I'm happy for Kathy Griffin. Not only was she nominated again for Best Reality Show for "My Life on the D List," but she also is nominated in the Best Variety, Musical or Comedy Special category for her last stand-up special, "Kathy Griffin: Straight to Hell." Good for her.

And who in the hell would ever nominate "Two and a Half Men" for Best Comedy? That's one of the worst shows on TV. Ridiculous.

Ugh! What the hell does David E Kelly have over the academy that warrants Boston Legal scoring all these nominations? Best Drama, Spader, Shatner and Bergen but Lost only scores ONE acting nomination? Spader over Matthew Fox and Kyle Chandler of Friday Night Lights? Come on! Boston Legal is okay for what it is but it is not one of the six best dramas on television.

And I couldn't agree more with FSU about Two and a Half Men. And How did Phil Keoghan from The Amazing Race lose out to Ryan Seacrest and Howie Mandel? Too dumb!

My friend who votes for these will, as he has for the past several years, ask for my "guidance" wink.gif when he's doing his ballot. I'll let you know who and what I, er I mean he, votes for.

Lost, Friday Night Lights and Mad Men were all overlooked in the acting categories. I was happy that Jon Hamm, John Slattery and Robert Morse (guest actor) were nominated, but Elizabeth Moss, January Jones, etc. come on! (Ok, I'm a fan of the show) In addition to Matthew Fox, how about some love for Yunjin Kim or Elizabeth Mitchell. Now I'll admit that I haven't watched Friday Night Lights, but from what my coworkers have told me, it's worthy of some recognition.

I keep wondering why the Emmys have some a soft spot for BIG NAME actors and actresses who do television. You can just look at the Drama Actress nominations for that. Now I give Sally Field a pass because she is the heart and soul of Brothers & Sisters, but Holly Hunter was just a mess in Saving Grace. I tried to watch an episode and it was just a train wreck.

I'm guessing the vote was split between Phil and Phil's eyebrow and that's how Howie slipped in. I was kinda hoping that Padma Lakshmi would have been nominated, but alas no. I thought Pushing Daisies might have slipped into the Comedy Category over Men. Daisies may not be for everyone but it's certainly different and well done.

I was glad to see Amy Pohler nominated for Saturday Night Live simply for her Christian Siriano impersonation. Perhaps you could encourage your friend to vote for her. wink.gif

Thrilled that Damages is up for emmys for series, lead actress, and a couple support actor nods. It is truly a wonderful show and I'm hoping the emmy attention will increase the ratings. FX picked it up for 2 more seasons, but season 2 won't premiere until 2009 I believe. But it is a fantastic show and Glenn Close is one of my top 3 favorite actresses, and an actress I feel who does not get her due. She's amazing!!

Yeah she'll definitely get our vote in that category. I like Jean Smart and Vanessa Williams in their roles but Amy Poehler just rocks!

The Best Drama category is a tough one...Lost, Damages and Mad Men are all truly worthy. Really have to ponder that one.
swiminbuff
I love both Damages and Mad Men. Happy to see those shows recognized.
Mariner Duck Guy
Battlestar Galactica should have been nominated for best drama. Padma, Phil and Cat Deely should have been nominated. Cat especially since she is galaxies better than Seacrest.

And .So You Think You Can Dance should have been nominated over Idol or that other dancing show.

Boston Legal was severely underwhelming last season and should not have received all those nominations. I guess being a "name" counts for something.

Go Amy Poehler! Fierce.
Rick62
I cannot believe that Elizabeth Mitchell is overlooked again for her excellent work on Lost. I am glad that Michael Emerson did get nominated though.

Agreed. Elizbeth Mitchell is amazing in her role on LOST. Definitely an oversight.

Elizabeth Mitchell's slight is even more egregious when Candice Bergen is nominated for her next-to-nothing role on the silly Boston Legal.

