Full Version: Should a 50 yard FG or longer result in 4 points instead of 3 points?

Before the 3 point rule in college basketball, all shots were two points. To me, this is no different than college football's 3 points for all FG's regardless of length. A 15 yard FG is awarded the same amount of points as a 55 yard FG. I fail to see the logic in this. If a kicker is capable of scoring from 50 yards out, why not reward 50 plus yard FG's 4 points. It would add another dimension to the game and provide outstanding finishes with coaches having to make gut wrenching calls what's the correct play. Also, it would allow the kicker to become a more integral part of the gameplan during the entire game instead of the "salvage" the drive with 3 points.

There will come a day in the near future that there will be a kicker that is near perfect at 80 yards. I think at that point some changes with the field goal scoring will happen.

Right now it would be unusual to award an extra point for a 50+ because no coach in their right mind would ever go for it. It would be seen as a gift for a good last minute kick and that's about it. How many scenarios outside the final play of the half/game do you see it being a good play call?

Honestly I'm more for removing the kicker from scoring all together. The concept is silly if you really look at it. He's not really part of the team. He gets 1 point after his team scores by kicking a kick he could do blindfolded. Or the team gets him X yards away and he makes it or misses it. Why not give the team points equal to the distance they got down the field before they were stopped and be done with it?

Why should this player who is not part of the team's drive determine the point outcome of the team's effort down the field? It doesn't really make sense.

In most fantasy football formats, your kicker is awarded a bonus for kicking a field goal greater than 50 yards. If the fantasy hierarchy can see the difficulty in a 50+ yard field goal, why shouldn't the NFL or the NCAA.

3pt hoops shot and 4 pt fg are apples n oranges.

The three point shot was created not only to reward shooting from longer distances but also to open up the inside and to reduce the dominance of the big men in the game.

A four point field goal in football would be nothing more than a gimmick.

I don't see any redeeming qualities to this proposal. Kickers should be less, not more, integral to the game.

Should a TD run or pass of 70 yards be worth more than a TD of 7 yards? No. Neither should a field goal.
