Peter Graves pretty much had a B-list career, strarring in alot of pretty schlocky sci-fi movies in the 50s, several of which were lampooned on Mystery Science Theater 3000. But I loved the fact that he had such a great sense of humor about it. But I LOVED Mission Impossible! And his role in Airplane (one of the funniest movies ever made, IMHO) is legendary!

Do you like movies about gladiators? Have you ever seen a grown man naked?

I'm sure a lot of people have not heard of this man, but he is an inspiration to me. I struggle a great deal with my Catholic faith. I can no more deny it, than I can deny being a gay man. It is increasingly hard, however, to practice my faith in a church which casts me aside seemingly at every turn. Just when I think I can stand no more, there comes along the witness of a person such as this man. I was educated by the Jesuits, and this man represented the true meaning of being a man for others.

John Forsythe, best known as Blake Carrington on Dynasty and the voice of Charlie on Charlie's Angels, died today at the age of 92.

Article on the death of John Forsythe

'Dynasty' actor John Forsythe dies at 92

I loved Dynasty and it must have been an early clue for my mother since I was born in '78. I just loved all that glitz and glamour and shoulder pads and I think that Blake was such a great patriarch of the family. What a loss. R.I.P.
canmark
Although I was a fan of John Forsythe as Blake Carrington on Dynasty, I'll always remember him as the voice of Charlie on Charlie's Angels. Here's the pilot episode.

Edit to add: was just reading that John Forsythe was nominated for an Emmy for 3 consecutive years for the role of Blake Carrington on Dynasty, but lost out to "Daniel J. Travanti of "Hill Street Blues" in 1982, Ed Flanders of "St. Elsewhere" in 1983 and Tom Selleck of "Mangum, P.I." in 1984." He did, however, win the Golden Globe in 1983 and 1984 for Best Actor, TV drama.

Add another one to the list....the Carrington family got a bit smaller. sad.gif

John Forsythe dead at 92

Actor John Forsythe died Thursday of complications from pneumonia. He was 92.

A movie leading man in his early career, Forsythe is best known on television for his nine year run as patriarch of the wealthy Carrington family on the primetime ABC soap opera “Dynasty,” which debuted in 1981.

It was not his only TV credit. An earlier generation would remember Forsythe as the “Bachelor Father” in the 1950s CBS sitcom. He was also the unseen voice of Charlie on ABC’s “Charlie’s Angels,” which aired 1976-1981.

A baseball fan who was raised in Brooklyn, NY, a very early career job for Forsythe, then known as Jacob Lincoln Freund, was as the PA announcer for the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Dynasty's Christopher Cazenove (aka Ben Carrington) dies

Well the Carrington family got even smaller millerbeach. Christopher Cazenove, who played Blake Carrington's younger vengeful brother Ben has died of blood poisoning at the age of 64. The addition of Ben was a pretty good storyline, but he came in when Dynasty was starting to head down. I can't remember if it was before or after that horrible Moldavia storyline. I think it was after.

Dixie Carter, best known for playing Julia on Designing Women, died today.

Sad to hear about Dixie Carter. On Friday I was at HMV and had the season one DVD of Designing Women in my hands. I was debating whether to buy it or not, but got the Blu-ray of the Lord of the Rings trilogy instead. Must go back and get that.

Here's Dixie as Julia Sugarbaker doing one of her famous rants: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVl4bmGcn3c

A panel with the Designing Women, where the ladies talk about Dixie's/Julia's big speeches/rants and the show's popularity with the gays: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ldVIIOIM0E4

Edit to add: another great Julia speech, this one in defense of her sister, Suzanne: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wV86kehwkc0 Love her!

Sad to hear about Dixie. I do recall an interview she did, I believe it was with Barbara Walters, where she said she is acutally a conservative, not at all like her liberal character. All the same, I enjoyed her acting, and she left far too soon at age 70.