I'm with mdterp: Glenn Close is the bomb. Damages was the most exciting thing on TV and she ate it up. It was incredibly dramatic, suspenseful, confusing in a challenging sometimes weird way, and full of strong supporting performances...In fact, I think Ted Danson may deserve a win, too, as he was utterly despicable yet human, and certainly unlike anything he'd done before. Glenn Close was riveting, dazzling, powerful and yet completely accessible.

I'm a huge fan of Saving Grace - it surprises the h*ll out of me. Holly Hunter inhabits this full blown character like a raging fire. In fact, the second season opener last week was as amazing an hour of TV as I've seen since...the premiere of Damages last year...smile.gif..the cast is really great too, and there are two of the hottest guys on TV on this show.

I can't imagine Glenn Close not winning...even with the universal love and appreciation of Sally Field's force of nature matriarch on Brothers and Sisters...and I hope Brenda, er, I mean Rachel Griffiths wins supporting...she's just great.

Okay so here is who/what my friend voted for with a whole lot of influence from me:

Comedy Series
It was between The Office and 30 Rock but we went with 30 Rock.

Drama Series
This was the toughest category...Damages, Dexter, Lost and Mad Men are all worthy with Mad Men winning out in the end after much debate.

Variety, Music or Comedy Series
The Daily Show

Actor Comedy Series
The easiest category...Steve Carell is terrific but Alec Baldwin just owns his role and better own an Emmy.

Actress Comedy Series
We really like all the women in this category but it came down to Fey or Applegate. If you haven't seen her show, she is really quite good. But we went with Tina Fey.

Supporting Actress Comedy Series
We love Jean Smart and Vanessa Williams but Amy Poehler plays multiple roles week after week so we went with her.

Supporting Actor Comedy Series
Neither one of us really like any of these characters but my friend worked with Neil Patrick Harris so he got the vote.

Actor Drama Series
It came down to Jon Hamm and Michael C. Hall. We're both pissed that Kyle Chandler of Firday Night Lights and Matthew Fox of Lost didn't get nominated! We went with Hamm.

Actress Drama Series
This was a no-brainer-Glenn Close!

Supporting Actress Drama Series
I had no input in this category as I don't watch these shows much. My friend swears by Rachel Griffiths so he voted for her.

Supporting Actor Drama Series
So tough between Emerson, Danson and Slattery. But Michael Emerson is so eerily awesome on Lost that I talked my friend into him.

I'd be surprised if Christina Applegate does not win after the news this weekend that she has breast cancer. Hollywood loves acknowledging sick actors. ohmy.gif

i caught breaking bad last night on tv (rerun), and it's ashame that Bryan Cranston didn't get nominated. Also, he's probably one of the few actors who did quite many scenes in TV (and I think one in movie) in either briefs or bikini swimsuit.

Bryan Cranston DID get nominated.

Some of the Emmy Awards were given out last night at the Creative Arts Emmy ceremony. From TV Guide online:

QUOTE
A pair of funny ladies stole the show Saturday at the Creative Arts Emmys Saturday night.

Kathy Griffin took home her second Emmy, earning the best reality program trophy for Bravo's My Life on the D-List. According to People, Griffin didn’t tell Jesus or anyone else to "suck it" in her acceptance speech (as she infamously did in 2007), but it was still bleepable: "Here we go again, f----rs."

The other bleep-worthy moment of the night was Sarah Silverman's two wins for her viral video smash, "I'm F---ing Matt Damon," a clip that aired on Jimmy Kimmel Live and suggested Silverman was cheating on then-boyfriend Kimmel with the Bourne Identity star. The video took home the award for best original music and lyrics and a picture-editing award.

Though Silverman and Kimmel split after five years together in July, Silverman thanked him in her speech. "Let's be honest, Matt Damon had very little to do with this being popular," she said. "Thanks to the person for whom this whole video was made: Jimmy Kimmel, who broke my heart – ohh, who'll always have a place in my heart."

