The horrific murder of Tim McLean has shocked people from around the world. His funeral service is being held today in Winnipeg, thankfully without the outrageous indignity of Phelps' presence. Can't the US authorities do anything to stop this lunatic from carrying on his hatemongering? He has been getting away with it far too long.
Our Public Safety minister Stockwell Day has a long history of opposing gay rights but I know he would never agree with Phelps' extreme views on homosexuality. So he did the right thing by barring Phelps from Canada. Not that McLean's murder had anything to do with homosexuality in the first place...
Not long ago, I saw a bizarre TV interview with Shirley Roper Phelps and a gay activist whose name I've forgotten. Somehow, they consider each other 'friends'. I just shook my head in disbelief.
US authorities can't do anything about Phelps because the US constitution guarantees free speech. What should happen is that the US press should stop reporting on his shenanigans, but stories about him sell ink and air time. Again the press is covered by free speech.
Phelps and his family, who are the Westboro Baptist Church's congregation in its entirety, are congenital nut jobs, and everyone in North America knows it.
