Did anyone watch this show on Logo last night? I've never seen the movie, but want to now. I thought the TV show was hilarious. Beverly Leslie is one of the funniest guys around, but the three sisters were a riot.

I totally forgot about the series! I need to look for it in repeats.

Hey MDG, I don't think LOGO repeats their shows. tongue.gif

I caught part of the second episode this past week and what I saw was still very funny. The brother who is in the mental home to be "de-homosekshulized" is still dressed up as (and having visions of the recently deceased) Tammy Wynette. He cut a deal his female doctor/warden that he could still sing like Tammy Wynette so long as he thinks of women when he masturb*tes and he said, "Oh, I'll give it a try, but the thought is kinda makin' me sick to ma stomach." Too funny. laugh.gif

I watched about half of the first episode and had enough. It's not for me.

I have yet to see it, save the preview commercials on tv. But it's good to see Olivia Newton-John is finally putting that CMA Female Vocalist award she got back in the 70s to good use. tongue.gif

How does she put the award to use, Matt? (I don't get this network).

Same here! I found it so bad as to be unwatchable.

I'm really enjoying the show. I love the campiness and Leslie Jordan/Brother Boy is a hoot. Oh kaaaaaaaaay.

In the ads for the show, ONJ (with a band) is shown singing a country song with quite a bit of twang, harking back to her early days in the music biz. In 1974, she was nominated for the Country Music Association's Entertainer of the Year, Female Vocalist, Album (for "If You Love Me Let Me Know"), and Single (for the title track to the album), winning Female Vocalist. Being new to the country genre (when told a song of hers was "being worked country," she didn't know what it meant), she had apparently expressed an interest in wanting to "meet Hank Williams," not knowing he'd been dead for 20 or so years by then. Oops. Fortunately, her pop career ended up doing ok. wink.gif

Anyway, I still have yet to catch when this show is on, so I keep missing it. Would like to see an episode, but am not sure at this point if I'll like it or not. Seems just screwball enough to catch my interest, but it might not keep my interest.

Thanks for the explanation, Matt.

I remember reading about what a controversy her and John Denver's winning country music awards stirred up back then. They were considered "too pop" and outsiders to Nashville by some. Charlie Rich lit the envelope on fire with a lighter as he read John Denver's name as Entertainer of the Year. (Apparently, he didn't consider that he had just had two major crossovers to pop himself with "Behind Closed Doors" and "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World," as well as several other songs that did well on the Top 40 and adult contemporary charts). People like George Jones and Tammy Wynette (who wasn't even nominated for Female Vocalist the year ONJ won) even started their own short-lived organization, which I believe was called The Academy of Country Entertainers. I also remember reading that fellow nominees Loretta Lynn and Dolly Parton displayed their typical class and sent ONJ flowers and a congratulatory note after she won.

Funny how ONJ and Denver's music from that era sounds far more country than a lot of today's country music!

Yup, have heard of ACE - and am embarrassed to know that my Barbara Mandrell was a member of that group as well (odd considering how HUGE she became with her non-traditional country sound). Have also seen the clips of Charlie Rich announcing John Denver as Entertainer of the Year, lighting the envelope on fire. Seemed like it was a pretty hypocritical time in country music back then, but obviously Nashville has lightened up greatly in the years since (even if there is the once-a-decade or so backlash to country sounding too pop).

Ok, this thread has probably been hi-jacked enough! tongue.gif