Other notable winners at the event were Cynthia Nixon for her guest role as a psychopath on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Kathryn Joosten for playing Desperate Housewives' Mrs. McCluskey (she also won the award in 2005), and Tim Conway for his guest work on 30 Rock.

HBO's John Adams claimed the most awards of the night with eight wins, including best costumes for a miniseries, movie or special. Mad Men took home four statues, including best cinematography, and The Simpsons earned its 10th Emmy for best animated half-hour series.

The Creative Arts Emmys will air Saturday, Sept. 20 at 8 pm/ET on E! as the lead-up to the live prime-time gala, which airs the following night on ABC.

Was it just me or was the writing (or lack thereof) for this year's show out of a bad dream? Ryan Seacrest and Hedi Klum on stage at the same time with Howie Mandel and the dude from Survivor....and later, Josh Groban singing the Muppet Show and Jeffersons theme songs. Some producer had to get fired.

I say this as a proud awards show queen - and I mean I will watch the Grammy's for crying out loud - that was probably the worst show ever done. The "hosts" were a joke, certainly a better one than ANY of the actual jokes "written" for the show (please tell me Bruce Vlanch was not responsible - we'll have to strip him of his gay card). I mean, you expect wooden performances and lame jokes, but the show was paced hideously badly (i.e., the Josh Groban piece - it could have been funny and entertaining if had been about 1/2 as long) and the attempts to honor television history were totally random. It was totally tacky to have presenter after presenter note their "bit" had been cut because of time (but they left in Craig Ferguson groping Brooke Shields - sexual harassment, always a guaranteed joke-getter), but then to have the completely, ridiculously and painfully bad Jimmy Kimmell-as-reality-show-host to present the reality-show-host award bit go on and on - WTF!?

The only good things about last night were the win by Mad Men and looking forward to what should be a scathing review by Tom Shales in this mornings Washington Post.

It wasn't just you Jay...the writing for the Emmys was just terrible. And some of the winners were suspect at best. The Josh Groban bit was lame, the Laugh In bit was Guantanamo-level torture and the idea of having the five reality host nominees host the Emmys proved that nobody in that category deserves an award. Howie Mandel is just beyond annoying. Ryan Seacrest and Tom Bergeron are schmaltzy cornballs. and Heidi Kulm and Jeff Probst are eye candy.

Really happy that 30 Rock, Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin, Mad Men and Glenn Close won their awards. I thought Jon Hamm was a lock but I like Bryan Cranston and thought he was robbed never winning for Malcolm in the Middle and it's always fun to have a surprising winner.

Maddog
You know they give away too many Emmys when Pirate Masters and Frank TV each take home a statue. blink.gif
Bryan
Howie Mandel should be barred from TV period. What a joke. He's a self indulgent twit.

Heidi should stick to bitchy fashion. She was awful. It's amazing how much these women need to be seen as hot. Her posing and jumping around was terrible. And Brooke Shields still wants to be seen as a sex symbol though that's a stretch..she looks great, just a little desperate.

The worst host idea ever though Jeff Probst at least seems nice, classy, and professional.

Glenn Close rules!

Josh Groban was amazing though who really cares about this random list of songs.

I loved Laura Linney's comment about respecting community organizers.

Tommy Smothers brought back some radical 60's and it was welcome.

The prunes were hysterical. MTM's arms not so fun.

Jeremy Piven's line about the 12 minutes of talking as the opening hit it right on the head.

Loved seeing Doogie with his boyfriend on the red carpet E show...

Don Rickles was funny though Kathy was a bit too solicitous...she gave it over to him.

And I was really happy that Damages won supporting actor too...for Zeljko Ivanek...

jeffrey3410
i love john hamm but i really think bryan cranston deserved it even though it may be a real surprise win.
Bayou City Sar
Pretty cool that Jeremy Piven won the best supporting actor as Ari Gold.

Entourage is one of my favorite shows and Ari Gold is by far my favorite character
