Just watched the Bulldogs dismantle Montana. It wasn't even close. This years crop of Zags is so deep. They got this new kid Austin Daye out of Irvine, Ca. I think it is.Wow. This kid is sooooo talented. And Jeremy Pargo just keeps getting better and better every year. Throw in Mica Downs, and Jeremy Bouldin, and Larry Gerganious and Heytfelt, when he gets healthy, and I think this season could be incredible. The average height must be close to 7 feet this year. Most of the guys are HUGE! I am so excited by this years crop.....Heytfelt is going to have surgery on his foot Monday. May be out for 6 weeks now they say, but I am not to worried after looking at who is going to take over in his shoes......next up Idaho next Tuesday. Zags are now 39-1 in the new Kennel.....its gonna be some season I think! laugh.gif Got two top 15 teams within about 70 miles of each other now, Gonzaga at #14, and WSU just down the road at #10. Not too shabby.. smile.gif

I got tickets to see them play against UConn in Boston (Banknorth) Garden in 3 weeks. Sound's like it will be a good measuring stick for my Huskies on just how far they have to go. There are still doubts as to whether there will be significant improvement over last year's mess.
hockeyTom
Hey Chip, I will look for a report back from you with your impressions...good luck.
hockeyTom
I will give Idaho alot of credit, as in the first half, they lulled Gonzaga to sleep totally. It was pretty ugly, but by the second half, it was a completely different story as the Zags were much sharper, and into the game. The final score was totally lopsided by the end of the game. No double double this time for Austin Daye, but this kid is going to be something. John Stckton was in the house which was as usual, sold out, and he had to have been pleased to see the turnaround. I was. Heytfelt still out with his foot injury, unfortunately, as I fin dhim easy on the eyes... smile.gif

After another kind of ho hum first half, Gonzaga came out in the second half, and completely buried and totally dominated UC/Riverside last night. Another win by about 30 points. Abdullah Kuso had some interesting comments in my sports section this morning. He mentioned he thought the Zags kind of were Jekyll and Hyde like in the past 2 games, of which I agreed, and said they were looking for more consistency...the team is 3-0 and getting ready to head up to Alaska for the Great Alaska shootout, and the competetion gets a whole lot tougher from what I understand...had a post game interview with Austin Daye, the 19 year old freshman, who said he has been having a blast. The kid had a double/double effort in his first game at the Kennel, and has been adding around 20 points a game. He is going to be something! smile.gif laugh.gif
hockeyTom
Hats off to Western Kentucky who made Gonzaga work for their victory in Anchorage last night...I wish I could have seen the game but it was carried by ESPNU which Spokane does not get through Comcast. mad.gif
hockeyTom
It took OT to win it, but thats what the guys did back in Philadelphia against a gritty St. Joseph team. I guess Few challenged the team to step it up, and " willed" them to victory. Next up U-Conn Saturday in Boston. THAT should be something..... smile.gif
hockeyTom
Not a spectauclar victory today, but a win and some revenge against U-Conn...too bad Austin Daye didn't shine like he has here. He will soon!! A very long, tiring but successful road trip. Time to come home now... smile.gif

UConn played OK for them. They weren't as poised down the stretch and could have done a better job of preventing/contesting the three, though many where they were contesting also went in. The Zags had decent turnout crowd-wise.
hockeyTom
Well if my Bulldogs had to lose, I would rather they lose to the Washington State Cougars, which they did last night. The Cougs are the real deal, and Gonzaga loses at home for only the second time in the new Kennel...look out for WSU and Coach Bennett. They get a standing "O" from me....51-47 WSU over Gonzaga.
WSU Cougars
Gonzaga has some big games vs Gonzaga and Tennessee coming up.
hockeyTom
I think you meant Georgia, right? huh.gif Tonight the Zags finally return to the Kennel to take on Northern Colorado. The Georgia game is at the Spokane Arena, which should be a sellout if it isn't already.
hockeyTom
My somewhat beatup Zags tangle with Oklahoma this evening. I understand Heytfelt MAY play a few minutes, and Bouldin MAY as well....injuries have been adding up the past 2 weeks.... sad.gif
hockeyTom
Hopefully the Zags can make the game against Memphis tomorrow morning, entertaining at the very least....with luck it can be something like last year( very close) when they escaped here with a 1 point win over Gonzaga. I will go in with low expectations so anything beyond that is gravy.... smile.gif

