GatorJamie
Tired of slaving away all day over a hot PC? Want a break from the full-contact sport of Washington, DC traffic?

Come meet your fellow Washington-area OutSporters at a happy hour on Wednesday, July 16, 2003 at 6 p.m. at 30 Degrees, located at 1639 R St. NW (corner of 17th/R) above FoodBar. 30 Degrees has 2-for-1 happy-hour specials on selected martinis, stylish decor, and is easily accessible, just a short walk from the Dupont Circle Metro. Post-happy hour dinner options abound along the 17th Street corridor.

We're planning a fun, festive evening. Wear something that identifies you, either by your screen name or a favorite topic.

See you then!

GatorJamie

Hey GatorJamie -
I'll see you there. What brought this on? Just jonesing to see what DCBucky looks like? Is 30 Deg. expecting us or are we just showin' up?
Cattledog
Boston Fan, I think I am going to show up in my Giambi jersey (pinstripes and #25, of course). tongue.gif

G.J., finally decided on starting a brand new thread instead of the Rainy Washington one? Good decision! smile.gif

I will stay on topic.
I will stay on topic.
I will stay on topic.
I will stay on topic.

I will stay on topic.
I will stay on topic.

And BostonFan, lots of us have been kicking around the idea of having a local meet 'n' greet -lots of interesting personalities. Looks like the bigger events in LA & Montreal were fun, too.

I've been making a list of those who've said that they'll attend, and will let 30 Degrees know to expect us, so that we can possibly get a "reserved" area. It can get packed in there.

gj

p.s. Already met DCBucky - he (and his husband) are cutie patooties!

Hopefully I can make it to this event. Sounds like fun. Not sure what I will be wearing, but most likely something Duke-related.

Hmm... I'd like to try to make it out. It should be fun.

What's the dress code at this place? Any particular look to gun for? Just wondering...
PhillyFan
spandex and 1/2 shirts william....

sorry, couldnt resist.
DC_guy
It's a nice place, kind of loungey. Definitely my favorite gay bar in the area and good staff. It's upscale, but not too much, you'll be comfortable wearing whatever you wore to work.
GatorJamie
FYI, y'all, we thus far have 12 folks acknowledging their attendance...

And William, DC_guy is correct re attire, atmosphere, although you may want to go with Phil's suggestion if the spandex matches your afore-mentioned Bush-Gore shirt. biggrin.gif

Great idea, Gator Jamie....despite my lack of presence on this board lately, as luck would have it Wednesday is the ideal night for me this week so I will plan to show up at 30 degrees....I can also attest to the fact that it does have a relaxed, casual environment -- perhaps I may even wear some Gamecock Garnet and Black attire (if for no other reason than to give the 'Cocks some good karma as they stay alive in the College World Series).

Oops, my bad!....I clearly had a brain lapse mistaking June for July (you'd have thought I would have realized that TODAY is June 16th, not Wednesday anyway) -- nothing wrong with planning ahead though....I'll be sure to mark my calendar for JULY 16th and you can count me in among the attendees, GJ and company.
DCBucky
Thanks for setting this up Jamie! I'm looking forward to meeting everyone. Will have to pull out my most stylish Badger gear for the event!

Jamie,

I'll be there too. Since it will be hot, I'm sure I'll be in a Polo shirt, though likely sports-themed somewhere on it.

It will be nice to finally meet some of the people from here.

By the time we meet, D.C. will have become Venice on the Potomac.

Except in this group, there's undoubtedly going to be someone who's perfectly happy being in the rear... biggrin.gif

At this pace with a month to go, GJ may have to reserve the entire place just for us -- who knows, maybe Jim and Cyd will be in town and stop by (as long as they pick up the tab wink tongue.gif ).
MSUBobcat
I should take a little trip over there and visit.

I think I need a GJ shopping experience, from the story in another thread. he he he wink
GatorJamie
Yes, you should, you handsome fella!
William1865
GJ, what about the ex-Alabama football player you were talking about? Any word? Just sounded sort of interesting in an adolescent-fantasy-come-true sort of way...
GatorJamie
Nope, haven't seen him surface yet. He said that he had scoped out the site before, but hadn't posted. He seemed interested in the conversations, as well as the happy hour (although the date hadn't been set yet on DC Pride weekend).

He said that he was going to go by "Bama Bob," so I guess we'll just look for him. He said that he played when Mike Shula played and had complimentary things to say about showering with him ( eek! ). From the looks of him, he was probably a lineman or linebacker, but I'll tell ya, that old adage about muscle turning to fat is b.s. - this guy is built, and not really in that roid way. He's funny as hell, too!
GatorJamie
OK, how funny is this - one of my coworkers just came into my office when I was typing on another thread and said, "You're GatorJamie!"

(I mean, duh, look at the alligators all over my office and my Gator ID lanyard)

Ennyhoo, we have another recruit and another happy hour attendee!

pat125
Are out-of-towners welcome? I have friends in the DC area that I was going to visit this summer, so I just might make it in the middle of July.

Your fame is continuing to spread, GJ (not to mention attendance at next month's gala)....to think that your own co-worker wasn't aware of your "identity" eek! ....glad to hear you've won over another Outsports recruit -- any idea what their username will be yet? (not that it will take us long to determine if their posts are as entertaining as yours). biggrin.gif
GatorJamie
Pat, come one, come all! In fact, it would be cool as hell if the Philly guys could make it (although the middle of the workweek could be tuff).

