Cleveland Browns quarterback Brady Quinn was part of a group of men shouting insults at gay passers-by outside a Columbus bar early on New Year's Day, according to a 9-1-1 call made to police.

The call at 2:35 a.m. came from Seth Harris, who reported that he encountered the group in front of La Fogata Grill at 790 North High St. The Mexican restaurant is next door to the Union Café Bar + Food, one of Columbus' most popular gay bars in the gay-friendly Short North neighborhood.

On the 9-1-1 call, Harris said that "Brady Quinn from the Browns" was "trying to cause a fight." Harris told the operator, "I just walked outside and he exchanged many profanities with me and called me a faggot, of course."

he might have been a victim of circumstance; then again, maybe not

Ah you beat me over here, I was just getting ready to post this. tongue.gif

And really, are we surprised? Brady was a rookie in a hyper-macho league where he was probably teased mercilessly about having gay fans. It's no wonder he went and did this to "prove" how manly he is.

I was reading the Cleveland Plain Dealer and there is already a blame the victim sentiment.

That is what I really hate about straight bigots. Gay men don't go to straight places and harass people. From the article the confrontation lasted quite a while. What is the point of hanging out in a parking lot and calling people queer?

I am a Steeler fan so it is easy for me to hate the Browns. I was a Quinn fan, but no longer.

And Quinn was with 10 males friends? Perhaps the man does protest too much.

Studies have shown that the most homophobic are the ones who hate that aspect of themselves. Quinn really needs to come out with a sincere apology if he wants to salvage his rep; this makes him look really bad.

Isn't that charming. I also love how the gay bashee gets arrested and not the bashers.

Something about this story doesn't ring true. Take a look at the quotes from the accuser: "I just walked outside and [Brady Quinn] exchanged many profanities with me and called me a faggot, of course." And then later in the story, the accuser says, "[Quinn] was standing back and letting his friends do most of it," and "This has been going on all night and nobody has stopped anything."

So which is it? Was Quinn the one calling him a faggot, or was it Quinn's friends? And are we supposed to believe Quinn was standing outside a gay bar "all night" as the accuser suggests and calling this one guy a faggot?

Like I said, the story doesn't ring true.

QUINN ACCUSED OF TAUNTING GAYS

Quarterback Brady Quinn made no headlines on the football field in 2007. He's now making headlines for something he allegedly did on the first day of 2008.

According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Quinn was accused in a 911 call made on New Year's Day of shouting insults at a group of passersby outside of a gay bar in Columbus, Ohio.

A man named Seth Harris placed the call after encountering a group including Quinn. Harris told the operator that "Brady Quinn from the Browns" was "trying to cause a fight. I just walked outside and he exchanged many profanities with me and called me a faggot, of course."

Police responded to the scene, Quinn and friends were present.

"When we got there, he was very cooperative and just stopped," said Columbus police spokeswoman Amanda Ford. "I think his friends were like, 'Let's get out of here.'"

Hmmm. But why would Brady Quinn and his buddies be hanging out in the "gay-friendly Short North neighborhood"?

Oh. Never mind.

In the interest of fairness, it is worth noting that Quinn has categorically denied these allegations, that the police arrested the complainant when they arrived because he was out of control and that the alleged victim pled guilty to disorderly conduct. In short, I think it is worth withholding judgment on these types of stories about celebrities until we know the facts. Lots of people are out there looking to make a name or a buck by making accusations against people with money.

QUINN DENIES INCIDENT OUTSIDE GAY BAR

Browns quarterback Brady Quinn claims that he wasn't involved in a New Year's Day incident involving alleged taunts to patrons of a gay bar in Columbus, Ohio.

"At no time that night was I involved in a verbal or physical altercation, nor did I have any interaction with the police," Quinn said in a statement issued by the team. "I want to be clear that I did not engage in any of the alleged conduct, nor did I make inappropriate comments to anyone. Any allegations to the contrary are either untrue or the result of misidentification."

But the report in the Cleveland Plain Dealer wasn't based solely on the 911 call placed to police; a Columbus police spokesperson says that, when officers arrived, Quinn was involved in an argument with a man who later was arrested.

The statement also points out that Quinn had dinner on New Year's Eve with his girlfriend. Girlfriend. As in, "I'm neither gay nor curious."

And the guy stood there "all night" and took it?

I don't know what happened. I wouldn't be surprised if it happened or if it didn't. Maybe some video will show up on TMZ.

It amazes me how quick everyone is to judge and to condemn. Hasn't anyone learned from the lacrosse/stripper scandal? Are drunken overly aggressive accusers supposed to be believed at face value just because they're gay? Famous athletes and celebrities are accused of stuff all the time because it's a great way to get attention and sometimes a great way to get some $$$$. Immediately condemning Brady Quinn based on this kind of incomplete reporting is totally irresponsible.

THe "victim" pled guilty http://www.fcmcclerk.com/pa/pa.urd/pamw200...ase_sum?3592860

Then -- six weeks later -- screams hate crime to the press -- through his lawyer of course. If you are fair-minded, something doesnt sound right. But, if you are one of these people who takes an irrational dislike to some celeb you dont really know and want to believe anything bad about him, it is time to get out the rope.
Falconpride
kattt111 alluded to this, but if the incident occurred on New Years' Day, why did the press only pick up on it this week? Seems like this would be a newsworthy item right after it happened. Now it seems like, "Okay...???"

Cleveland signs Jake Delhomme and trades Brady Quinn to the Broncos.
