Ryan Shay, the 2003 US marathon champ, collapsed after about 5 1/2 miles of today's qualifying race in New York City for the 2008 Olympics. He was only 28 years old.

I am sorry for Ryan. But I believe I just witnessed the best American Marathon ever, on television, and I can't stop crying.

Happily.

I wish I could have seen the trials. Maybe I would feel better now. I am devistated about Ryan Shay......I was out doing what I love, training, and came back and sat down at my computer and WHAM..............My heart was torn in pieces.

My heart is breaking for his fam and for the sport of running.

In some wierd way I would love to be out doing my favorite thing, biking/running/swimming or doing a maximum effort Ironman and go this way.............quick gone. Still SAD AND HEART BREAKING! I am just a fan and amateur athlete so I can't begin to imagine what his family and new wife is experiencing.

Very sad.

It's sad to see Shay in the prime of his life, having it taken away from him doing something he enjoyed.

That being said, I watched the ending of the trials and have to say I was quite impressed with the winner Ryan Hall. He torched the field with a 2:09:02 beating his PR by 3 minutes. He never ran a marathon prior to April of this year.

Tragic.