And thanks for the kind words, gamecock. Dunno what his screen name is gonna be, but he's a huge Pitt fan, so it will be something like that.

smile.gif
pittkid
Hi all,

It's GatorJamie's co-worker (yes, I knew she was a Gator fan all along, just didn't know she was here at OutSports)...

I'm looking forward to the Happy Hour and meeting all you guys....

Yep, big Pitt fan.... not liking this whole ACC v. Big east stuff happening. Pitt and WVU should get into the Big Ten, let the rest go to the ACC or wherever... I miss the Pitt/Penn St. rivalry... sniff sniff....
DCBucky
welcome to the board pittkid! My bf's from the 'Burgh -- he bleeds black-and-gold. Likes U. of Pitt too -- we saw the hoops team play the Hoyas this Feb. during the big snow storm. We'll see how this whole ACC/Big Easy thing turns out for them ... I'd like to see them in the Big Ten too! Looking forward to meeting you in July.
gamecock
Hearty Outsports welcome, pittkid -- looks like you native PA guys are starting to take over the board (not that that's a bad thing, of course) tongue.gif ....I know the Pitt football program is in mourning today after one of their wide receivers, Billy Haines, tragically died while falling through a church ceiling onto the pews yesterday -- coincidentally, my nephew was on the same football team as Haines at Urbana H.S. in Ijamsville, MD two years ago and said Billy was one of the nicest guys on the squad (a real overachiever too at 5'7'')....I'm not trying to bring a somber note to this upbeat thread but your mention of the Panthers football program (Walt Harris has done a phenomenal job there, I might add) brought that to mind.

Look forward to meeting all of you fellow Outsporters next month in DC!

My current ultimate fantasy is that when I'm at the Phillies Phestival ALS fundraiser on Monday and I get to the photo booths of Pat Burrell and Mike Lieberthal, wearing my Outsports cap, that I say \"Hi, how ya doin'? I'm Joe\" and one of them replies, \"Are you Joe in Philly by any chance?\" biggrin.gif wink eek!

Oh, how choice would that be. Especially if he then said, "Is it true what they say about you in the Hot Jocks Forum?" biggrin.gif

Too bad about the happy hour, but we'll see about having something else on a weekend. Maybe around football season?

HEY HEY,

Thanks DCBucky and Gamecock....

Yeah, I had a slow period of being a true blue Pitt fan, but seeing how both the football and basketball programs have grown and improved so much ... my Panther Fever is back biggrin.gif ... plus I got the chance to visit the campus last spring and I had fun with some friends.

Would love to go to some games this fall with folks.... hint hint kids..... no matter what conference they're in by then (go Big Ten, bring on the Nittany Lions!). But would love to road trip and go to a game or two with a herd of PA refugees...

Well, gotta pretend to work.... sigh....

Welcome PittKid (if I got that right... going off of memory).

Well, this shindig is getting bigger and bigger. Maybe GJ will have to rent out a larger space for us. smile.gif

you know, I've never been to the gay bingo thing at Chaos. I think that's on a Tues, so maybe we should all crash that some time.

Trevor
Cattledog
I have been trying to find gay bingo in the District forever, and I just can't find it. Please let me know which place holds it, and when they do so. Thanks.

Trevor
Cattledog,

I really am pretty sure it's Chaos on Tuesday's. Or maybe on Wed. I'll talk to some friends and see if anyone knows. I've never been, since I really dont' go out. I haven't been "out" in DC in like 6 months.

Trevor
William1865
Drag queen bingo @ Chaos is fun, though I haven't been in a while. For one round, they have a unique way of choosing which bingo line will be the winner for that round. They pick a guy out of the crowd, take him to the front and, with his back to the audience, unzip his pants and pull out his...um...thingy. If it points to the right, bingo for that game is diagonal from B down to o. To the left, o-b. If it points straight down, bingo is the center column.
dunumber44
I am almost positive that Drag Bingo is on Tuesday nights at Chaos. I remember going there after gay social vball once or twice. I know that Wednesdays are lesbian nights at Chaos (also a very fun night to be there).
Since I go out more than some of the other folks who post here, I figured I could contribute.
Looking forward to the Outsports get-together at Cobalt.
RGMike
Hey GatorJamie, I've been following this thread closely, since I'm thinking about doing something similar in SF... waiting to see what the ultimate turnout is like. I'm rooting for this to be a success!
Cattledog
I just read about the "Bingo" referrals that you guys posted about 5 days ago. Sorry about that... It sucks that these things are always on a weeknight. I have a friend in Ontario that goes to Toronto on the weekends, and is able to play gay bingo on Saturday afternoons. I also wish they had things here like they do in England like "Quiz Nights" and stuff. I think it's a great way to meet people at the bars instead of having to scream really loudly over booming music.

Mike,

I lived in SF from 1989-2000 and have a bunch of buddies still there (including my college boyfriend, who has just celebrated 9 years with his handsome hubby). If you decide to go for it, let me know and I'll pass the word to them.

FYI, we used to have Gator game-watching at Shannon's on Green Street. Though North Beach can be hetero hell, the owner, Jared, and his wife, were veryvery good to us, regardless of the fact that the lead party planners were out gay folk.

Happy (late) Pride!
