Full Version: New Dallas Gay Sports Bar?

I was just told that what used to be Moby Dick's on Cedar Springs is now a gay sports bar called Woody's. Does anyone know if this is factual? If so, has anyone been yet?
Nascar007
I will have to check that out the next time I am in the Big D. I love the Tex-Mex restaurants in Dallas. My favorite is the Blue Goose Cantina on Greenville Ave.

check it out for us theo...

Theo, I heard the same thing. The people who bought Moby Dick's also bought BJ's and changed it's name to Mickey's. Haven't been down to Woody's yet. Might go this weekend to check it out.

Also, interesting teaser on the evening news promos about "revamping" Lower Greenville Ave.

Get out! How Cool would that be?

I for one certainly hope that the rumors are true. I was at Moby Dicks, before the Thanksgiving holiday and made a comment to one of the bartenders, (in front of the owner), and stated that the bar would certainly make a great sports bar for homosexuals interested in sports to have a place to "hang out" and be assured of some type of sporting event on the monitors. (They have tons of them!)

The owner has always been a great friend and supporter of the DFW sports teams, so it would not surprise me of the "rumored" venue.

About Greenville Avenue, revamping, well, residents have rejected any upgrading for mid-rise apartments, parking garages and retail spaces. So it is back to the drawing board for the developers and be back to the City with a revised proposal.

Lets hope we in the DFW area finally get a sports bar for all atheltic supporters to have.

Hot off their website. But no mention of Woody's being a sports bar.

Well looks like thats the website of the former owner so I doubt he'd advertise for them. A sports bar would be nice, but it would die a slow painful death on Cedar Springs. But I welcome anything that the coke sniffing former clientele of Moby's will avoid visiting.

Well guys, the rumor is true! I was in the Cedar Springs area Friday afternoon and sure enough, Moby Dick's is now Woody's Sports Bar. However, it was closed and they were make preparations for the grand opening later that evening so I didn't get to see what all had been done on the inside. This is a dream come true! I hope it has the support to stay and not be overrun by non-sports lovers, druggies, and those on the prowl.

Seems that one of you did not bother to log on to the old website, (assume nothing). The Owner, Howard of the Moby Dicks, on the old website, had posted a "thanks" for the memories letter and announcing the grand opening of "Woody's Sports Bar", along with helpful telephone contact numbers if anyone was interested in getting info on the new gay sports bar.

I was there on saturday night, not crowded, but not empty either. Had the Dallas Stars game on. Smoking is only allowed on the first (1st) floor and patio areas of the bar. The second floor is smoke free!!!! There are plenty of TV monitors and not a bad seat in the house. Unforunately or not, they only have access to Cable, so there choice of sporting events may be limited, at least for now. Hope they upgrade.
Theo
Angel, does Woody's serve food?

Maybe we (Dallas Outsportsters) should try another attempt at meeting up there since it's centrally located.
archangel54
Hey Mr. Theo:

No, there is no kitchen available, so they do not serve food. Though one of the bartenders mentioned that it would be ok to bring in your own munchies. He also said that they (bar staff) were thinking of having some type of snacks, food during the Super Bowl game.

I agree, we should try and get "Outsporters" out for a meet and greet outing during a sporting event.

Also, least we forget, log on to the OLD Moby Dicks website for the contact telephone numbers, to get additional information, maybe talk them into "sponsoring" and outing for Outsports. biggrin.gif

Hopefully more than just Theo would show up for an outing this time though, ha!

Okay guys, what's the interest level here for meeting up at Woody's to catch a Mavs, UT or Stars game?
MSUBulldog
I would have to pass guys. But I'll keep following your thread.

You can count me out. My partner is not into sports and I'm not into bars without him. Would've been fun about 20 years ago though! biggrin.gif

I will attend sporting events sans partner though.

Hey you know me..with some advance notice and during the week I can go most likely. The bf is not a sports person and I try to hang with him on weekends. But being he enjoyed being in Mobys maybe I can talk him into it one day if its a weekend.
Just let me know

This has become my gang's new hangout....we generally catch at least a couple of the mavericks games each week and on Friday's move over to Woody's as soon as everyone congregates first at JR's for HH.

We love the smoke free 2nd floor although they sometime keep really cold with the air conditioner running. Sports are great, prices are good and they finally took out those incredibly irritating pre measuring machines that Moby's thought were so wonderful.

