Bavarian Gabriele Pauli, a member of the Christian-affiliated, conservative Christian Social Party, a sister party of German Premier Angela Merkel's Christian Democratic Party, is standing for the party leadership on a platform that includes ending marriages after 7 years. After that point, if the couples want to extend the union, they can, and if not, they can go on to the next person! She also has posed in elbow-length latex gloves and in full leather regalia on a motorbike. And she's from the conservative party, in Germany's most conservative, predominantly Roman Catholic state.

Supposedly she got the last party leader, Edmund Stoiber, canned because he was spying on her trying to get info on her wild life. She probably will lose to a family values candidate who was recently revealed to have been having an affair during his marriage which led to a child out of wedlock. Sounds like he'd fit right in with the US GOP.

No word on whether she's for or against gay unions, but her party, I'd imagine, is strongly against them.

We have gay unions. CSU/CDU and FDP (despite having a gay chaiman) voted against it, but I wouldn't say they're strongly against them. Apart from the far right, I'd say gay unions are pretty much accepted nowadays.

Pauli's proposition isn't taken very seriously over here, not only with conservatives, although I don't think it's a bad idea. But people have all those shitty false romantic notions of marriage, I guess.

Anyway, the CSU only exists in Bavaria, so they're none of my problem.

Of course, we're not as liberal as the Brits yet. tongue.gif
