Since he was probably best known for his Olympics work I figured I'd post this here. He was also the voice of ABC's Wide World of Sports. He was 86 years old.

Jim McKay will always be the voice of the Olympics for me, especially the 1972 heartbreaking ones in Munich. I still remember that horrible day as if it was yesterday. You knew this special man cared about what he was covering, and I cried right along with him when he had to announce that all the Israeli athletes were dead. His professionalism is unmatched.

How sad. I so remember Jim McKay from ABC's Wide World of Sports. The famous theme song, the montage and McKay's famous voiceover:

Spanning the globe
To bring you the constant variety of sports
The thrill of victory... and the agony of defeat
The human drama of athletic competition
This is ABC's Wide World of Sports

He was the signature sports voice of my childhood. The consistent voice to my weekend counts of paper route money. I did not grow up in a big market, so no Vin Scully, Jack Buck, or Harry Carey for me. It was Jim McKay, Keith Jackson, Chris Schenkel, etc that were the regular voices in my house. Rest in peace Mr. McKay, and thank you.

He was truly a legend. And he's one of our own, since he was born in Philadelphia.
