Sadly, Brett Favre has decided to retire after 17 seasons. Brett you will be missed! sad.gif
CycloneMatt
sad.gif There goes my real reason for paying attention to the NFL... I'm totally bummed.

Well favre was indeed a great player. But I am not going to miss him or at least won't miss the endless salad-tossing that so many in the media did. And I'm not going to miss the annual "Will He or Won't He Retire" diva drama.

The timing of this is so very curious. The morning after it's announced that Randy Moss, who Favre desperately wanted as a Packer, he announces his retirement. The receivers he had last year got him to within one game of the Super Bowl. And if not for HIS ill-advised, bad interception, the Packers probably beat the Giants. Seems like a bit of a slam against the current Packer WRs if Favre decided to pack it in because they didn't get Moss.

This is probably as good a time as any for the Packers to move on though. It had to happen sooner or later. And given the good team they have right now, it's better than throwing Aaron Rogers in there after the team becomes depleted.

Honestly though I wouldn't doubt he is pulling a Strahan. I'll believe Favre is retired when he doesn't come running out of the tunnel for their first game.
Joe in Philly
Upon reflection, I think I will miss the "will-he-or-won't-he" retirement drama. We still have Roger Clemens, but with his situation it's not the same any more. smile.gif

I totally agree!!!

In typical Favre Diva fashion, despite announcing his retirement 3 weeks ago, Favre still has not filed the papers meaning the Packers will not get the extra cap space until he does.
Joe in Philly
Thanks for keeping up the diva act, Brett! Now if we can only get Clemens to talk more about pitching this year... laugh.gif
Joe in Philly
Diva Favre continues to hint at un-retirement. Shocking! laugh.gif

“It would be hard to pass up, I guess,” he told the Biloxi (Miss.) Sun Herald. “But three months from now, say that presents itself, I may say, you know what, I’m so glad I made that decision. I’m feel very comfortable in what I’m doing and my decision.

“Yeah, I can probably be up there doing that and playing, but again, I don’t know. It’s only speculating. I think the world of that team. I had a lot of fun, not only this year, but over my career.”

But if Aaron Rodgers went down with an injury?

“Aaron has fallen into a great situation,” Favre said. “And if that opportunity presented itself and they did call, it would be tempting. And I very well could be enticed do it.”

What a drama queen!!! Sheesh!!
George Twins fan
Drama queen indeed. ESPN's Chris Mortensen has reported that favre is considering a comeback.
George Twins fan
Now Chris Mortnesen is reporting that favre has asked the Packers for his unconditional release, which would allow him to sign with another team.

So if the Packers don't take the bait and take him back, there are a number of teams that need a QB...Dolphins, Falcons, Vikings, Ravens..and of course the Bears. Can anyone imagine Favre in a Bears uni?

If Favre doesn't agree to stay retired, I'd either work out an acceptable trade, or make him the 3rd-string QB. Make him sit around and be miserable. The way he's handled all of this is a disgrace. The Packers can't win no matter what they do. Either they let him go somewhere else, which will surely anger the fans, or he returns to Green Bay and screws Aaron Rodgers and the team -- again.

No need to worry, Joe; Favre is asking to be released from his contract. I think the Packers organization handled this with class and finally sending Favre the message that he can't keep screwing them around. You don't decide three weeks before training camp that you want to come back. I don't think Favre would have looked quite as selfish if he had decided this before the draft. I just hope the fans aren't too blinded by the whole situation to take it out on the team and on Aaron Rodgers. rolleyes.gif
Joe in Philly
And what if Favre got his release and then signed with the Bears or Vikings? They can't allow that to happen.
phillyrunner
I would think a trade is the only thing that makes sense. If they release him outright he goes to the team of his choice and the Packers get nothing in return. If they let him play 3rd string QB to make him miserable then they have to pay him 12 million dollars for doing nothing. On that note, wouldn't there be salary cap issues assuming they already spent the 12 million on other players?
Joe in Philly
Well, yeah, there would be salary cap issues. If I were Green Bay, though, I'd figure out a way. There's just no way I'd let him get away with this.

They're not letting him get away with this, as they're not releasing him from his contract. I think the Packers are doing the right thing, even from a PR standpoint. They don't want to get screwed. I have a feeling that they will trade him, but the only question is to where?
mdterp01
OMG...I'm so sick of this guy and this story its not even funny. What drama. This is like a soap. I want to retire. I don't want to retire. IPB Image

Lady Brett breaks his silence in an interview that will air tonight with.....Greta Van Susteren on FOX freakin' News! blink.gif WTF?

Turns out Greta hails from Wisconsin and is a Packers shareholder!
hockeyTom
Agreed. Favre is a drama Papa, opposite of drama Mama... rolleyes.gif
Joe in Philly
This has gone way beyond absurd. They're reporting that Favre has reserved a chartered plane to take him from Mississippi to Green Bay this evening in case he decided to show up at the Packers' training camp, but he's waiting to hear from the commissioner, who hasn't yet reinstated him and supposedly wants to speak to Favre first. The Packers have reportedly offered Favre up to $20 million to stay retired, but are now finally considering trying to work out a trade with the Vikings or Bears, after saying they wouldn't trade Favre to a division opponent.