Zags didn't do too bad vs the #1 team in the country. Heytvelt still is working on getting back into shape and Bouldin has to step up in the BIG games.
hockeyTom
No, they didn't. IF they would have gotten off to a better start, and IF Josh had been 100% healthy and Bouldin able to contribute a few more points, the outcome may have been different......
hockeyTom
Wow, what an incredible game played between Gonzaga/Santa Clara yesterday. Keep in mind this is the same team which beat the Zags in the Kennel last year to end their win streak, but this game took two overtimes for the Zags to win it, thanks to the heroic scoring of freshman Austin Daye and the game saving foul called on Santa Clara at the 3 second mark of regulation of which another freshman for Gonzaga, Gray makes two critical foul shots to tie the game up and send it into the first overtime, and from there it was Austin Dayes show. Gonzaga is still unbeaten now in the conference... smile.gif
hockeyTom
#24 St. Marys say they are ready to take on Gonzaga tonight from St. Marys. Going to be a very big game. Their building will be rockin.....Zags will have to be engaged from the first shot.....
hockeyTom
The Zags, #24, have won 8 consecutive WCC Championships now by defeating a pesky #25 St. Marys club the other night. Tonight they take on Santa Clara who is 1 of only 2 teams who have beaten Gonzaga in the Kennel, so the Zags should be plenty motivated tonight.....
hockeyTom
Gonzaga now #22, totally dominated Santa Clara last night 88-54, so now move on to the WCC Tournament in San Diego.
hockeyTom
Zags take on Santa Clara in the WCC tournament tonight. First time they destroyed them....hopefully they will start fast and not let up...
hockeyTom
Extremely ugly win for Gonzaga who didn't play all that well, and Santa Clara did. The standout for the Zags last night was Josh Heytvelt who appears to be coming out of his slump at the exact right time. So Zags take on San Diego who shocked and upset #23 ranked St. Marys last night in double overtime.

I don't watch Gonzaga a lot considering they normally play so late, but I was really impressed with their defense last night in the win against Santa Clara
WSU Cougars
Zags didn't show up in the WCC champ tourney game but I think they won't be a one and done in the ncaa tournament. GO ZAGS!
hockeyTom
Will be watchin this afternoon to see where my Zags and Cougs go. For Gonzaga to be successful in the tourney they will have to show alot more hunger than they did against San Diego in the WCC Tournament, thats for sure.
hockeyTom
Well so much for trying to keep the teams in the first round, somewhat close to home, as the Zags will essentially play Davidson, 150 miles away from Raleigh, in their own backyard at the RBC Center Friday morning. Its an intriguing matchup #7 against #10. Davidson has won 22 in a row, so they will provide tough competetion. I can't wait for this one. Zags will have to be alot sharper than they were against San Diego in the WCC tournament for sure.
MarcusF
Sorry Tom, but I look for my guys to take your Zags going away. We're sitting on a 22-game win streak, and the RBC is almost a home game. Bring on Georgetown! smile.gif
hockeyTom
Good luck to your team Marcus. I was surprised though that you guys are just 2 point favorites. It will be a battle of two similiar teams, and should be intriguing...but I gotta root for the home team. GO ZAGS!
hockeyTom
Interesting story this morning in my sports section. Turns out Stephen Curry of Davidson and Matt Bouldin of the Zags used to be roomates togther when they both played togther on an under 19 team....Curry has been texting Bouldin the past couple of days....can't wait for this game Friday.
WSU Cougars
I wasn't happy with Davidson beating Gonzaga but things happen I guess..geez!
hockeyTom
No Zag follower I know was either Wazzu, and considering they lead for 90% of th egame and blew an 11 point lead. But Curry could not be denied...
WSU Cougars
Not sure where this program is going in the future..but Bouldin has gone to be more consistent next year. Down needs to work on his ball handling so that he's more comfortable driving to the basket and trying to initiate contact.
hockeyTom
Zags were able to knock off Oklahoma last night down in Orlando at the Old Spice Classic. So next up this afternoon will be Maryland. From everything I have read and heard so far about the 08-09 team, this COULD, be the team that makes some serious noice of we make it to the Big Dance next March. The key will be for the big guns to stay healthy. And this includes that hottie Josh Heytfelt, and so far, they are all healthy.. Jeremy Pargo is saying he knows its now or never and he wants a championship banner to go up in the Kennel. As usual, Coach Few has loaded up the schedule with some SERIOUS opponents, and so far the Zags are delivering.....I for one, hope they keep it up!
hockeyTom
Thanks to continued balanced scoring from just about everybody, and led by Josh Heytvelt and Jeremy Pargo Gonzaga took the Old Spice Tournamnet in Orlando yesterday and beat Tennessee, who they will be playing again soon. If the team continues to play the way I have seen the play the last 3 games, in this tournament, they could have a very deep run next March. Hope so...
hockeyTom
Zags invade Wash. State this evening. Gonzaga now up to #4 ranking nationwide, and listed as a 2 point favorite tonight. Will be some battle in Pullman.
WChip
Zags put up a good fight against UConn and showed that UConn is by no means a powerhouse- at least not yet. They have LOTS of talent with some real inconsistent players, including Thabeet. If they can get people into rotations where they're working well together, they'll be a real hard out. The Zags have some great players- UConn was able to get a couple of their best off their game. That Price came up big is no surprise and hopefully signals the end of his tentative play following ACL surgery.
