Aye dios mio. Que horible. I hear about these "turistas" horror stories and thank god nothing like this has ever happened to me, although I'm sure it happens more than we hear about. I just wouldn't let something like that keep me from going to a place. I've often relied on my common sense and gut feelings about people to get me through. Anybody who goes to a place by themselves should set certain rules for themselves. Whenever I go somewhere alone, I never let it be known that I am there by myself. I either say that I have relatives or friends in the area, or that I am there on business so that they have the idea that if my ass goes missing someone will be immediately looking. Familiarize yourself with an area. Don't look like a tourist (i.e. takin damn pictures of everything in sight and wearing I love (insert city/country shirts

). I am not a picture person at all so thats something I've never had to worry about. Many of those thugs spot tourists in a second and often can decipher really quickly if they can take advantage of them. Now with all that said, it doesn't mean that I won't still be a victim of some kind of crime, however I think its best to be preventive and not make myself more of a target and be like oh yeah I'm here for two weeks all by myself.
In addition, the basic rules one would follow here in the US when it comes to going out. Never accept a drink from someone you don't know, and if you put your drink down and turn from it, you're done with it. Hell, nowadays you even have to be weary of bartenders because some of them are slipping things into drinks while they are making them. So you need to watch their asses too. Now in terms of going back to your hotel or villa or back to some random guys house while you are there, of course that is always a risk. Again, use your gut and be wise to leave a message with someone that you are going to some guy's place. These sound like things that would have people thinking wow thats a lot of effort and would kind of ruin the experience sounding all paranoid. It really isn't. Its just a few simple things that everyone should follow. Its become so second nature to me that its not even that big a deal. Its not like I'm looking over my shoulder at every turn for someone to get me. I just always make myself aware of my surroundings and do things to not put myself in positions that will make me a target. I have traveled all over the world and have never been a victim of any kind of foolishness. I think being 6'3 215lbs helps but more of it I think has to do with common sense. Of course, the thing about common sense is that its not so common. So....GOOD LUCK!!