I don't know what the commissioner can actually do -- there's no way he can't keep Favre from un-retiring -- but I'd do my best to make sure that Favre isn't allowed to play for the Vikings, considering their apparent tampering in the situation. Or I'd make the Vikings give up at least two first-round draft picks -- one going to Green Bay and one forfeited as punishment for tampering.

If Favre wants to play so badly why is he mulling over the $20 million dollar deal? He seems like an egomaniac.

Why not, 3 MVPs make a franchise player ego maniac with stats to back it up, besides this is a real slow news period for sports so noobs have to have something to talk about.
Favre, while a bit too chuch going for me still gots the moves to make him more of a papi than a drama mama. Guess we will see tomorrow at 1?
George Twins fan
So Favre is on his way to Green Bay and will arrive sometime late this afternoon. ESPN News is covering this like the news channels cover Santa's flight from the North Pole on Christmas Eve.

And I couldn't care less...... rolleyes.gif

Bill Russell achieved the following:

11x NBA Champion; 5x NBA MVP; 12x NBA All-Star; 3x All-NBA First Team Selection; 8x All-NBA Second Team Selection; 1x NBA All-Defensive First Team Selection; 1x NBA All-Star Game MVP; NBA's 50th Anniversary All-Time Team; NBA 35th Anniversary Team; NBA 25th Anniversary Team.

And he is still classy, not an egomaniac. Tearing a team apart because you feel you deserve to is not cool.

Also I don't get what being "Papi" or "Mama" has to do with anything; a lot of the "Papis" I know cheat on and hit their women. We came from our mothers and are oppressed because people think gay men "act like girls". We should show women the utmost respect because that's why we ended up here. They could have swallowed us, you know. tongue.gif

The person getting screwed in this game of "Chicken" between Brett and the Packers is Aaron Rodgers. It's really a lose-lose situation for him. If the Packers can't trade Favre or find a way to make him stay away (which doesn't look likely after being chauffeured around by the team he's screwing) then Rodgers has to keep looking over his shoulder, after he was promised the job. Even though he has five months of training over Favre, I highly doubt the Packers will pay Favre that much to stay on the bench for the season. However, if Favre decides to blink first and take his drama with him, then Rodgers will have to deal with the scrutiny of both the fans and media, a la Steve Young and Joe Montana.

Even though I had previously defended Favre when he kept up his pattern of indecisiveness, I have lost ALL respect for him. That doesn't detract from his on-field accomplishments, but rather my overall opinion of his character. I understand that Brett's identity is to be a premier NFL quarterback, and it's hard to let that go, but he hasn't taken into account the damage this might do to Rodgers and the team that he claims to love. The Packers are also playing hardball, which is their right. But, like Favre, they need to assess what damage this is doing to the team's reputation and cohesiveness. One side has to deflate their ego, put their pecker away and make a move that serves the best interests of everyone.

I have always loved Brett Favre- body & soul, but this on-off again crap is trying my patience. blink.gif

Same here. I'm tired of the drama and ESPN covering the story like Extra in addition to their analysis of potential direct influence on the game.

ESPN is claiming that a trade is imminent with the most likely destination being Tampa Bay. Maybe this will finally be over as soon as tonight!

I hope so because I'm sick of it. I wasn't a Brette Favre fan before and I'm really sick of this whole, drawn out friggin drama. Its so ridiculous.

ESPN has just reported that Farve has finally been traded to the JETS. Let's hope that life under the Big Top finally comes to an end so the station can focus on the rest of the NFL.

Ugh! Now, living in New York, I'll have to be exposed to him 16 times a year. Is it wrong for me to hope for a Theismann-like injury in week 1?
hockeyTom
The Favre soap opera now picks back up again, only now it takes place in a Jets uniform......
santana57
of course he'll get more media coverage in NY.

what a f**king attention whore.

should help the jets win some games though. smile.gif
Joe in Philly
I don't know if the NFL Network report that the Jets would owe Green Bay 3 first round picks if they trade him to the Vikings is true, but I'm happy he ended up somewhere other than Minnesota. And I'm happy for Aaron Rodgers. He didn't deserve to be part of this farce.

If you mean a hot mess, then I totally agree. I didn't have much of an opinion of Favre or the Packers, but after all this drama, I'm a bit peeved at La Favre. Why couldn't he have just retired and gone gently into that good night instead of turning into Joan Collins in boxy, shoulder padded dress from the 80s?

(yeah, I have no idea where that came from...)

yea, Deion Sanders and Michael Jordan just not the athletes that they once were thought of because they couldn't let go... well maybe in your mind.

calm down no one is disrespecting your women.

Players should have a chance to shake down the owners for a change in the NFL. And yes I know that Packers are publicly owned but it should apply to all NFL owners, believe me I think that they can afford it player contract negotiations would only benefit.
