Still, isn't it possible--indeed, necessary--to project dignity and self-respect when meeting one's opponents? Isn't it hard to imagine the great leaders who have overcome prejudice and oppression--Martin Luther King, Jr. and Gandhi come to mind--using hysteria and "screaming" as a tool in their struggle? If this dude has actually said these things, can't we gay men, nonetheless, maintain a bit of mature perspective and simply refute what we find repugnant, or do we need to confirm the bigots' characterizations of us?
Why even accept
their perspective, frames, point-of-view? Is that really mature? Have we spent decades fighting for equality and an end to anti-gay discrimination just to crumble and fold and say, okay, please don't be anti-gay, but well, okay, we're mature and we accept that although you call yourself progressive and visionary you're going to be hanging out with people who are calling for a "WAR" against us, so we'll still send you money and vote for you?
There are tons of gospel singers, from South Carolina and elsewhere, that Obama could appeared with. It's not like McClurkin, or those tired Mary Mary homophobes are the only one. Hell, just skip the damned Gospel crap altogether--yes Obama, we know you're a practicing Christian--and get Kanye West and Common and folks like that down there and drum up some youth support. The older Black people are either going to vote for him or Clinton. Does anyone--anyone--seriously think they won't??? A recent TIMES article noted that he had sewn up the Black male vote. So who is McClurkin supposed to win over? Racist white nutcase evangelicals? The algorithm doesn't compute.
I'm sorry, but being a hanky-headed, sho-nuff, put-my-head-in-sand gay person isn't going to cut it in 2007. And as a Black gay man who has supported Obama, I'm especially disappointed. Obama needs to cut McClurkin loose. Immediately. It's that simple.
