wow......4 players charged with battery in a fight outside a bar. (and none of them old enough to be in the bar)

.....and last month 3 more players were dismissed for felony possession of marijuana with intent to deliver......more great examples of the kind of "quality" playing for WVU.

Devine, 3 other West Virginia players plead no contest to battery

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — Four West Virginia University players have pleaded no contest to battery charges stemming from an altercation outside a bar.
Running back Noel Devine, 20; defensive back Eain Smith, 19; cornerback Brantwon Bowser, 20; and running back/receiver Jockee Sanders, 19, were arrested Thursday, the Morgantown Police Department said in a news release.

Each player pleaded no contest to battery, a misdemeanor, in Morgantown Municipal Court, the police department said.

It was not immediately known whether the municipal court assessed any penalties against any of the players. A telephone message left Thursday night with the municipal court was not immediately returned.

Police said the charges stemmed from an altercation outside Club Z in Morgantown on Feb. 16 but did not provide details.

"Discipline with the situation has already been handled within the program," WVU football coach Bill Stewart said through a spokesman. He said he would have no further comment.

Last month, Stewart dismissed three other players charged with felony possession of marijuana with the intent to deliver.

West Virginia begins spring practice Friday.

Devine, a freshman, ran for 108 yards and two touchdowns in West Virginia's 48-28 Fiesta Bowl victory over Oklahoma.

Noel Devine? Uh oh...

Noel Devine? Isn't he already the de facto Heisman winner next year on the de facto National Championship team next season?

The dismissal of the first group of players was exactly what Coach Stewart needed to do. This was a hangover from RR's lack of control over players and the program. There is no room for this type of behavior at a program like WVU- especially a program that's never had issues off the field until recently and one that's generally considered one of the most ethical athletic programs in college athletics.

Regarding the 4 players arrested for the bar fight, word on the street is the " victims" were running the mouth and instigated the fight and even followed the football players outside yelling at them outside the club. What's comical is these little frat boys act like they were beaten, yet there was no bruises, cuts, and any time of marks on the "victims". Let's think about this. Four elite college football players who are in outstanding physical shape allegedly attack a couple normal college students, yet these victims are void of physical marks that one would assume that came from this alleged " beatdown".

While I don't condone the physical response to loudmouth punks, I hardly see this altercation any more than a typical college aged gathering of two groups of guys who got caught up in a moment with some punks running their mouth and with football players rough housing them for their actions. I've certainly been in that situation back in the day and a time or two I put some punks in their place for stepping out of line.

No Harm No Foul.

Coach Stewart has handled this in house and aside from the non football player victims egos being damaged and feeling the need to escalate this to the police, it hardly registers on the radar screen as important.

Good point.

That's the beneift of playing for a national contender on a yearly basis.

I've got your back on this one Derby.

Those type of altercations are a mainstay of college life. At Bowling Green State University (Go Falcons) I'd go out with my rugby roomies (they were rugby, I was hockey) and we couldn't go out to the bars without someone trying to pick a fight with them. 99 times out of 100 it was left to verbal barbs and we would go home and wake up with hangovers. But occasionally it would become physical. Some guys just need to pull out their penises (metaphorically) and show it to their girlfriends or chums every chance they get. Who better to whip it out against than the "campus gods"?

I don't condone bar fights but it's hardly a knock on character. Let the team and the university handle this and save the nooses for something a little more damning.

Well it seems DickRod and his cronies are being cornered for their initial allegations that WVU is a racist institution.

The person ( a WVU official who is African American) they alleged made the comments former WVU Offensive cordinator ( who is African American) Calvin McGee wouldn't be the new WVU football coach because of his skin color has denied he ever made the remarks. He states the only discussion he had was that he was happy to see WVU contact the BCA ( Black Coaches Association) about possible candidates to McGee. The bottom line is McGee was not considered for the position because the day RR was annonced as Michigan coach McGee was at the press conference in Ann Arbor and already named an assistant coach at Michigan just 2 days afer RR resigned. That's the bottom line. This is and has always been a ploy by RR"s camp and his slimy agent to attack WVU.

It's comical to see this story come to light now and RR's camp cornered. Of course, ESPN will put in headlines on the front page RR's accusations WVU is racist, but of course they won't report on the truth of this story now that it's come full circle.