Dorothy Height, often called the "godmother of the civil rights movement" died in Washington DC at age 98. She was one of my sheroes and she devoted her entire life to equality. I met her once at the University of Maryland and along with Coretta Scott King, she was one of the unfortunately few prominent Black leaders who said that civil rights are civil rights whether you are a person of color or gay or disabled. Lynn Redgrave dead at 67
Munson Man
Oh My God. Poor Vanessa Redgrave. First her daughter Natasha, then her brother Corin, and now her sister Lynn. All in just over a year. Where does does she find the strength to get through?
George Twins fan
Yeah MunsonMan...I can't imagine how tough all that loss is in such a short span of time. Lynn was a terrific actress and a great talk show guest. RIP!
canmark
I think my first introduction to Lynn Redgrave was those Weight Watchers commercials. Of course, she was a wonderful serious actor, and her family was an acting dynasty, but she didn't take herself too seriously and could be fun and bubbly, even through her years of cancer.

Speaking of Vanessa Redgrave, she's in an upcoming (sappy-looking) movie called Letters To Juliet.

Growing up in Central New York my radio was able to pick up signals of any Major League team from the Northeast and Midwest. Though the Tigers were never a favorite team of mine I still wound up tuning into WJR quite a bit back in the day to listen to Ernie's calm delivery. Another childhood memory passes on.

Actress, Singer Lena Horne dies at 92

Before the gorgeous Dorothy Dandridge, before the gorgeous Diahann Carroll, before the gorgeous Halle Berry, there was Lena Horne. I had the pleasure of meeting her a few times and you wanna talk about star struck?? I've met entertainers in the past, but I was never star struck the way I was when I met Ms. Horne the first time. She was so gorgeous and timeless and my heart is really heavy that we have lost one of the true trailblazing entertainers who paved the way for many black actresses. R.I.P. Ms. Horne. sad.gif

This is a sad one, but not unexpected. Art Linkletter has passed, at the ripe age of 97.

I had the pleasure of meeting him when he was on a book tour, back in the late 1980's, promoting "Old Age Is Not For Sissies". He was a very kind and fun person. I've met a lot of celebrities during my career, but Art was definately a stand-out. I remember my mother being especially impressed with my meeting him. RIP Art, you entertained millions with timeless comedy.

Actress Brittany Murphy is dead at 32. She was in films such as Clueless, 8 Mile, Sin City, Girl, Interrupted and Just Married. She also voiced the adorable, dim-witted character Luanne on King of the Hill (loved her!).

I saw her in person once, when she was promoting the film Love and Other Disasters at the Toronto Film Festival a few years ago. She seemed quite lovely, and during the Q&A following the screening was eager to prop up her co-star Matthew Rhys... an unknown at the time who was about to appear in a new TV show... Brothers and Sisters. (Matthew played the gay best friend of Brittany's character in Love and Other Disasters).

Brittany Murphy's husband passed away last week apparently of natural causes. I was a bit skeptical at first and thought it was just a rumor, but, according to a linked report that I found on IMDB, he was buried this past Thursday.

He sold a lot of records in the early 1950s but apparently his career suffered after he left Debbie for Liz. Speaking of which, while it's a sad occasion, since he's a native Philadelphian I feel I must chime in with this famous joke...

Why did Eddie Fisher divorce Debbie Reynolds and marry Elizabeth Taylor?

The answer is below but I've whited it out. You'll have to highlight the line to see it. I'm sneaky that way. tongue.gif

Because he wanted his wife Taylor-made, not Reynolds-wrapped.

This story has really broken my heart. I'm not one to get too mushy about things but my eyes watered when I read about this. For this young man who had so much life left to live to feel as though he had no other option but to take his own life says a lot about our society. This is just so tragic beyond words. I'm glad the Rutgers community has responded with outrage and I hope the two responsible for this "prank" are charged to the fullest extent of what is legally possible.

