But all they have to do is get some run production from him for the last 2 months. The NL West is weak. That might be enough for the Dodgers to take it.

I assume they won't pick up that $20 million option, so if Torre can't abide Manny being Manny, he'll just sit and hold his tongue for 2 months.
mets57
well, fortunately he didn't go to the marlins or phils.

he should help the dodgers, especially in a very weak NL west.
Joe in Philly
Of course, there can still be deals -- it's just that players have to go through waivers in order to be moved. Teams can put in a claim to block a trade that they think their opposition is working on -- but if they do they could get stuck with a player (and more importantly, a contract) they don't really want.

Think Manny will run out any ground balls in Dodger land? Perhaps he will request his own personal bathroom near the outfield wall for those moments when he needs to relax. rolleyes.gif

anyone see the fat slob prince fielder tackle the handsome manny parra?

what a douche.

The Brewers had a dugout fight last year on their way to not making the playoffs. If they don't make it this year, though, with Sabathia and Sheets both free agents...
Bill W
The Yankees have finally figured out that the worst-hitting centerfielder in the AL is not helping them win games, so they've sent Melky Cabrera to the minors (at least two months too late).
Joe in Philly
I love this poll question! From yesterday's NY Daily News:

What does Carl Pavano pitching for the Yankees on Saturday signify?
Total votes: 4,698

The apocalypse - 8 percent
The sad state of affairs in the Bronx - 18 percent
Desperation, pure and simple - 20 percent
All of the above - 54 percent

Instant replay begins tonight. Yay or nay?

Nay!

I'm calling this now.....

'07's AL Rookie of the Year will be '08's AL MVP - and winner of the batting title.

And the '08 ROTY will be Jacoby Ellsbury.
Texas Daytripper
Two games between the Houston Astros and the Chicago Cubs have been postponed due to Hurricane Ike making landfall in the Houston Area. Sunday's games is still up in the air.

The Astros have been playing great lately, now within 3 games of the wild card. I hope they can sustain that momentum, once their season resumes.

He'd be a horrible choice. Longoria, Aviles, Alexei Ramirez and about 6 other rooks have all hit better. (a .362 slugging pct is putrid.)

As for instant replay, pls hasten the day when umpires are replaced by machines. More more more.
Joe in Philly
Is Ellsbury hurting or not starting for some reason? I noticed the other day he was put into a game as a pinch-runner. It seemed odd because there was so much hype about him I assumed he was starting.

Except for the AL Central, in every playoff race the leader is ahead by 3 or more games in the loss column. Could this mean much less drama in the final week?

And where the hell did Houston come from?!?
Joe in Philly
SIX rainouts tonight -- only one due to Ike. All six games have playoff implications.

The Yankees and Mets will both play doubleheaders at home tomorrow (weather permitting). This has only happened twice before, in 1982 and 1997.
Joe in Philly
The Astros say that Minute Maid Park survived Ike's wrath pretty well and they still want to play there. But with all the power outages and other damage in the area it seems to me they should either play at a neutral site or not play at all.
Bill W
The Giants let Tim Lincecum, the NL's best pitcher and the future of their team at age 24, throw 138 pitches in his complete-game shutout Saturday night.

100% macho-bullsh*t idiocy.

The Brewers fired manager Ned Yost today. Granted they are in a slump but they are in the thick of pennant race. Maybe ownership thinks this will give the team a kcik in the ass. Third base coach Dale Sveum was named the interim manager.

Bill W
It took them this long to discover that Yost is clueless?

I saw the end of that. I was shocked. If he's going for a no-hitter, sure. If it were a closer game, maybe, depending on the Giants' bullpen, but when it was 7-0? What was the point?
phillyrunner
Not that this is the right thing to do, but the only reason it seems Bochy let him finish the game was so he could get his first career complete game shutout. Here is some of what was said about the pitchcount:

QUOTE
The scrutiny upon Lincecum will increase. He has amassed his three highest pitch counts of the season in his last four starts, including 127 pitches last Monday against Arizona and 132 pitches Aug. 27 against Colorado. Unlike his last start, when he entered the ninth inning with a shutout after a scheduled off-day gave him extra rest, Lincecum will receive his usual four-day break before facing Arizona next Thursday.

Lincecum dismissed the fuss over the care and feeding of his arm, noting that he threw close to 160 pitches in a game while competing for the University of Washington. But Bochy vowed that he and his staff will watch Lincecum carefully in the coming days -- not only to determine how long the ace will pitch in his final two scheduled starts, but also to gauge whether it's worth using the Sept. 22 off-day to give him an extra start in the season finale against Los Angeles.

