A gay rights group on Monday urged Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama to cut ties with a gospel singer who they say spreads false information about gays and lesbians.

Donnie McClurkin is among several gospel singers scheduled to raise money for the Illinois senator at a concert in South Carolina this weekend.

McClurkin has drawn attention from gay rights activists for his views on homosexuality.

"I don't believe that it is the intention of God," McClurkin said Monday in a telephone interview.

McClurkin said he does not believe in discriminating against homosexuals. "What people do in their bedrooms and who they are as human beings are two different things," he said.

Yesterday I screamed at one of his campaign aides and told this kid that if Obama doesn't cut McClurkin loose he can kiss my support goodbye. And I helped raise money for him when he was first running for the US Senate, and have been a supporter up till this point.

Disgusting, but he's trying to play silly games like Hillary Clinton, who plays footsie with the neocons, which may get us all in trouble now that Cheney is seriously talking about bombing Iran...AGAIN. The sad thing is that according to one recent article, Obama pretty much has the Black male vote locked up in South Carolina, and it's Black women who're debating between him and Clinton. Have a hateful homophobe isn't going to attract White liberal voters or independents of either sex, so why on earth is he even associating with this closeted creep (because McClurkin was gay for 20 years...yep, you heard that right! Like Ms. Larry Craig, he's *not gay* now, and is fighting a "war" against us. Please, somebody, put these crazy ass people AWAY!) Oh well. Kiss that state and quite a few others bye-bye.

I still like looking at Obama, though, but I'm tired of the games.

And I never liked his music anyways ....*SNAP* tongue.gif

He believes it's wrong. So what? Lots of people do. If Obama wouldn't take any money from anyone who beleives homosexuality is against 'gods' intent, he'd probably get a lot less.
CPT_Doom
Number one, Buck, he does not merely portray being gay as "wrong," he claims to have been "delivered" from being gay himself (which of course occurred because he was molested by an uncle). He has made claims that all gays have been molested, are liars, and are trying to "kill our children." This is not about a policy disagreement, it is about someone who does not want to respect the existence of gay people and who has declared "war" on us.

McClurkin performed at the Republican National Convention in '04 and praised Bush. He also vowed to battle "the curse of homosexuality," and insists that sexuality can be changed by religious intervention. "If this is a war, we are willing to fight. Not a war of violence, but a war of purpose," he told the Washington Post in 2004.

I was really torn between Hillary and Obama not long ago but I could never vote for Obama now unless he is the Dem nominee. I would certainly never vote for him in the primary.

Still, isn't it possible--indeed, necessary--to project dignity and self-respect when meeting one's opponents? Isn't it hard to imagine the great leaders who have overcome prejudice and oppression--Martin Luther King, Jr. and Gandhi come to mind--using hysteria and "screaming" as a tool in their struggle? If this dude has actually said these things, can't we gay men, nonetheless, maintain a bit of mature perspective and simply refute what we find repugnant, or do we need to confirm the bigots' characterizations of us?

Why even accept their perspective, frames, point-of-view? Is that really mature? Have we spent decades fighting for equality and an end to anti-gay discrimination just to crumble and fold and say, okay, please don't be anti-gay, but well, okay, we're mature and we accept that although you call yourself progressive and visionary you're going to be hanging out with people who are calling for a "WAR" against us, so we'll still send you money and vote for you?

There are tons of gospel singers, from South Carolina and elsewhere, that Obama could appeared with. It's not like McClurkin, or those tired Mary Mary homophobes are the only one. Hell, just skip the damned Gospel crap altogether--yes Obama, we know you're a practicing Christian--and get Kanye West and Common and folks like that down there and drum up some youth support. The older Black people are either going to vote for him or Clinton. Does anyone--anyone--seriously think they won't??? A recent TIMES article noted that he had sewn up the Black male vote. So who is McClurkin supposed to win over? Racist white nutcase evangelicals? The algorithm doesn't compute.

I'm sorry, but being a hanky-headed, sho-nuff, put-my-head-in-sand gay person isn't going to cut it in 2007. And as a Black gay man who has supported Obama, I'm especially disappointed. Obama needs to cut McClurkin loose. Immediately. It's that simple.

If he believes that, let him.

None of which is mentioned in the article. The article implies that him believing homosexuality is a sin is reason enough to demand from Obama to cut his ties with him.
swiminbuff
He has the anti gay gospel singer / pastor to appeal to folk who don't accept homosexuals and now he has added a gay minister to appeal to folk who are accepting. Sorry Senator, its not enough. You have to stand up for what you believe, and let the votes fall where they may, but you can't have it both ways.
Coach McGuirk
Can you say "P-A-N-D-E-R-I-N-G? Obama has never been Presidential material by any stretch...
Baxion
Hey, don't knock Obama. He's a whole new generation of hypocritical bullsh*ters. Although I must admit, he is not presidental material. Perhaps ambassador to China.
boomer400
Well, Mr. McClurkin didn't disappoint...

QUOTE
The whole controversy might have been forgotten in the swell of gospel sound except Mr. McClurkin turned the final half hour of the three-hour concert into a revival meeting about the lightning rod he has become for the Obama campaign.

He approached the subject gingerly at first. Then, just when the concert had seemed to reach its pitch and about to end, Mr. McClurkin returned to it with a full-blown plea: “Don’t call me a bigot or anti-gay when I have suffered the same feelings,” he cried.

“God delivered me from homosexuality,” he added. He then told the audience to believe the Bible over the blogs: “God is the only way.” The crowd sang and clapped along in full support.

This might be the end of the line for me and Obama. Hillary it is?

Obama pulled this stunt

John Edwards keeps saying he's for the poor but way expensive haircuts and having his campaign HQ in some ritzy part of Chapel Hill sends a very mixed message

I'm almost supporting Hillary by default

Careful guys. Despite this fundamental political error we may be looking at Supreme Court Justice Obama some day.

He has hurt himself in this campaign by pandering to a hypocrite in the name of inclusiveness, but that just puts him on the level of the rest of them.

The sheen may have dulled but there are no shining knights at the top of the heap among the Dems running for the nomination. And unless one of the less glamorous candidates like Dodd or Kucinich can pull off a miracle we are stuck with one of three front-running wafflers right now.

I'll continue to pull for Edwards - fluffy hair and all - from the sidelines for now. This country will need someone with the courage and motivation to stand up to the Bushites who are foaming at the mouth about WWIII again.

And Edwards is the only one of the three who seems willing or able to give them the good old-fashioned southern spanking they will need to push them out of office.

I've listened to folks like McClurkin for so long that I guess I've become jaded. They will never learn it seems. He is working out psychoses more deeply ingrained than those of Larry Craig. Pray he hurts no one.
