams from the veterans despite seemingly being ready to ascend...Go LD!

LD and Raymond will be a very formidable doubles team...wherever they play...

I hope we see her in the Olympics next year. I think each country gets 4 singles players, and two doubles teams in.
But wow talk about a quick recovery.

It is kind of shocking because not only does one have to recover from the surgery, but what about time spent with the child???? NAH, I can't be judgmental. It's just that it seems like she'd want to be with the kid for its first 2 years.
ALSO--they do not cut the stomach muscle in a C-section. They cut the abdomen and take out the intestines in order to get to the uterus, but the stomach is not down there...
Even Brittney Spears <gag> could not exercise for a month after her C section, and she does 1000 ab crunches a day.....

Bryan meant that they cut the abdominal muscles, not the stomach itself.

And let's not be too judgmental. I'm sure the baby (and nanny) will be accompanying Lindsay as much as possible. If this were a man who just became a father, no one would even suggest he cut back on his career.

Im glad to see her back, she was one of my favs, but I wonder if the time off will hurt her. She's the type player that if she cannot compete, we wont see her very long.. maybe doubles.

Not a bad showing at all for first time out, and she plans to get back in a NOT retire. This is great.
Although I am not a fan of her style. I like to see the top players have more competition.

NEW HAVEN, Connecticut (AP) - Three-time major winner Lindsay Davenport returned to the court after taking almost a year off to have a child, losing a doubles match at the Pilot Pen to the top team in the world on Wednesday.

Davenport and partner Lisa Raymond were beaten by Cara Black and Liezel Huber 6-7 (1), 6-3, and 10-4 in the match tiebreaker.
But for Davenport, it wasn't all about winning or losing.

"It was fun to be back," she said. "Obviously, this is the first step in a long process."

Davenport had not played since last September, and gave birth to her first child, Jagger Jonathan Leach, in June. She plans to return to singles play next month at a tournament in Bali.

"I feel I'm still very good at my job and having a child doesn't mean you have to abandon all your career and everything," she said. "I feel like while he's this young, and so far this good, I can drag him around the world and try and do what I still love to do."

Davenport lamented having to play the top seeds in the first round. Black and Huber have already won six doubles titles this year, including the Australian Open and Wimbledon.