Rutgers Student Believed To Have Committed Suicide After Being Secretly Taped In Gay Sex Encounter

Tyler Clementi's Suicide Sparks Outrage At Rutgers
canmark
I've read stuff on the Internet about how that case is all about "gay bullying" and how Tyler was victimized because he was gay, and how the perpetrators are evil. That may or may not be true, but I wonder if it all wasn't just a college "prank" (as you say) and that, in this era of celebrity sex tapes and punk'd and Jackass and funny videos on the Internet, that this tragic episode was "fun" gone awry. It's certainly a terrible invasion of privacy, but I don't know that the perpetrators were intentionally trying to torment this guy because he was gay. They thought--as many do--that humiliating someone would be a funny thing to do. Regardless of their intentions, this guy took his own life--which is terribly sad.
mets57
secretly videotaping someone having sex and streaming it live on the internet is more than a prank. this was a gross invasion of privacy. i feel so bad for tyler. he obviously wasn't ready to "come out" and to be forced like that was just too much for him. RIP, tyler.

yes, there's a bit of homophobia involved here. here's what the perpetrator wrote on his twitter:

"Roommate asked for the room till midnight," Ravi wrote on Twitter that night. "I went into Molly's room and turned on my webcam. I saw him making out with a dude. Yay."
millerbeach
So Ravi knew what was going to happen. I heard he is going to be charged as a result of Tyler's death. Good. I hope the inmates get ahold of him and administer some true justice. Pucker up, Ravi. Momma won't be there to save you this time.

Again, there may or may not have been homophobic intent, but I don't see it in that tweet. Replace "dude" with "chick" or "babe" or "woman" or "cheerleader" or "lady" or whatever word you like and it has the same meaning. There are people going into women's washrooms and taking photos, there are "bait bus"-type porn videos where people are (supposedly) secretly filmed having sex. I'm not excusing the perpetrators (and wasn't one of the co-accused a woman?), I'm just saying that things like this exist, and for all we know the roommates might have been good friends and this was just teasing gone haywire. For all Ravi knew, this guy could have gone after him with a gun in retribution. Things like that have happened, too, such as the guy on (what was it?) Sally Jesse Raphael who killed the man who said he had a crush on him?
mets57
well according to this, they aren't good friends (poster on that message board is believed to be tyler clementi). they're college freshmen (barely) and random roomates. taping him, streaming it online, posting it on twitter and encouraging everyone to watch had malicious intent all over it. he obviously wanted to publically humiliate tyler.

also, dismissing it as a prank gone haywire is unacceptable. everyone deserves privacy especially during intimate moments. the fact that he was gay and outed because of it made it worse.

This is more than "just teasing gone haywire." This would not have been done had this young man been with a woman. Dharun Ravi and Molly Wei deliberately targeted Tyler Clementi due to his sexual orientation. Their intent was malicious. I don't know how these brats can live with themselves.
canmark
There's a commentary on the Huffington Post about the Facebook movie, The Social Network. While it mostly talks about how the movie is a fiction (duh) and how Hollywood doesn't "get" social networking, it also mentions the Tyler Clementi case. In the movie, Zuckerberg makes some negative comments about his ex-girlfriend (who had just dumped him) on his blog. Later he wants to apologize to her, but she will have none of it. He posted these insulting comments on the Internet for all to see, and she's not forgiving him. At the time he didn't realize what he was doing was wrong--only later, when it was too late.
QUOTE
As I walked out of the theater at 2:30 a.m Friday, I was reminded by one moment in the movie. It's a made-up scene between Zuckerberg and his ex-girlfriend Erica, who becomes a victim of Zuckerberg's drive-by-blogging -- he calls her a "bitch" and posts her bra size for the online world to see. The confrontation between the two would have been much more effective without Zuckerberg being told that he writes from "a dark room" because he's a "failure at human contact." The heavy-handedness aside, the ugly consequences of violating someone's privacy easily speaks for itself.

The scene reminded me of the truly tragic story of Tyler Clementi, the 18-year-old freshman at Rutgers University who took his own life after his roommate, 18-year-old Dharum Ravi, recorded his private sexual encounter with another man and shared it online, via Twitter and iChat. Before he jumped off the George Washington Bridge into the Hudson River, he signed onto his Facebook account and wrote "sorry." A Facebook group memorializing his death, created after the news broke on Wednesday, has some 75,000 members.