He was touted early on as sort of a replacement for Crisp, but then Coco started picking up his game and doing better so they basically "take turns" in starting.

If he can't even displace Coco Crisp he's not really worthy of the ROTY Award.

btw, the very fact that it will be a Yankeeless October makes this the best baseball season since '93. Next Sunday is the last day we'll have to hear sanctimony about "the shrine" that's going to be razed in the name of taxpayer-fleecing and filthy lucre:

I mentioned it on the blog.

It does seem there should've been a better alternative than Milwaukee. I think they knew they'd sell tickets for the game being so close to Chicago.

Albert Pujols leads the NL, significantly, in on-base pct and slugging. As even Rick Sutcliffe said on ESPN last night -- and he's no genius -- the only reason to deny him the NL MVP is if you're "bored" with his historic production, year after year.

If you think the MVP should be on "a winner," maybe the award should be called MVP With the Best Teammates.

Damn, if only there was no Ike to hit Houston. Those two lost Astro home games might have made a HUGE difference in the NL Central race. cool.gif

And Carlos didn't get the no-hitter, it was Jesus Christ who did it all - just ask Carlos.

ah - I long for the good old days when pro athletes - the most superstitious people on the planet it would seem - attributed their success to 7-days-without-cleaning socks instead of to "my God" (when did God become the property of Serena Williams, by the way?).

Come on you guys...it's a well known fact that Jesus has a killer fastball (it registered at 106 MPH) and he was the first to use the knuckleball. Judas couldn't hit him...why do you think he so easily turned on Jesus? Read your bibles, people!

I think a player has to at least be on a contender, unless his stats are so overwhelming that he can't be denied even if his team is lousy. Pujols certainly fits the bill.

I find it a little difficult to believe that some people are talking up Ryan Howard. With a batting average still under .250 and subpar defense (that has improved lately, though), even with his power numbers and yet another strong September, I just don't see it.

minny sweeps white sox to lead the AL central by 0.5 game.

good to see former met carlos gomez doing very well. GO TWINS!
George Twins fan
If someone had told me that the Twins would go into the final weekend in first place after losing Johan Santana, Torii Hunter and Matt Garza plus have Michael Cuddyer miss most of the season with an injury I would have probably have them committed. Still some work to do but to sweep the Sox without Liriano pitching and to come back from 6-1 deficit last night was amazing. I don't see them doing much of anything in the postseason if they get there but you never know.
Bill W
Just think how many games the Twins would be in front if they hadn't traded Johan for inadequate prospects... like Carlos Gomez, still a terrible player at this point who needs to learn to get on base.

Actually, the fact that the Mess collapsed and will miss postseason play makes this the best baseball season since, er....LAST baseball season, when the Mess collapsed and missed postseason play. Today is the last day w'll have to hear complaints about "the toilet" that's going to be razed in the name of taxpayer-fleecing and filthy lucre.

The Yankees had a beautiful ceremony before their last game with a full house of their fans cheering them happily; the Mess are having a sad ceremony AFTER their last game with a few embittered fans and quite a few empty seats.

I actually feel bad for Mets fans, except for one particular venom-spewing drunk.
George Twins fan
So the White Sox and twins both (finally) win and now the Sox have to play a makeup game against the Tigers tomorrow. Not sure when this game was rained out but they couldn't find another day during the season to make this up? Anyway, if the Sox win that, there will be a one game palyoff with the Twins on Tuesday in Chicago unfortunately.
Joe in Philly
It was 2 weekends ago when they were rained out both Friday and Saturday and barely managed to get 2 games in on Sunday. Each team had only one day off but they were different days(Tigers - 9/18, White Sox - 9/22) so tomorrow is the only day they could play. If the White Sox win tomorrow, they'll have 3 games in 3 days against 3 different teams. I wonder if that's ever happened before?

If I remember correctly, the Rays last year finished a series with one team... went to Chicago to makeup a game... and then started another series the next day. I'd be this is somewhat relatively common.

Edit: Yes, August 26-28 vs Oakland, at Chicago AL, at Baltimore.

With 270 career wins, Mike Mussina has his first 20 win season... at 39(!). He won 19 games in 1995 and 1996, but despite a sparkling career (270-153, 3.68 ERA) for the Orioles and Yankees, he had never won 20 games until this season.
Joe in Philly
The White Sox forced a one-game showdown with the Twins to get into the playoffs. The winner gets Tampa Bay in the first round.

Given the TBS hamster-powered generator giving out for the first inning-plus of ALCS Game 6, I propose that MLB award next year's LCS to the Home Shopping Network. What a joke.