Looks as if WVU is going to go for blood for RR's lies.

You have to read this to believe it. Testimony from all sides. It seems RR and his agent are backed into a corner.

People suggest WVU fans need to let it go, but were WVU fans the one that accused WVU of being a racist institution?

RichRod has been on ESPN crying about WVU since day one he accepted the WVU job to paint WVU in a bad light to escape paying the 4 million dollor buyout contract he signed, yet he states WVU needs to get over him. Yet, he makes all kinds of ridiculous assertions using ESPN and Pittsburgh newspapers. Now that the truth has come out, he wants all this to go away.

I am sorry Dickrod. When you make serious allegations and state you are receiving death threats there will be investigations. Now that evidence shows you and your idiot agent were lying and fabricating events to paint a pciture as WVU being a rogue instiution, you want this to simply go away.

I am sorry. It doesn't work that way.

I wonder if WVU fans will keep up this vendetta through the start of the season.
wvderby
I wonder if it were you institution that was owed 4 milllion dollars plus, accused of being r, accused of being unethical, had 6-8 stories reporting the events on ESPN.com favoring Richrod and his VENDETTA, and 2-3 TV interviews of him crying over fabricated death threats, would you act accordingly. My guess is you would be a little bitch far more than what I have reported on here.

Just a hunch.

4 million dollars is .02% of the endowment of my school, so no, I don't think anyone would get all that worked up. In fact, we would probably thank our lucky stars that such an (apparently) unsavory character was no longer running our football program. Just let it go.

It's a miniscule of WVU's endowment as well and NO we won't let it go. He owes the money and he needs to pay especially after the unethical behavior and cowardly act of him and his cronies.

Your input is appreciated, but it's derived from the bleachers in left field. Ever get in the ball game?

Fine, so you wish Rodriguez handled everything better and showed more respect to the University and to West Virginia. Now be the better man, or fans, and take the high road. Instead of getting all hot and bothered, you should be happy Rodriguez made your program matter. You should be happy that West Virginia football is such a big deal. You should be happy at all the fun memories you had when he was the head man. You should realize that this is big business and that your company lost its CEO and replaced him with another good one who should be able to keep the train rolling. You should wish Rodriguez well at Michigan, because for better or worse, he still represents you. You should let it all go and enjoy what should be a fantastic 2008 season.

WVU Foundation report

$4 million is nothing to sneeze at, unless you're one of the Ivy schools or Stanford

the WVU Foundation has assets of $670 million and an endowment of $350 million

I can proudly say that about $5000 of that endowment has come from me for GLBT themed books for the WVU Libraries

Wow...I didn't realize your endowment stretched clear across the country! Nice going! biggrin.gif

I read this and even had a heated email exchange with the football challenged author of this article. His points to myself and other WVU fans were grade school ( which I am sure you and many on this board can relate to) and heavily biased. Most comical, is now the allegations favor WVU and show WVU in a positive light as RR's cronies, agents, and supporters look borderline retarded.

I just wanted to ask the faithful if they think this Mike Garrison (WVU President) scandal over awarding the West Virginia Governor's daughter an unearned MBA will bring closure to the RR fiasco inadvertently through distraction?

It seems to me if the governor really supports Garrison, he would ask his daughter to tear up the degree and go back and earn it.

an educational scandal outshine a sports scandal?

never!

and Garrison should resign immediately

there's talk about having future presidents of WVU chosen by the faculty senate and not these "elite" search committees

LOL@ Rich Rod's attornies

Check out this exchange between WVU athletic director Ed Pastilong and RichRod's struggling attornies:

Concerning why WVU would not allow Richrod to have sole control over all monies collected by his personal website using WVU's athletic name:

At one point Pastilong testified that Texas A&M had a problem when its football coach was given his own Web site, leading to his dismissal.

“You mean Bobby Knight?” Robon asked.

Bobby Knight? He was a basketball coach. Latest stop at Texas Tech, not A&M. And he was fired at Indiana.

And finally there was this question from Robon:

“Do people blame Mike Parsons for Bobby Huggins leaving?”

When he was corrected and told that Huggins was the current coach, Robon dug himself in deeper.

“Attempt to leave?” he asked.

Exasperated, Pastilong simply said that Huggins was the coach at present and “I don’t know of any attempts for him trying to leave.”

Next question.
