BCS Championship

LSU vs. Ohio State

Orange Bowl

Virginia Tech vs. Kansas

Sugar Bowl

Georgia vs. Hawaii

Fiesta Bowl

WVU vs. Oklahoma

Rose Bowl

Illini vs. USC

I'll post the NON-BCS bowl games as they become available finalized later tonight.

On a side note, I'm estatic WVU's going to play Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl instead of playing the ACC champ in the Orange Bowl. There's not that much to gain beating the ACC champ in BCS bowl games. It's a no win situation.

Well I'm discussed about Ou and WVU playing each other but it's for personal reasons. So I'm going to skip bowl season this year and just enjoy X-mas break.

I tried to watch the BCS Selection Special yesterday. I turned the TV on at 5 (Pacific) and this is when I first noticed it was going to be a three hour show. Damn...the NCAA March Madness show is only one hour! So of course it ends up being segment after segment of talking heads with bits of information being meted out only after several commercial breaks.

Corso et al were giddy about the expected matchup of Ohio State-LSU. It's like they were relieved that after all was said and done, two big names ended up "qualifying" for the national championship. I think Corso said "These other teams like Missouri, West Virginia, Kansas, they can't handle the pressure of the spotlight and so they lose big games toward the end of the season."

Excuse me?

LSU lost their next-to-last game to an unranked team.

Ohio State lost their next-to-last game to a then-unranked team (and played in a very weak Big 10).

Oklahoma lost during November to an unranked team.

Va. Tech lost the last week in October to BC and by 41 earlier in the season to LSU. That's right folks the number 3 team in the Final BCS standings actually lost a game by 41 points.

USC has probably played the best ball recently, and even they lost to Stanford (!)

What do those teams have that Kansas, Missouri, West Virginia, and even Hawaii have not? They have the love of their big money fans and of the voters, that's what. In a topsy turvy year, the voters decided they could probably just vote whoever they wanted and leave it at that. Ohio State and Kansas finished with the same record, and who did Ohio State beat that was better than a Kansas opponent. Please don't say Michigan.

The BCS is a beauty contest, nothing more. Nothing was proven on the field, that's for sure.

Rant Over.

Rivals.com has provided a ranking of the best bowl match-ups, listed from worst to first:
http://collegefootball.rivals.com/content....&CID=746757

The bowls I'm most looking forward to:
1. LSU vs. Ohio State
2. Auburn vs. Clemson & Georgia vs. Hawaii
3. Florida vs. Michigan
4. Oklahoma vs. West Virginia
5. Mississipi State vs. University of Central Florida - although I'm extremely worried UCF is going to run all over Croom's team...

And lucky us up here in Toronto - for the second annual International Bowl - wil get Rutgers and Ball State.

Last year Cincinatti and especially Western Michigan brough up good crowd contingents resulting in attendance of almost 30,000. Anybody know if Rutgers and/or Ball State fans travel in decent numbers for a bowl appearance?

This is off topic, but I wish the bowls started earlier. No football on Saturday makes golfer a sad panda.

Depends...If Rutgers fans feel the stakes are worth it to make the trip to Toronto (about 9-10 hours from New Jersey) then they'll go. Unfortunately I don't see a lot of them making the trip this year - too far to go to see a game in a dome against a B-list opponent. BUT, I have a feeling a lot of undergrads might go just to experience the 19 year old drinking age tongue.gif

The bowl season began, fittingly this year, on a bizarre note. A botched call on the field and an error by the replay booth officials allowed Utah to defeat Navy by 3 points. It was a game-changing call that was critical.

A Ute player was attempting to score a TD late in the game, and tried like so many players do to extend the ball out to the goal line when he was actually a couple of yards away. The ball sailed out of his hands, through the air, and hit the pylon. This meant it should have been a touchback, and Navy would receive the ball at the 20-yard line. However, the officials on the field ruled the player out of bounds inside the 1 yard line even though he clearly didn't have possession of the ball. As the ESPN announcing crew lamented for a few minutes that the call would be overturned on review, thus awarding the ball to Navy, the officials came back and announced: "After review, the play on the field stands." Utah scored the game-winning touchdown on the next play.

Navy came back in a hurry in the final minute to score a TD to cut the lead to 3 points again, and even recovered an onside kick on the ensuing kickoff to have a final chance but it was too late. The refs made a critical error at a critical point of the game, giving Utah an additional 7 points.

According to ESPN, and in a somewhat uprecedented move, the officiating crew immediately after the game issued a statement saying they were wrong, and should have awarded the ball to Navy rather than giving Utah the ball inside the 1-yard line. But it was too late. Game over.

Not a good way to start the bowl season, but rather appropriate for this topsy turvy year.

Wasn't sure where to discuss the games, themselves ...this tight UCF/Miss State game has turned into something... I'm extremely very totally completely impressed by how Croom's Miss State team has been able to shut down the Central Florida run, which was my biiiig concern about the match up. Wow. Wooow. Can Miss State pull this off??? Will Miss St. parlay this into SEC success next season??!? Getting ahead of myself, I know...

