angel pagan is having a great spring. i don't know if he could be an everyday player, but he could be the starting LFer on opening day.
i'm not sure about nady. his bat has some pop, but he's a butcher on the OF.
i have no tickets for opening day. i'll probably try stubhub.
i'll miss that dump stadium.

I'll miss Shea also. I have some great memories of that place.
Angel Pagan is having a great spring. If not an everyday player, he can definitely be the other alternate outfielder with Endy. Is he right-handed? If so, then he can be the right-handed hitter we need, and use Marlon Anderson to back up Carlos Delgado if he gets hurt again? It could work, as a last resort...

JUPITER, Fla. - Baseball's All-Star Game is coming to Queens. The Mets' new ballpark, Citi Field, will host the Midsummer Classic, probably in 2013.
"We were informed by the commissioner that after moving into Citi Field, we would have an All-Star Game, but no date has been set," Mets spokesman Jay Horwitz said Thursday.
A baseball official confirmed that 2013 is the likely year for Citi Field to host the game. It would be the second in Mets history; then-brand new Shea Stadium was the site of the 1964 game.

Pedro finally pitched in a real Grapefruit League game today. 4 shutout innings and only 57 pitches. The second inning was rough, but overall an excellent effort.

QUOTE(jerseyguy @ Feb 26 2008, 09:00 AM)

There are definitely lots of fond memories of Shea, but its time has passed. The place is a dump and that fact hits you the second you walk thru the turnstile. I believe it's the 4th oldest park in the majors and unlike Fenway or Wrigley, Shea has absolutely no charm. Personally, I can't wait for the new park to open.
A lot of people in Washington, players and fans alike, have the same feelings towards RFK - a dump with no charm whatsoever. I agree with MetsfanChi, too, about cringing over the corporate naming of parks. I like how Baltimore has Orioles Park at Camden Yards. Maybe Washington can have Nationals Park at (Corporate) Fields, or Nationals Field at (Corporate) Park, and the same for Shea? Personally, I love the name Nationals Park and hope that they can somehow retain that. But you're right, it truly is a double-edged sword.
Can't one argue, too, that Wrigley Field was the first truly corporate field?

I mentioned that a while back
in a blog item.. It was renamed Wrigley Field for William Wrigley Jr., who owned the team at the time. Sure, the family had the gum company but I don't think they ever used the gum logos or images in the park and I don't think the company paid to have the park renamed Wrigley Field. All the parks now with corporate names have the logos all over the place.

for one..i wish MLB would switch Baltimore and Washington into the NL and AL respectively. Believe it or not, Washington and Florida always have young scrappy teams with decent pitching, but a lot of inexperience. Baltimore and Tampa Bay and for the most part Toronto just suck ass. Why should the skanks get the easier division year in and year out so they can claim the fraudulent greatness by beating the loser teams all the time..
also, tonight's game is a classic example of things that annoy me...
please tell me why Wagner wasn't pitching the 10th? Because we didn't have a lead? BFD. I mean the important stat is the Mets getting a W. We needed out best pitcher out there to start the extra frames, in the hope that the offense put one on the board. Stupid to save wagner....cause we never got to use him...

who's surprised about Pedro? not me. They should've won the East with very little from him last year. Let's face it, in retrospect the signing was mostly a PR move, the Red Sox were smart to let him walk.
josh, if any manager breaks decisively with the idiotic can't-use-closer-in-a-tie crap it sure ain't gonna be Randolph. (Notice that managers DO break with it in postseason, cuz it's OBVIOUSLY the thing to do.)

So I'm not bitching too much about a 13-0 win...but...
Randolph won't use Wagner in the bottom of the 10th inning of a tie game that we fought hard back to tie up, and instead uses the shittiest reliever in the bullpen...BUT..
he DOES use Wagner in the bottom of the 9th of a 13-0 blowout?? Did he really think that anyone else in that pen was going to give up 13 runs to the Marlins?
I really really wish I could ask him that question...it completely and totally defies logic

Except for not using Wags in the second game, Willie has looked pretty good in managing the pen so far, in my opinion. Although only using Schoeneweis for one lefty batter and then immediately yanking him should be obvious to everyone with eyes.

It's hard not to. when you lost the division to a second rate team by only one game you feel compelled to think about all those games you could have won..
that one game in april that we should have won (game #2) by using wagner more appropriately might loom large come sept.

20/20 hindsight, he should've used wagner in a tie game.
BUT, i don't really trust wagner in tie games. same reason wagner didn't pitch in game 7 of NLCS.

mets57
Apr 3 2008, 11:09 PM
yeah, i wish the mets didn't choke and phillies won it.
but i can't change history.
phillies '07 weren't an elite team. they were in fact the lucky winners courtesy of a mets collapse.
Joe in Philly
Apr 4 2008, 12:26 AM
I'll repeat this again so maybe you can comprehend: if the Phillies didn't win their games it wouldn't have mattered how many games the Mets lost. Finishing the season winning 13 of 17 isn't being lucky.
And if the Mets would've won just one of those last 7 games against the Phillies, the Mets still would've won the division anyway.
mets57
Apr 4 2008, 12:38 AM
oh please, phillies needed the mets to collapse.
13 of 17 won't mean squat if the mets didn't choke.
but honestly, who cares. the division title is all that matters.