Provided we can prove that a sports clientele will support the place, we are building our wish list including some of things noted above including dumping comcast for directv and NFL Sunday Ticket next season.

Saturday night's the mavs at 8:00 and we'll probably be on 2 when it starts.

Anyone want to have a Friday the 13th party next week? I will be free and probably hop down to Woodys to check it out.
Theo
BobDallas, I was probably there when you were on Saturday night. I came in for a bit during the game.
bobdallas
Theo....I'm sure we were....I'm always with the blond (and usually several others) at one of the bar corners.

Had planned to go last night for the mavs but decided to grab some tickets and go to the game instead. Ironically, the mavs have not lost a game that we have attended in person or watched at Woody's since the first of the year.

We were planning on going to LA Friday for a really queer weekend including a visit to the The Price is Right. However, with the NBA allstar game and I guess a PGA tournament somewhere close by, the cars and hotels were ridiculous so we're now planning on going there the weekend before baseball opening day. I assume we will be at Woody's friday as usual though maybe not as long since sports pickings look to be pretty slim.

Hey all, I just heard of a place called the Big Dog Sports Grill in Dallas on Beltline Road. They do serve food as well. The address is in Addison, which is north of Dallas. Has anyone been there? Is it worth a visit while in Dallas?

Never been to Big Dog, but there are a ton of sports bars and breweries and so forth in Addison now. I live in the area and theres just too many places to visit.

There are 3 breweries (BJs on Beltine, Humperdinks further down Beltline, and Two Rows on Dallas Parkway). Humperdinks is the most sports oriented of the 3.

There is Outer Marker on Keller Springs/Addison Rd. Kind of dead now but its new and small. There is Hooters (yeah I know, but think about the wings!). Vernon's on Beltline is home to all the Packers games. I think there is also another place close to Big Dog.

Spent a few hours at Woodys the eve of the 13th. Interesting place. Never thought Id see Sportscenter on a screen next to some music videos and porn scenes. The barback even gave us a nice Beyonce booty shake a few times.

Pretty dead though since all your native Texans were scared of the impending snow that didnt even start until 2am. But I had a good time!
DallasUNC
Wonder if anyone has any interest in an Outsports party at Woodys in the future? Odd that there are 100 something people in Dallas in the Clubhouse on here and only 5-10 of us ever post anything. Would be some good publicity for Jim & Cyd if we did have one. I plan on going to Woodys again sometime regardless, even though Im not a big bar person.

And what were they measuring, pray tell? wink eek! tongue.gif
bobdallas
They measured the drinks to insure that only one true shot was given in a drink. It was nifty little plug that attached to the tip of the liquor bottle and prevented anything more than 1 measured shot to come out.

Many years ago, the place was a piano bar and they actually tried a new system where the cash register automatically rang up well, call, premium etc prices depending on the size tip that was on the poured liquor bottle. Apparently it was not very reliable so they ditched it and just kept the measuring portion of it.
DallasUNC
Maybe thats why Mobys is no more. I had more than a few bartenders put more than one shot in my drink. I swear one drink looked and tasted more like it should have fueled my car smile.gif

Either way, Woodys should be a good change.

Wow! I found a pic of my friend and former roomie Russell on the now-gone Moby Dick website. I wish he'd move back to Austin. Anyone who goes to Woody's, please find Russell (he's one of the bartenders) and tell him that Bobby wants him to move back to Austin! smile.gif He's on the left in this photo...

I wouldnt swear to it, but he might not be bartending there anymore. All the bartenders Ive seen are fairly new.

They do have a website now which I saw advertised on their ad board at the bar last night.

Dallas Woody's

Was a good crowd there up until midnight last evening!

Well, that little shit! We keep missing one another's phone calls. His cell phone is almost always off and I have to leave messages and he usually calls me when I am aways from home and doesn't call my cell phone. Maybe something is up and that explains all of this distance he's creating between us. Hummmmm.

Sounds like the last guy I "dated" (if two dates count as "dating" ... OK, I'll take the thunderous laughter as a no). rolleyes.gif

I spoke with my bud Russell over the weekend and he does still work at Woody's. So, if you spot him, tell him I want him want back in Austin. smile.gif