Edited to add: Miss State wins. Awesome!

And West Va. does it, stays ahead of Oklahoma and earns the upset to create a potential rankings clusterfudge... The media is pimping USC pretty hard for the No. 1 ranking and there is even some chatter about Georgia's ranking. The bowls have thrown the final rankings into some measure of confusion, and if Va Tech and LSU both win... ouch, my head hurts.

Anywho, to my point at hand, CONGRATS to West Va. for an amazing performance and great rebound win!

Congratulations to the Mountaineers. The Mountaineer speedsters made the Oklahoma defense look very slow tonight. Good job West Virginia!! See guys, Pat White CAN throw downfield. After watching tonight's game, you have to wonder WTF Rodriguez was thinking when he took the air out of the ball against Pitt. And Jim Mountaineer, if you read this, looks like you got your wish (to throw out the bubble screen at WVA). I didn't see a single bubble screen tonight; the passing game was mostly vertical; not that WVA needed it though. Oklahoma couldn't stop the running game. Mountaineers will definitelty be ranked in the top five next year. Is Oklahoma deserving of its lofty ranking? I think so. They are a good team. I think Stoops let his team down tonight. He didn't have a good game plan. Seems like he decided to stack the line and force WVA to beat them through the air. The plan did not work. WVA ran on them anyway, and, Pat White burned them in man coverage. Stoops also made no half time adjustments. But to be fair, I don't know if there's anyhting he could have done to slow down Pat White. As I've said many times, is there really a workable defense for the spread option with a running QB? I haven't seen one. It's easy to stop the run and shoot; you just knock the hell out of the QB like Georgia did to Colt Brennan, but what do you do about a Spread Option with a slippery, quick footed, and talented QB like Pat White? If order to beat WVA, either they have to play poorly, as they did against Pitt, or, their opponent needs to gameplan their offense to match WVA on the scoreboard; and, that's not always easy to do. Thank God LSU doesn't have to deal with Pat White next week.

P.S. Was Slaton really hurt tonight? Didn't he take himself out of last year's bowl game too? It worked out well tonight. I think Devine is a better back anyway; he's faster, and, has more heart.
boomer400
Who knows what's going on with Slaton. There has to be some backstory that we don't know about, his drop in productivity has been unbelievable.
btccfan2002
Props to Wva. I expected Oklahoma to fully dominate - and boy was I surprised. Wva won it with their speed and trickery that Oklahoma really hadn't seen all year. Fun game to watch, good job Mountaineers!

Someone please feel my pain: I come home, tres-excited for Kansas vs. Va Tech (have no affiliation to either, mind you...), and my roommate has his girlfriend over, and ...they're watching... There's Something About Mary.

I don't mean to be ridiculous or stereotypical, but, ummm, can't I reasonably expect my straight roommate would have the college football game on? Or am I stereotyping? (It's not like he's not watched football before. Groan).

Off to a sports bar for me. No annoying train-of-thought posts from me til after the game!

SouthJock76
Hey The B Man,

I feel your pain. I don't care whether you are a huge football fan or not -- it's the freaking bowl season. There are no excuses to watch a ten year old movie with Ben Stiller over football.

Heck, a guy should watch the game if only so he can have a decent conversation around the water cooler at work the next day.

Hope you found a good bar.

Jason

THANKS SouthJock!

Re: tonight's game, gotta wonder if seeing the smack downs administered by USC and Georgia helped provide a bit more motivation to West Va. and Kansas... Knowing almost no one was giving them a chance and seeing two underdogs go down hard - could these sparks of inspiration made a difference for our last two victors?

Was meaning to post this earlier - but kudos to Rutgers fans who showed up in very good numbers to play a nobody opponent like Ball State in the International Bowl up here in Toronto this past Saturday. I went to the game with 3 friends and Rutgers fans completely filled the lower bowl on one side of the Rogers Centre and then were scattered in other sections too. And they were loud and boisterous and their band rocking all game long - which made for a great atmosphere at Rogers Centre. There had to be well over 10,000 of them up here for the game compared to maybe 3,000 Ball State fans. (And that may be generous).

Overall just under 32,000 attended the game - an increase of about 4,000 from last years first International Bowl which is good news for Bowl organizers. And the poor turnout from ball State was more than made up for by the Rutgers crowd and an encouraging larger turnout of local fans compared to last year.

I was at the game last year and there were around 28,000 that probably broke down as 8-9 thousand from Western Michigan, 5-6 thousand from Cincinnati and 12-13 thousand locals. This year it was something like 10-11 thousand Rutgers, 3,000 Ball state and well over 15,000 locals. (You could tell there were more of us from Toronto by the way we managed to match the volume of the Star Spangled Banner as sung by the American visitors, when O Canada was sung ;-)

Rutgers are going to be very hard pressed to replace their star running back Ray Rice who yesterday declared he is skipping his senior year and declared himself draft eligible. He romped for 280 yards on Saturday and set a number of school records in his time at Rutgers.
