Unfortunately it is only on the weekend that I have time to read the inspiring autobiographical special interest stories often posted on Outsports.
I'm glad I finally got around to this one.
I hope Carney realizes though that despite not having gay role models there are a lot of athletes in his field who have lived with being different who could be role models. Joey Cheek and his competitor Shani Davis are two that come to mind.
Cheek is one of the few Olympic athletes whose non-athletic accomplishments and drive I admire, not to mention his intellectual curiosity which makes him very different from most athletes at his level. And Davis faced the same odds that every African-American male faces throughout his life, but rarely faced by an Olympic skater.
Both showed qualities that are worthy of emulation - imperfect though they surely are, as all of us are - and they don't have to be gay or perfect for their good qualities and accomplishments to be worth that emulation.
