FSU, I had the exact same reaction to the show. I normally don't go for the prettyboy model type, but something about Justin just made me go WOWZA. Once he got canned, I couldn't bring myself to watch any longer (more on that in a bit). Justin must make pretty decent money modeling. Hopefully he'll invest in some voice coaching to further his career. He certainly has more of a chance at stardom than any of the other contestants.
Five seasons of Nashville Star have yet to produce one bona fide star. Buddy Jewell's first album was great, but his second went nowhere. Neither Erika Jo nor Brad Cotter had a hit, or even semi-hit, single. Chris Young's terrific "Drinking Me Lonely" peaked at #42. Angela Hacker's album didn't do well either. Miranda Lambert had a hit with "Kerosene," but I think she's more known for being Blake Shelton's girlfriend than anything else. Even though the show probably has more marketing and access to a bigger audience because of the switch to NBC, I'll be shocked if a star comes out of this season. I've loved a lot of past NS contestants, too many to list. But this year, yikes, none of the contestants have anything special going for them (except my sugar-pie honeybunch Justin, of course

).
But my biggest issue with the show wasn't the so-so talent but the way it totally sold out. For the first few weeks, I kept hearing one schmaltzy pop song after another. And it's not even like they took songs from other genres and countrified them, like Faith Hill's "Piece of My Heart." When I heard "I Think We're Alone Now" performed with an arrangement indistinguishable from Tiffany's, I almost puked into my own cupped hands. Even as a lifelong country die-hard, I don't have too much of a problem with the broadening of the country genre. Brownell & Richey from CMT's "Can You Duet" were more bluesy rock than country, but at least they were a little bit country. Too many of the songs performed on this year's "Nashville
Sellout Star" weren't even a little bit. Between the wooden and talentless Billy Ray Cyrus as a host, the a**hole John Rich as a judge, and the total sellout of the show to pop music, "Nashville Star" is a complete disaster this season. I feel bad that Jewel (the awesomest host EVER last season) is stuck in this mess.
